Jean McEwan
Jean McEwan, 66, of Bellevue died in her home on Monday, June 14, 1999.
Mrs. McEwan was born on June 26, 1932 in Battle Creek, the daughter of James and Frances (Russman) Thomas. She graduated from St. Philip High School in 1950 and also from the Kellogg Community College School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse at Leila Hospital for 18 years, retiring in 1984. She attended St. Philip Catholic Church and enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Schook of Marshall and Julie McEwan of Charlotte; two sons, Patrick McEwan of Charlotte and Timothy McEwan of Bellevue; two grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Gadola of Flint, Joan Bauman of Battle Creek and Jill Rhodes of Plainwell; and two brothers, James Thomas of Kalamazoo and Jack Thomas of Chamblee, Ga.
Rosary was prayed June 16 at the Richard Henry Funeral Home, Battle Creek and the Funeral Mass was June 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, Battle Creek.
Memorial contributions may be made to multiple sclerosis. She was a charter member of the West Windsor United Brethren Church.
Barry Madry
Barry Madry, 53, of Bellevue died May 21, 1999 at Battle Creek Health System, Fieldstone Center.
Mr. Madry was born July 14, 1945 in Fort Worth, Texas the son of Charles and Gladys (Chubb) Madry. He was a Bellevue High School graduate. He married Barbara (Bradway) Oct. 1, 1965 in Bellevue. He was a blacksmith and shod horses in the Bellevue area for over 30 years. He was an avid horseman and a member of the Michigan Ropers’ Association, a partner in the 4-H Double R Rodeo contractors for several years and the Michigan Wagon Master during the 1976 Bicentennial Wagon Train. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Bellevue; three sons, Garett, Thad, and Wade of Bellevue; four sisters, Bonnie Parr, Sondra Petty, and Carlotta Payne of Bellevue, and Rebecca Moore of Vermontville; and one brother, Brett of Bellevue.
Services were May 25 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue with the Rev. Stephen Covert officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Edward J. Manger
Edward “Eddie” Manger passed away December 27, 1999 at the age of 87. He was born May 14, 1912 in Gulfport, Mississippi, one of eight children born to Joseph and Bertha (Cantron) Manger. Eddie spent the early years of his life near his beloved Gulf Coast, working in the hotel industry from Florida to Mississippi and Texas. He served in Europe during World War II with the 584 Bomb Squadron and the 394th Bomb Group (Bridgebusters). Eddie and Dorathea were married on February 11, 1944 and resided in Eaton Rapids for most of their marriage. Eddie was active with the 40 and 8 and the American Legion Post #15, participating in many Fourth of July celebrations and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids. He worked for many years in local factories and also owned and operated Eddie’s Smoke Shop in Eaton Rapids.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Dorathea (Covey); daughters, Nanci (Al) Perkins of Texas, Ruthanne (Ray) Ovenhouse of Eaton Rapids, and Renee Jean Manger of Santa Monica, CA; his son, Don (Julie) Manger of Kendallville, IN; 4 grandchildren, Carrie (Bruce) Klein, John McHugh, Michelle and David Manger; 4 great-grandchildren, Heather, Danielle, and Tyler Klein, Thomas McHugh, all of whom were a source of great joy to him; a sister, Hilda Dourrieu of New Orleans, LA; many nieces and nephews. Remembered also are special friends, Dan and Sarah Watts and their children, William and Margaret of New Jersey.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 30th, at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors provided by the American Legion Post #15 in the Munger Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to a charity of choice or a kindness passed along to someone else in memory of Edward “Eddie” Manger.
Leo Marisch
Leo Marisch, 76, of Nashville, died Jan. 7, 1999 at Pennock Hospital in Hastings.
Mr. Marisch was born Oct. 21, 1922 in Puritan, Penn., the son of John and Anna (Ivancic) Marisch. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1943 and married Grace Seymour in Battle Creek Feb. 24, 1951. He was a long time area livestock farmer, raising registered Haflinger ponies and belonged to the Michigan Farm Bureau.
He is survived by three daughters, Twilla (Jerry) Gibbons of Dowling, Cindy Marisch of Alexandria, VA, and Sharon (Stephen) Jury of St. Johns; one son, Garry (Tanya) Marisch of Holt; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline (Roy) Tesch of Albion and Helen (Leon) Ackett of Nashville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, June 18, 1994; two sisters, Magdalena Davidson and Dorotha Guyer; and two brothers, John and Joseph Marisch.
Services were Jan. 11 at the Maple Valley Chapel Funeral Home, Vermontville, with the Rev. Ken Vaught officiating. Interment was in the Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo Township, Eaton County.

Norma Marsh
Norma Margaret Marsh, 75, died Jan. 10, 1999 after a 10-month battle to overcome a stroke.
Ms. Marsh was born Aug. 24. 1923 in rural Vermontville the daughter of Alonzo and Edna (Vanderburg) Marsh. She was a member of the Sunfield Sunflower Lioness Club, in which she worked very hard. She devoted her entire life to taking care of others and had a special place in her heart for all the children she ever cared for. They called her “Grandma Norm.” She loved her family, home and pets.
She is survived by one sister, Mary (Robert) Aspin of Mulliken; two foster daughters, Patricia (Mark) Sova of Fort Meyers, Fla., and Charlene Wolf of Miami, Fla.; three grandsons, Gary Wilcox, Gregory Wilcox, and Timothy Ogle, all of Lake Odessa; one granddaughter, Stormie Sova of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Cody and Cari Wilcox; two nephews, Howard (Sandra) Marsh of Okemos and Gary (Carol) Marsh of Charlotte; many other nieces and nephews; two sister-in-laws, Reva Marsh and Helen Marsh; one brother-in-law, Winston Lake; and special family, Ken, Kathleen, Katrina, Kalvin and Kelsie Black of Sunfield.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther and Opal, and four brothers, Howard, Robert, Donald and Fred.
Services were Jan. 13 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Donald Woolum officiating. Interment was in the Sunfield Cemetery.

Geraline Martenies
Geraline L. Martenies, 79, of Lansing died Monday, March 1, 1999.
Mrs. Martenies was born Nov. 28, 1919 in Charlotte. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte, a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Harrison Auxiliary Aerie #3541, in Harrison; and a lifetime member of the VFW Charlotte Post #2406 Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by four daughters, Wanda (Cecil) Cook of Potterville, Mary Ann (Frank) Wilkinson of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., Joyce (Robert) Schultz of Grand Blanc, and Lorraine (Jeff) Burchett of Pleasant Lake; three sons, George Whitinger III of Battle Creek, David (Shelly) Martenies of Lansing, and Allen (Krista) Martenies of Westville, Ind.; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ralph (Lois) Shaver of Huntsville, Ark.; and one sister-in-law, Marge Shaver of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Melvin and Larry Whitinger; one grandchild, Sheri Jo Elliot; one great-grandchild, Casey Willis; and one brother, Melvin Shaver.
Services were held March 5 at the First Baptist Church of Charlotte with the Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel, Lansing.

Doris Martens
Doris (Gi Gi) Martens, 82, of Battle Creek, formerly of Bellevue, died Nov. 28, 1999 at home.
Mrs. Martens was born Sept. 2, 1917 in Maple Grove, the daughter of Silas and Minnie (Borror) Dull. She attended Nashville High School, and married Kenneth Martens on May 27, 1936. She was a member of the Etc. Club in Bellevue, and enjoyed square dancing, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.
She is survived by two daughters, Pat (David) Brocker of Livingston, Texas, and Pamela Newberry of Battle Creek; two sons, Kenneth (Cindy) of Charlotte, Doug (Eileen) of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Olive Sears and Cecile Anderson, both of Nashville, Lavona Majeski of Shelby and Myrtle Mapes of Bellevue; and one brother, Hubert Dull of Nashville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Aug. 25, 1977 and brothers, Guy, Loring, Lester, and Dewey Dull.
Services were Dec. 1 at Bellevue United Methodist Church with Pastors Gordon Pippin and Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Thomas Martens
Thomas Martens, 50, of Battle Creek died Dec. 5, 1999 at home following a long illness.
Mr. Martens was born June 1, 1949 in Battle Creek, the son of Roger and Mary (Westcott) Martens. He lived most of his life in Battle Creek and Bellevue, graduating from Bellevue High School in 1967, and living the last seven years in Battle Creek. He worked from 30 years in the wholesale electrical industry at Kendall Electric, Michigan Electric, and Purchase Electric, and the last seven years as branch manager at Medler Electric, Battle Creek. He enjoyed building model cars and airplanes, home remodeling and woodworking, hot rod and custom car shows, and volunteering at the Battle Creek hot air balloon events.
He is survived by his wife, Kathlene (McKay); one daughter, Sgt. Amanda (Steve) Lopez of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Scott Martens of Bellevue and Chad Martens of Berkley, Calif.; two grandchildren; one sister, Kathy Martens of Jackson; and one brother, David (Terrie) Martens of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gerald Martens.
Services were Dec. 8 at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, with the Rev. Mike Donahue officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.
