April Martin
April (Fluke) Martin, 41, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 10, 1999.
Mrs. Martin was born April 12, 1958 in Lansing, the daughter of Don and Frances (Ohm) Fluke.
She is survived by her parents, Don and Frances Fluke of Dimondale; two sons, Curtis and Corey Martin of Charlotte; one sister, Diana (Ed) Pearce of Clarkston; two brothers, Mark Fluke of Lansing and Tim Fluke of Dimondale; his grandmother, Frances Ohm of Lansing; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Services were Sept. 13, 1999 at the Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing. Interment was in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
Wayne Masters
Wayne “Hank” Masters, 76, of Olivet died Oct. 8, 1999 at the Battle Creek Health Systems, Leila Site.
Mr. Masters was born in Convis Township, Calhoun County, the son of Frank and Emma (Jones) Masters and was a lifelong area resident. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was employed at Oliver Corp. in Battle Creek from 1947-62 and the Kellogg Co. in Battle Creek from 1965-1986, from which he retired. He was a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge #676 and Maple City Post #2406 VFW in Charlotte. For many years he played the banjo at dances, parties, nursing homes, and senior citizen functions. He was playing his banjo for a seniors’ function on the evening of Oct. 7 in Ionia when taken ill.
He is survived by his wife, Doris (Rundle), to whom he was married Feb. 20, 1948; two daughters, Jane (Bill) Steinke and Amy (Mark) Holden, both of Olivet; one son, Douglas Masters of Marshall; four grandchildren, Michele and Renae Judd, Jennifer Masters and Dustin Holden; one brother, Robert (Doris) Masters of Charlotte; and two sisters, Lois (Ralph) Shaver of Charlotte and Delores (Kenneth) Carleton of Olivet.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Cindy Judd in 1980 and three brothers, Howard, Paul and William Masters.
Services were Oct. 11 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Winford Collins officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility Activities Department.
William Masters
William J. Masters, 78, of Convis Township died March 18, 1999 at Battle Creek Health Systems following a long illness.
Mr. Masters was born Aug. 9, 1920, the son of Emma (Jones) Masters in a home one-half mile from where he had lived all his life. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the European Theater. He married Betty Bargy May 27, 1948 in Lansing. He retired in 1982 after 35 years with Kellogg’s in Battle Creek, where he was a painter in the maintenance department. He was a member of Stanley E. Lamb American Legion Post and the Kellogg’s 25-year Club. He and his wife were active in square dancing in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Julia (Charles) Dies of Charlotte and Joyce Masters of Olivet; two grandchildren, Angela and Brenda Dies; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Blackburn; two sisters, Lois (Ralph) Shaver of Charlotte and Delores (Kenneth) Carleton of Olivet; two brothers, Wayne of Olivet and Robert of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were March 20 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall. Interment was in the Porter Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Carl Maxam
Carl Donald Maxam, Jr., of Charlotte, born Sept. 6, 1921 died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999 at the age of 78.
His parents were Edith Harris Maxam of Mayville, Mich. And Carl Donald Maxam of Maldin, Mo. He has one daughter, Jill (Lawrence) Suntken of Charlotte; two granddaughters, Yvonne Suntken (Scott) Visger of Vermontville, Mich. and Felisha Suntken (Allen) Childers of Nashville, Mich.; four great-granddaughters, Ashley and Mackenzie Visger of Vermontville, Mich., and Allyssa and Alison Childers of Nashville, Mich.; and one great-grandson, Taylor Visger of Vermontville, Mich.; three sisters, Joan Johnson of Millington, Mich., Roberta DeVore of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gail Casper of Mayville, Mich., and a special friend Carrie Satterly of Charlotte.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife Eva A. Schrader of Caro, Mich.; a brother, Robert; two sisters, Geraldean and Glenda; a great-grandson, A.J. Childers of Nashville, Mich.; and a brother-in-law, Jack Johnson of Fostoria, Mich.
He volunteered at the Eaton Community Hospice, enjoyed watching birds, gardening, fishing, playing cards and was a member of VFW Post 2406.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Howard Belknap officiating. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Earl Midlam
Earl Richard Midlam, 80, of rural Olivet died Oct. 9, 1999 at Oaklawn Hospital, surrounded by his wife and children.
Mr. Midlam was born March 29, 1919, the son of E. Earl and Anna Midlam in their farm home on 23 Mile Road, Olivet. He was a graduate of Striped Country School and a lifelong resident of Lee Township. He eloped with Hazel Mae Cushman Feb. 14, 1941. He was a lifelong farmer and for many years sold farm equipment and did custom baling and combining. He remained active in farming and as recently as July helped put up hay. He was a Lee Township supervisor for several years, served on the Calhoun County School Board, was active in politics, and a member of the Farm Bureau and Victory Lane Assembly of God. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farm auctions, mechanical work, playing harmonica and international travel.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Hazel Mae; five daughters, Sheila (Tim) McConnel of Oostburg, Wis., Marcia Midlam of Marshall, Lisa Midlam of Vancouver, Wash., Linda Young of Olivet and Trina Walton of Olivet; four sons, Melvin Midlam, Richard (Mary) Midlam and Dale Midlam, all of Olivet, and Ken (Becky) Midlam of Rogers, Ark.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Florence Gerkin; and one daughter, Brenda Young.
Services were Oct. 13 at the First Assembly of God, Olivet. Interment was in the Rice Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lou Gehrig’s Association in memory of Mr. Midlam’s daughter, Brenda Young, or to the Olivet First Assembly of God, to be used for specific projects.
Christine Millard
Christine W. Millard, 90, of Grand Ledge passed away Jan. 9, 1999, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Millard was a lifelong area resident, a member of the First Congregational Church of Christ, and enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
Surviving are her daughters, Shirley Dayton of Grand Ledge and Joan (Jack) Hine of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Harrison, and daughter, Wilma Huyck.
Services were Jan. 12 at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with Rev. John Baumgartner officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Congregational Church or Eaton Community Hospice.
Roberta E. Mitchell
Roberta E. Mitchell, age 89, died Monday, October 25, 1999 in Charlotte. Roberta was born June 29, 1910 in Onondaga, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie M. (McKessy) Sanford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell C. and her brother, Bernard A. Sanford.
Surviving are her son, Richard (Marilyn) Lyons of Eaton Rapids, 3 grandchildren, Kimberly, Jennifer and Christopher Lyons.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Arrangements were by Shelly-O’Dell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Public Library in memory of Roberta Mitchell.
Illa Mohre
Illa Vivian Mohre, 64, of Charlotte died Sept. 20, 1999.
Mrs. Mohre was born July 21, 1935 in Lake City, the daughter of Christian and Gertrude (James) Wagner. She owned and operated Illa’s Tendercare Adult Foster Care Home in Charlotte. She was a member of Grace Brethren Church, Lansing, and enjoyed watching her grandchildren, sports and activities.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Mohre Sr.; three daughters, Trudy NeeSmith of Charlotte, Candy (Tom) Taylor of Dimondale, and Penny (Scott) Cooper of Charlotte; two sons, Kenneth Jr. (Deborah) and Don (Sue), both of Charlotte; two sisters, Opel Thayer of Fenwick and Ella Alexander of Sheridan; five brothers, Delmer Wagner of Dimondale, Wayne Wagner of Sheridan, Douglas Wagner of Crystal Lake, Richard Wagner of Grand Ledge, and James Wagner of Dimondale; 11 grandchildren, Christa (Kris) Russell, Kenneth Mohre III, Kacey Mohre, Jeffrey Mohre, Amanda Taylor, Neil Taylor, Courtney Cooper, Carley Cooper, Rian Mohre, Chad Rodriguez, C.J. Pettigrew; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Russell.
Services were Sept. 23 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing.
