Phillip Nightengale
Phillip John Nightengale, 79, of Potterville, died Oct. 17, 1999.
Mr. Nightengale was born Nov. 25, 1919 in Potterville, the son of Aime and Celeste (Vleeselower) Nightengale. He was a farmer all his life.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Verda (Whitney); two daughters, Sharon Nightengale of Charlotte and Cathy Nightengale-McHalpine of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Sara Saylor, Suzanne Whitney and Matthew McHalpine; one sister, Alice Rice of Potterville; one sister-in-law, Norma Nightengale of Lansing; several in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by one son, Phillip John Jr., his parents, two brothers, Robert and Albert Nightengale, and one sister, Gabrielle Van Loton.
Services were Oct. 20 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Fr. Mark DeHetre officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Potterville-Benton Twp. Fire Department Ambulance Service or Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Amelia V. Ninigen
Amelia V. Ninigen, age 97, died Thursday, December 23, 1999, in Marshall. Amelia was born March 27, 1902 in Bono, Ohio the daughter of Anthony and Exline (DeShetler) Jeremy. She was a member of St. Peter Church in Eaton Rapids. Mrs. Ninigen was preceded in death by her husband, John D., in 1976.
Surviving are her daughter, Phyllis A. Rutkowski of Marshall and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed on Monday, December 27, 1999, at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids, with Father Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family received friends at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, on Sunday with a Rosary being prayed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
Mary Norris
Mary Elizabeth Norris, 51, of Charlotte died March 8, 1999.
Mrs. Norris was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Lansing, the daughter of Harold and Vivian (Love) Sattazahn. She sold Avon products, enjoyed exploring flea markets in her electric cart and enjoyed needlepoint and cross stitch. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and little dog, Elfie.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley; two daughters, Connie (Verlin) Lauck and Amy (David) Price; one son, Jason; two granddaughters, Samantha DuPree and Sara; one grandson, Caleb DuPree; one brother, Adolph (Beverly) Roth Jr.; and one half-brother, John (Lorraine) Sattazahn of Onondaga.
She was preceded in death by one sister in 1996.
Services were March 11 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in the West Carmel Cemetery, Eaton County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Michigan.
Betty Northrup
Betty Maxine (Lake) Northrup, 63, of Sunfield, died Feb. 20, 1999 at Sparrow Hospital.
She was born July 16, 1935 in Ionia the daughter of Foster and Viola (Sprague) Lake. Mrs. Northrup married Richard Northrup on Jan. 2, 1954. She was employed at Mapes Furniture Store for several years and most recently at the River Inn Adult Foster Care in Sunfield.
She is survived by three daughters, Linda Smith of Saranac, Nancy Northrup of Lowell, and Dolly (Mike) Sutherland of Sunfield; one son, Larry (Candy) Northrup of Lake Odessa; several grandchildren; three sisters, Irene, Nora Jane and Jeanette; two brothers, Melvin and Lloyd; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; both her parents, Foster and Viola; sister, Pauline; brothers, Austin, John and Foster Jr.; son-in-law, Jack Smith, Jr.; grandson, Kevin Lee Weitzel, Jr.
Services were held Feb. 25 at the North Plains Community Church in Ionia with the Rev. Robert Jourdan officiating. Arrangements were made by the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel of Sunfield.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of the family.
Richard Northrup
Richard “Dick” Otto Northrup, of Sunfield, passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, Feb. 5, 1999 at the age of 65.
Mr. Northrup was born Jan. 2, 1934 in Ionia, the son of Otto and Dalta (Witzel) Northrup. He attended Ionia High School, graduating in 1952. He married Betty (Lake) in Ionia in 1954. He was employed with Felpausch retiring in October 1992. He was also employed by Meijers for several years and owned and operated two local bakeries in Saranac and Lake Odessa. He was a member of the Odd-Fellows of Ionia for several years. He was always quick with a joke and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty; a son, Larry (Candy) Northrup of Lake Odessa; three daughters, Linda Smith of Saranac, Nancy Northrup of Lowell and Dolly (Mike) Sutherland of Sunfield; several grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence and James (Rosemary) Northrup of Ionia; two sisters, Margaret Kukielka of Grand Ledge and Mary Ellen Jeffries of Ionia; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Wayne Sipperley, Sr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Dalta Northrup; one brother, John; one sister, Beatrice; a sister-in-law, Leanie; a son-in-law, Jack L. Smith, Jr.; and a grandson, Kevin Weitzel, Jr.
Services were held Feb. 9 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Duane Walters officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the flower fund.
Sylvia Norton
Sylvia Norton, 95, of Olivet died June 27, 1999 at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.
Mrs. Norton was born Feb. 18, 1904 in Nashville, the daughter of John and Arena (Eldred) Springett, and was a lifelong area resident. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church and its Women’s Fellowship and member and past president of the former Olivet American Association of Retired Persons Chapter #1998.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris Harrington of Olivet; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Sarah Umbarger of Eaton Rapids and Iva LaPoint of Olivet; four stepsons, Leo Norton of Charlotte, Robert Norton of Battle Creek, Neil Norton of Georgia, and Vern Norton of Bellevue; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and step-great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husbands, Lewis Reid and Reuben Norton; two daughters, Evelyn Ruffner and Vonda Copeland; one son, Earl Reid; one granddaughter, Glenda LaBin; one grandson, George Ruffner; two brothers, Harold and Virgil Springett; and one step-daughter, Dorothy Fall.
Graveside services and interment were June 30 at the Olivet Cemetery with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating. Arrangements by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
William Ogden
William Perry Ogden, 76, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died March 19, 1999.
Mr. Ogden was born Aug. 15, 1922 in Battle Creek.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice in 1991.
Services were March 23 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with Fr. John Klein officiating. Interment was in the Olivet City Cemetery.
Donald Okonewski
Donald C. Okonewski, 52, of Charlotte, died Dec. 31, 1998, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after an illness of three months.
Mr. Okonewski was a resident of DeLand’s Adult Foster Care Home, Charlotte, and employed at McDonald’s of Charlotte.
He is survived by four foster sisters, Sharon (Blane) White, Cecil (Coy) Cousins and Peggy Jenson, all of Vermontville and Karen (LeRoy) Halliwill of Charlotte; and three foster brothers, Charles Jenson, Mitchell Jenson, and Joe (Terri) Jenson, all of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Rhonda and Bruce Siple and Eileen Jenson, and one foster brother, Neil Jenson.
Services were Jan. 5 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery in Chester Township.
