Terry T. “Ted” Oliver, Sr.
Terry T. “Ted” Oliver, Sr., age 58, and life resident of Eaton Rapids died Friday, February 19, 1999 while on a response to a house fire. He was born May 14, 1940 in Eaton Rapids the son of Harold L. and Fannie L. (Buchanan) Oliver. Ted was a high school graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School Class of 1958. He was a retired Chief Auditor for Fisher Body, a division of General Motors, in Lansing with 33 years of service. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #602 in Lansing and was currently employed with R.S. Jones Builders in Eaton Rapids. Ted was a volunteer fireman serving the Eaton Rapids area for over 33 years and was currently the Assistant Chief for the Eaton Rapids Fire Department. Preceding him in death are his parents, Harold in 1969 and Fannie in 1973.
Surviving are his wife of over 38 years, Carol; 4 children, Terry Jr., Christine (Steve) Pollard, Troy (Jackie), Cheryn (Jeff) DeLosh; 14 grandchildren; brother, Merle (Barbara); 3 sisters, Betty Dunevant, Marion (Ron) Jessup, Ellen (Jim) Aldrich; mother-in-law, Virginia Decker; many nieces and nephews and cousins and all of his brother firefighters and friends. “God wrapped you in his arms and took you home!”
Funeral services were held Monday, February 22nd from the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Rockney L. Wing Sr. of the Calvary Grace Church officiating. Full graveside honors were provided by the Lansing Fireman Colorguard at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Bill Hendrickson, Jim Mills, Corey Canfield, Scott Perry, Steve Jones, Brian Walker, Jeff Stoner, and Phil Huston. In loving recognition of a man who served his community, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Fire Department in memory of Terry T. “Ted” Oliver, Sr. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Darrel Ott
Darrel Neal Ott, 72, of Charlotte died Friday, March 26, 1999 following a lengthy illness. Mr. Ott was born July 21, 1926 in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, the son of Leonard Ott and Marian (Tooley) Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Susie (Fred) Wieting of Charlotte; sons, Larry Ott of Olivet, Mike (Karen) Ott of East Lansing, Kenneth (Sue) Ott of Albion, Neil Ott of Kalamazoo; step-sons, Doug (Beth) Ripley of East Lansing, Joseph (Barbara) Denherder of Charlotte; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Rush of Arizona, Nancee Brewer of Coldwater, and Jane Vandenheede of Marshall.
Graveside services were Monday, March 29, 1999 at the Clarence Center Cemetery. If desired memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Ervin “Erv” V. Ottney
Ervin “Erv” V. Ottney, age 70, of Onondaga died Sunday, November 28, 1999 in Jackson. Ervin was born May 7, 1929 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Edward Orrin and Mildred (Locke) Ottney. He was a master of mechanics, devoting his entire working career to the repair of heavy equipment, heavy duty trucks and automobiles. Erv was a collector of classic cars, enjoyed flea markets, good food and spending time with close friends Rod Taylor, George Morris and cousin, Dick Locke. He was preceded in death by his sister, Georgette McPhail; daughter, Cynthia Delaney and his mother, Mildred Ottney.
Surviving are his wife, Joan M.; son, Wayne (Jeni) Ottney of Eaton Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Nick & Jason Ottney, Dan & Kelly Delaney all of Eaton Rapids; father, Edward O. Ottney of Canada; 2 brothers, Frank (Gladys) Ottney of Eaton Rapids, Bill Ottney of Canada; 2 sisters, Louise Hoyt of New York state, Janeane (Carman) Crosby of Canada; sister-in-law, Janice Hunt of Lansing; several nieces, nephews, cousins; his poodle, Tamy and his afghan, Tattle.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 1, 1999, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Cremation followed the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Ervin V. Ottney.
Mildred (Locke) Ottney
Mildred (Locke) Ottney of Huntington, Quebec, Canada was born December 19, 1909 and died September 8, 1999. On this date history for the Ottney family was drastically changed by the passing of our Mom. She was a famous lady in our eyes and all her friends who knew her. Very warm and loving, her greatest love of all was her family. She also had a love of flowers and when asked where she lived the reply was south of town, the house with all the flowers. She was the pillar in our family, and sometimes our greatest protector. She was active in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, active in the Rebeccas and was grand matron. A woman of many talents, she was famous for her crewel work and was interviewed on TV with her works of art. She also painted in oils, her talent abounding prior to her illness. The family are all saddened by her passing. This sweet, loving, warm person loved so dearly, will be missed. She raised 6 children and was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Georgette McPhail, Canada; brothers, Clarence Locke, Eaton Rapids and Wilbur Locke, New York; sister, Dehlia Fitzgerald of New York.
She is survived by her husband of 73 years, Edward Ottney, Huntington, Quebec, Canada; 3 sons, Frank, Eaton Rapids, Ervin (Joan) Onondaga, Bill, Canada; 2 daughters, Jeannine Crosby, Canada and Louise Hoyt, New York; 23 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held October 2, 1999 at Gresham Cemetery for interment of her ashes.
Edwin W. “Doc” Owen, D.D.S.
Edwin W. “Doc” Owen, D.D.S., age 78, died Saturday, October 30, 1999 in Lansing. Edwin was born July 2, 1921 in Pontiac the son of Joseph Henry and Myrtie Mae (Isenhath) Owen. He was a member of St. Peter Church and St. Vincent DePaul Society. Doc was a member of the Eaton Rapids Lions Club, American Legion, and the Duck Lake Country Club. He belonged to the American, Michigan and Central District Dental Associations. Ed retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Col. and served in WWII. Dr. Owen retired from his dental practice in Eaton Rapids after 30 years of service.
Surviving are his wife, Annette; 3 children, Robert (Ann) Owen of Orlando, FL, Marjorie (Mike) Howe of Richland, Russell Owen of Dimondale; 3 grandsons, Alex Owen, Michael Howe, and Matthew Howe; brother, Eugene (Connie) Owen of Portland and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian burial was prayed on Monday, November 1, 1999 at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids with Fa. Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the St. Peter Church Building Fund, Eaton Community Hospice, or Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in memory of Dr. Edwin W. Owen. Ramon Palacios
Ramon Palacios, 61, of Lansing died Dec. 9, 1999.
Mr. Palacios was born March 31, 1938 in Crystal City, Texas, the son of Refugio and Petra (Ledesma) Palacios. He had been employed by General Motors for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanine of St. Johns; five daughters, Cynthia (Bill) Plowman of Lansing, Cathy Jo (Jim) Backus and Chrisanna Palacios, both of Charlotte, Shari (Jim) Stockmeyer of Leslie, and Patricia Noell of Buckeye, Ariz.; two sons, Timothy Palacios of Ludington and Ramon (Susan) Palacios Jr. of Spring, Texas; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters; six brothers; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Memorial services will be held at Cristo Rey Church, Lansing, at a later date.
Arrangements were made by the Smith Funeral Homes, St. Johns.
Darwin P. Palmer
Darwin P. Palmer, age 83, of Eaton Rapids died Friday, July 30, 1999 in Eaton Rapids. He was born June 13, 1916 in Bitely, MI, the Newaygo County, the son of Ford and Ethel (Emerson) Palmer. Dar was a graduate of Big Rapids High School class of 1935, he moved to Eaton Rapids in 1936 and worked at farming. In 1981 he retired from the Eaton Rapids Public Schools with 16 years of service as a custodian. Preceding him in death was a sister, Florence Bolles.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty; 3 children, Rita Fernald, Ray (Velda) Palmer and Ned (Teri) Palmer all of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and one sister, Clinton (Mary) Palmer of Oregon, Sarah Andrews of Marne, MI, and Bill (Martha) Palmer of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held on Monday, August 2, 1999, at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Lambert McClintic, retired Pastor of the Griffith United Methodist Church officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were grandsons, Jon E. Fernald, Eric Palmer, Brian Palmer, Jeff Dassance, Jake Dassance and Scott
Twichell. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Darwin P. Palmer.
Delva Paton
Delva Paton, 50, of Bellevue, died Nov. 4 at her home.
Miss Paton was born Oct. 13, 1949 in Traverse City, the daughter of Robert and Helen (Howell) Paton. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1967 and earned an associate’s degree in business and marketing. She worked at Federal Home Life Insurance and later HBJ from 1968-87. From 1987-99, she was a secretary for the student employment office at Olivet College, and was a data analyst for enrollment services. She enjoyed reading, computer games, crocheting and collecting porcelain dolls and plates. She was active with the former Bellevue Rescue Squad.
She is survived by one sister, Christi Miller of Bellevue; niece, Dulcey Baker of Bellevue; nephew, Dale Miller of Battle Creek; great nieces, Kami Baker of Bellevue, Jennifer Baker of Dansville, Ken., Rachel Reeves of Battle Creek; great-great-niece, Blossom Reeves; and great-great-nephew, Scottie Reeves.
Services were Nov. 8 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Patricia Lindquist officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.
