Betty Rugg
Betty Rugg, 69, of Battle Creek, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999 at home.
Mrs. Rugg was born June 11, 1930 to Carl and Hazel (Dowd) Norris in Delton. She married Samuel L.D. Rugg on Aug. 16, 1948 in Charlotte; he survives. She was employed by Kellogg Company Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School; the Crank and Throttle Car Club; the Kellogg 25-Year Club; and Moops of the Church. She and her husband raised Cade and Craig Rugg after their mother was killed in an auto accident in 1977. She enjoyed traveling, watching her grandchildren in sports, music, 4-H events and nature.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her mother of Battle Creek; sons, Stanley (Beverly) Rugg of Bellevue and Stuart Rugg at home; daughter, Linda (Dennis) DeMott of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Yvonne Crago of Battle Creek and Carolyn Kramer of Muskegon.
She was preceded in death by her father; daughter-in-law, Janice Rugg; and a grandson, Christopher Rugg.
Services were held Aug. 4 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Rev. Brian Spencer officiating. Interment was at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Pauline Rugg
Pauline Rugg, 86, of Bellevue, died Oct. 2, 1999 at Laurels of Bedford.
Mrs. Rugg was born March 17, 1913 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Edward and Mattie (Smith) Hodges. She married Cyrus Rugg in 1932. She had been a cook for the Kambly School for 18 years, retiring in 1964.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia DeMott of Bitely, Jeannette Criffield of Bellevue, and Sandra Mae Palmer of Delton; four sons, Fred, Donald and Gary, all of Bellevue, and Harold of Battle Creek; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Rose Silvers of Mt. Pleasant.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus in 1981; one sister, Luella Damon; and two brothers, Marion and Morris Hodges.
Services were Oct. 5 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Steve Covert officiating. Interment was in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Betty Russell
Betty M. Russell, 75, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Dec. 27, 1998 in Lansing.
Mrs. Russell was born Nov. 7, 1923 in Detroit, the daughter of Roy and Agnes McHenry. She was a resident of Eaton Rapids for 45 years and employed with Gibson Ford and Bearman Insurance, both in Eaton Rapids.
She is survived by one daughter, Lorelei (Ervin) Lubitz of Sunfield; two sons, William (Cindy) of Eaton Rapids and David (Kim) of Lake Odessa; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Hathaway of Florida; and one brother, William (Mary) McHenry of Springport.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Sr. in 1985.
Services were Dec. 30 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Stephen Klink officiating.
Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Cecelia St. John
Cecelia M. St. John, 80, of Charlotte died Dec. 15, 1999 after an extended illness.
Mrs. St. John was born in Big Rapids, the daughter of Dewey and Sarah (Troupe) Bruner and had been a Charlotte resident since 1954. She was a 1937 graduate of East Jackson High School and attended Jackson Junior College. She had been employed by Charlotte Public Schools as a secretary, retiring in 1981 after 20 ˝ years of service. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and its Deborah Circle and the Charlotte Country Club. Her family expresses appreciation to her special care givers, John and Roxann Moore and Claudia Bryner.
She is survived by two daughters, Judy (Richard) Saurer of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Deborah (Ken) Mohre of Charlotte; two sons, Richard (Joy) of Charlotte and Thomas (Marlene) of Festus, MO; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Edwin in 1993; and two sisters, Doris Stimer and Betty Lou Bruner.
Services were Dec. 18 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Maxon Cemetery, near Jackson. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Richard Sackett
Richard (Dick) Sackett, 92, of Vermontville died Aug. 4, 1999 at Thornapple Manor, Hastings.
Mr. Sackett was born July 24, 1907 in Honor, the son of Richard and Ella Mae (Johns) Sackett. He attended country schools in Lake Odessa, and married Alta Haskell in Oct. 1964 in Angola, Ind. He farmed most of his life, and worked at Johnson’s Lumber Co. in Charlotte since 1936 and worked at the saw mill in Hickory Corners. The last few years, he operated a truck garden.
He is survived by his wife, Alta; one niece, Etta (Ernest) Allen of Belding; one nephew, Clyde (Madeline) Zeigler of Hastings; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services were Aug. 7 at Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville, with the Rev. James Hynes officiating. Interment was in the Fuller Cemetery.
Leroy Sampson
Leroy Benson “Benny” Sampson of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, died at his home on January 4, 1999. He was born January 19, 1925 in Charlotte.
He was the husband of Mary Green Sampson, whom he married June 23, 1950; father of Martha S. Watkins, Adele C. Sampson, and Ralph (Beth) Sampson; grandfather of Maureen, Matthew and Nathan Watkins and Phillip, Valerie and Eric Sampson; brother to Thelsa (Robert) Turner of Charlotte, Mich., and Leon (Helen) Sampson of Artesia, New Mexico; brother-in-law of Marcia W. Green of Fort Meyers Beach, Fla., and Dorothy K. Green of Gregory, Mich.; and uncle to several nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and private family services were held. Arrangements by Tiffany Funeral Home.
James Ervin Sanders
James Ervin Sanders, age 63, of Eaton Rapids died Monday, March 15, 1999. Mr. Sanders was born June 20, 1935 in Joplin, Missouri the son of Ervin and Dell (Martin) Sanders. He had been involved in bowling leagues, boy scouts, a truck driver for Alvan Motor Freight, enjoyed old trucks and woodworking including a 3-child rocking horse for Governor Engler. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, in 1996; son, Jack in 1992; and daughter, Jodi in 1991.
He is survived by son James Sanders of Eaton Rapids; brothers, Herbert (Norma) Sanders of Maryland, Charles (Beverly) Sanders of Ann Arbor, Robert (Karen) Sanders of Percell, Missouri, and Ronnie (Mary) Sanders of Joplin, Missouri; sisters, Janet Sanders of Kentucky, Katherine Clayton of Web City, Missouri, Vida (Tom) Johns and Vera (Gene) Griffith both of Carls Junction, Missouri; and special friends, Martin, Lee, and Laura Owen.
Funeral services were held March 8, 1999 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment will be in Springport Cemetery in Springport, Michigan.
Arrangements were prepared by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
David Satterly
David Byron Satterly, 73, of Algonac, formerly of Charlotte, died Aug. 24, 1999.
Mr. Satterly was born Nov. 9, 1925 in Eaton County, the son of Arthur and Marguerite (Baker) Satterly. He had worked for Chrysler Motors before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the St. Paul Episcopal Church and Lions Club of Harsen Island. He enjoyed woodworking, sketching, and painting and had been a Scout leader.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ella Marie (Norris); four sons, Leonard (Hazel) of Charlotte, Norris (Hazel) of Iron Mountain, Byron (Pam) of Sterling Heights, and Christopher (Linda) of Algonac; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Audrey Steward and Florence Hillard, both of Charlotte.
Services were Aug. 27 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with the Rev. Darrell Ovenshire officiating.
