Virgil Saurer

Virgil Saurer, 88, of Hastings, formerly of Lake Odessa and Charlotte died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999 at the Laurels of Sandy Creek Nursing Home, Wayland.

Mr. Saurer was born in Laud, Ind., the son of John and Nelda (Lung) Saurer and had been a resident of Hanover House in Hastings since 1998. He lived at Tupper Lake in Ionia County near Lake Odessa for 25 years before moving to Hastings. He joined the U.S. Navy after high school in Pleasant Lake, Ind. His career in the U.S. military services was as a member of the Navy, Army and Air Force, from which he retired as a master sergeant in June 1953 after 25 years of total service. Following his military career, he was a game warden for the Alaska Fish and Wildlife Department in Fairbanks. He was a life member of VFW Post #4461 in Lake Odessa. He married to Leilah Cochrane Feb. 23, 1943.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Leilah on June 7, 1978, and two brothers, Reuben Saurer in 1977 and John Saurer in 1985.

Military graveside services and interment were Oct. 20 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with VFW Post #4461 officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VRFW National Home, Eaton Rapids.

Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Marion Schaibly

Marion Iris (Terry) Schaibly died at Blowing Rock Hospital in Blowing Rock, NC on Sat. Jan. 30, 1999.

Prior to her illness she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Jerry Stilley. Marion was born on her family farm outside Eaton Rapids, MI on Dec. 4, 1913 to parents, Horace Walter “Walt” Terry and Ida Irene Taylor of Onondaga. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1931 and entered college at Ypsilanti where she completed studies in education and took her first teaching assignment in the county school system at the school in Aurelius in 1935. In addition to teaching, during the WWII years, Marion worked in a defense plant in Lansing that produced aircraft cockpit instrument parts for the U.S. war effort. After the war, Marion was Personnel Director at J.W. Knapp in Lansing and held other administrative positions in Cleveland and Houston city governments.

Marion was a resident of Hickory, NC before retiring at the Advent Christian Center in Dowling Park, FL where she lived for 13 years, returning to North Carolina to live in 1995. She was an avid genealogist and held memberships in a number of genealogical organizations; Daughters of American Revolution (DAR), the Daughters of American Clergy (DAC), the Hugenot Society and the Eaton County Genealogical Society. Her research on the Terry family has been published in two noted genealogical writers’ works and other periodicals. She was greatly comforted all her life by her faith and was a member of the advent Christian Church in Hickory and Dowling Park.

Survivors include one daughter, Lynette Arbour (Jerry) Stilley of Hickory, NC; 3 grandsons, David Frye, Edward Frye, Andrew Frye, and one great-granddaughter, Erica Frye all of Hickory, NC.

A graveside service will b e held at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to World Vision or charity of their choice in memory of Marion Schaibly. Funeral arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Hazel Schenck

Hazel I. Schenck, 89, of Charlotte, formerly of Olivet and Battle Creek, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 at Moore’s Adult Foster Care Home.

Mrs. Schenck was born in Bellevue, the daughter of Ernest and Maude (Corlis) Berry. She was a 1928 graduate of Bellevue High School and had been employed as a secretary for the Olivet Community Schools from where she retired. Prior to that she had been employed by the former Wilcox-Gay Co. and Aluminum Extrusions Co. both in Charlotte. She was a member of the Christian Science Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Ann (Kenneth) Sparks of Charlotte and Sally Irene (Sam) Dowding of Raleigh, NC; one son, Lyle (Darlene) Schenck of Portage; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Schenck in 1969; a sister, Ruth Harpster; and a brother, Lester Berry.

Services were held Jan. 24 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte with the Rev. Dr. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Olivet Community Schools.

Dorothy M. Searing

Dorothy M. Searing, age 84, died Sunday, November 14, 1999, in Charlotte. Dorothy was born October 14, 1915 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Samual Warren & Hazel Bell (Burleson) DeWaters. She was a physical therapy aide at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. Dorothy was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Anderson, in 1952; her second husband, Robert Searing in 1978; sister, Evelyn Jones; and brother, Warren DeWaters.

Surviving are her daughter, Joan Hicks of Virginia; 3 sons, Larry (Lorene) Anderson of Jackson, Chester (Mary) Anderson of Eaton Rapids, Barry (Rita) Searing of Mason; 3 step-daughters, Beverly Green, Becky Walters, and Vicki Searing; 2 step-sons, David and Robert Searing; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Milo (Virginia) DeWaters of Jackson; 2 sisters, Violet Patterson of Tecumseh, Hattie Boobier of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, 12 noon, November 16, 1999, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Margaret Seavolt

Margaret Seavolt, 92, of Sunfield, formerly of Mulliken, died July 10, 1999 at her home.

Mrs. Seavolt was born Feb. 17, 1907 in Eagle Township, Clinton County, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Tillema) Rathfoot.

She is survived by two daughters, Louanna (Charles) DeLand of Sunfield and Dorna (Dale) Fairbotham of Palmetto, Fla.; three sons, Jerald (Connie) of Vermontville, Ronald (Yvonne) of Charlotte and Levon (Rose) of Sunfield; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services were July 13 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with the Rev. Dale Fairbotham officiating. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Theodore Seavolt

Theodore F. Seavolt, 94, of Sunfield, formerly of Mulliken, died Feb. 1, 1999 at his home.

Mr. Seavolt was born Dec. 28, 1904 in Roxand Township, the son of George and Cermantha (Bennett) Seavolt. He was a farmer, had worked at the Grand Ledge Clay Products, retired from the Charlotte Chair Co., and was a minister and member of the Fundamental Ministers’ Association.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret; two daughters, Louanna (Charles) DeLand of Sunfield and Donna (Dale) Fairbotham of Palmetto, Fla.; three sons, Jerald (Connie) of Vermontville, Ronald (Yvonne) of Charlotte and Levon (Rose) of Sunfield; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lulu Gregg of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services were Feb. 5 at the Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with the Rev. Dale Fairbotham officiating. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.

Glen E. Seeley

Glen E. Seeley, age 74, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, January 27, 1999 at a Lansing hospital. He was born October 17, 1924 in Cadillac, MI the son of John P. and Beulah (Olney) Seeley. Glen was raised in Manton, MI and graduated from Manton High School Class of 1944. Glen moved to Eaton Rapids and had worked for Burkholder’s Standard Station, he then owned and operated Glen’s Leonard Service Station on the north end of Eaton Rapids from 1957-1962. After 1962 he went to work for Eaton Farm Bureau in Charlotte as a Tankwagon driver, delivering fuel oil to many Eaton Rapids area customers. Glen also spent time working at farming.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Pat; 5 children; Michael (Rhea) Seeley of Grand Rapids, John (Linda) Seeley of Wesminster, CA, Robert (Jody) Seeley of Grafton, VA, Sandy (Ruben) Mendoza of Lansing, and Shirley (Randy) Vetter of Big Rapids; 13 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild; 2 brothers, George (L.E.) Seeley of Coldwater and Bill (Jayne) Seeley of Canadian Lakes; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 30, from the First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Boles and Rev. Dennis Perkins officiating. Interment followed in the Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Honorary bearers were Max Converse, Lao Kunkel Sr., and Phillip Mendoza. Active bearers were Stan Black, Stan Bell, Ed Jecks, Ralph Allswede, Chad Seeley, and Jay Seeley. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the First Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Andrew Sellers Jr.

Andrew Sellers Jr., 65, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, June 15, 1999 as the result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Sellers had been a long-time employee of Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte, and as a result of the accident became an organ donor. He lived a very full and happy life, especially enjoying time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Ann; two daughters, Linda Clouse of Winter Haven, Fla., and Julie (Allen) Simons of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; two sons, Gary (Jackie) of Lake Placid, Fla. and Eric (Tracie) of Palm Bay, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Michael Clouse, Catherine Dyer, Marianne Clouse, Tamara Simons, A.J. Simons, Ryan Sellers, Jason Sellers, Daniel Sellers, and Alicia Sellers; one great-grandchild, Autumn Marie Clouse; three sisters, Lois Dunn and Jennie Mae Gaskins of North Carolina and Louise Davis of Kansas.

He was preceded in death by a son, James, two brothers, James and Monroe; one sister, Ruby Paul, and his parents, Carrie and Andrew Sellers Sr.

A memorial service was held June 19 at the North Fort Myers Memorial Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice.
