Gladys Spotts

Gladys M. Spotts, 98, of Charlotte, died Jan. 1, 1999.

Mrs. Spotts was born Sept. 28, 1900 in Charlotte, the daughter of Robert and Anna (Southworth) Casler. Mrs. Spotts was a life member of the Brookfield Eastern Star #352.

She is survived by one daughter, Velma Jean (Harold) Dingman of Bellevue; one son, Robert of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Dennis (Laraine) Dingman, Duane (Janice) Dingman, Doyle (Renee) Dingman, Diane (Dennis) Kelly, Randy Spotts, Bradley (Carrie) Spotts, and Cindy (Steve) Lowing; 12 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray in 1975.

Services were Jan. 4 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Geri Litchfield officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth M. Squires

Kenneth M. Squires, age 60, of Houghton Lake, Michigan, died June 20, 1999 at home. Mr. Squires was born in Eaton Rapids May 10, 1939 the son of Kenneth and Grace (Oberlin) Squires. He moved to Houghton Lake from Eaton Rapids 25 years ago where he married Ilene “Bobbie” Towne December 20, 1980. Mr. Squires had worked several years as a tool and die machinist. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Maxine Sellen in 1991.

Surviving are his wife, Ilene “Bobbie” Squires of Houghton Lake; 3 sons, Kenneth, Jeff, and Shawn; one daughter, Robin; several grandchildren including Brittany Sellen of Houghton Lake; and sister, Becky Whittaker of Springport.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26, 1999, 11 a.m. at Houghton Lake Bible Church, Houghton Lake, MI with Pastor Dan Swab officiating. Burial will take place at Lake Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake. If desired, memorials may be directed to the family. Funeral arrangements were by the Chirstler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake, MI.

James Stanton

James A. Stanton, 71, of Indian River, formerly of Charlotte, died Nov. 9, 1999 after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Stanton was born in Charlotte Dec. 15, 1927 and was a lifelong resident of Charlotte before retiring to Indian River. He was retired from Tom Fisher Home Sales, Indian River, and was a former employee of Davis Pontiac in Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Judy of Indian River; one daughter, Karen (Brian) Stults of Charlotte; two sons, Eric (Carrie) of Charlotte and Mark (Betsy) of Wacousta; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five sisters, Clara (Bub) Squires of Falmouth, Dorothy (Marcus) McLauchlin of Berrien Springs, Kay (Warren) Reen of Battle Creek; Jo (Clarence) Morse of Bellevue and Ruth Green of Alamo, Texas; and two brothers, Bill (Shirley) of Vermontville and Harry (Dorene) of Charlotte.

At Jim’s request his body has been donated to Michigan State University for research.

A memorial service is held this Friday, Nov. 19 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 106 S. Bostwick, Charlotte.

Barbara Starkweather

Barbara Jean (Seeley) Starkweather, 45, of Olivet died Oct. 6, 1999 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Mrs. Starkweather was born Aug. 28, 1954 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Paul and Shirley (Van Syckle) Seeley of Bellevue. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1972 and attended Wright Beauty Academy in Battle Creek, from which she received her beautician’s license. Mrs. Starkweather was employed by Felpausch Express Mart where she worked part-time for six years and was assistant manager for 10 years, later transferring to the Bellevue Felpausch, where she was employed for approximately two years. She enjoyed line dancing with her friends, crafts and decorating her home for the holidays. She collected chickens and Beanie Babies, was an avid Olivet football fan and enjoyed attending baton competitions with her daughter. She married Bob Starkweather Jr. on April 25, 1975.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; one daughter, Heather at home; one son, Ryan Starkweather of Olivet; her parents, Paul and Shirley Seeley Sr.; two sisters, Linda Seume and Terry Wesner of Bellevue; one brother, Paul Seeley Jr., of Bellevue; her in-laws, Bob and Alida Starkweather Sr. of Charlotte; and two sisters-in-law, Sue Hayward of Texas and Wendy Carpenter of Wyoming.

She was preceded in death by grandparents, Harold and Velma VanSyckle, Hazel Hales, and Marie Gamble.

Services were Oct. 9 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Olivet Athletic Boosters.

Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Joyce K. Steinhauser

Joyce Kay (Stuber) Steinhauser, 58, of Lansing died Feb. 18, 1999.

She was a long-time area resident and life member of VFW Women’s Auxiliary Post #6132 Lansing.

Surviving are her husband, John; sons, Jeff Oleson of Lansing and Jim Oleson of Alabama; six grandchildren; sister, Connie Jenks of Lansing; brothers, Elbert (Kay) Stuber Jr. of Holt, Jack (Marsha) Stuber of Tennessee, and Robert (Connie) Stuber of Mulliken; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Elizabeth Stuber.

Private family services were held. Arrangements were handled by Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Belva Steward

Belva Jane (Mitchell) Steward, 84, of Marshall, formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 18, 1999 at Marshall Manor after a long illness.

Mrs. Steward was born in Fowlerville, the daughter of James and Delia (Lyman) Mitchell. She is survived by one sister, Nellie (William) Bennett of Lansing, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Steward June 8, 1974; two sisters, Geraldine Shepard and Sara Ordiway, both in 1997; and one brother, Chet Mitchell in 1971.

Services were Sept. 23 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Rev. Michael Arnold officiating. Interment was in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Alice Childs Storey

Alice Childs Storey, age 92, of Jackson, died July 17, 1999 after an illness of several months. Alice was born December 28, 1906 in rural Eaton County, Michigan, the first child of Earl and Flossie (Barnes) Childs. She commenced her education in a one-room country schoolhouse, and graduated, third in her class, from Eaton Rapids High School at age sixteen. She immediately secured a position in the Jackson County Courthouse and worked at various businesses in the city of Jackson. Her last employer being the Watling-Lerchen & Company where she was secretary for thirty years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jackson. As long as her health permitted, she was a volunteer for her church, Red Cross Blood Drives and other worthy causes. She was also past president of the Park Forest Resident’s Association, parliamentarian and publisher of Park Forest Newsletter.

On June 12, 1937 she was united in marriage to Wesley C. Storey. He preceded her in death July 24, 1974, as did one brother, R.B. Childs of Leslie, and a sister, Rose (Childs) Smith of Eaton Rapids. Alice is mourned by sister Glenna Droscha of Aurelius Township, Ingham County and many nieces and nephews. Her family deeply appreciated all the many loving acts of kindness performed by her friends at the Park Forest High Rise in Jackson. Without their help she would not have been able to maintain her residence there for so long.

Funeral services will be held at the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids, Michigan, on Thursday, July 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend George Chaffee officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 21, 1999 from 2-4 p.m. at the Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, Jackson, Michigan. Sympathy may be expressed by donations to the Salvation Army.

Keith Herbert Strang

Keith Herbert Strang, age 66, died Thursday, November 11, 1999, in Lansing. Keith was born August 21, 1933 in Eaton Rapids the son of Charles R. and Augusta B. (DeClercq) Strang. He retired from Eaton Technologies in 1993 after 31 years of service. Keith loved hunting, fishing, golfing and was an avid pool player.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; 2 daughters, Shari (Darwin) Persons of Olivet, Sue (Larry) Aleo of Grand Ledge; son, Robert (Vickie) Strang of Lansing; 2 step-daughters, Vicki Lease of Traverse City, Janie (Mark) Fitzgerald of Lansing; 6 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 14, 1999, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Robert Betts officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to either the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Building Fund or to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in memory of Keith H. Strang.
