Brian Sumner
Brian S. Sumner, 39, of Potterville, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998.
Mr. Sumner was born Aug. 3, 1959 in Charlotte, the son of Bernard and Shirley (Walters) Sumner. He was a retired Captain of the Michigan National Guard. A member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, a Potterville School Board member, spokesperson for National Kidney Foundation and had coached Little League football and baseball teams.
He is survived by his wife, Christine; two daughters, Amandajean and Chelsey, both of Potterville; a son, Brian of Potterville; his parents, Bernard and Shirley Sumner; a sister, Jayne (Timothy) Anderson of Charlotte; a brother, Michael (Aurora) Sumner of Lansing; brother-in-law, Dean (Debbie) Orweller of Iowa; sister-in-law, Allison Mays of Lansing; father-in-law, Charles Mays of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 29 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Nenneau officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
Deborah Sutberry
Deborah (Debbie) Sutberry, 41, of Charlotte, died July 24, 1999 in Eaton County.
Mrs. Sutberry was born Sept. 3, 1957 the daughter of Boyd and Jacquline (Roberts) Welsh. She was a caregiver to the elderly for many years.
She is survived by her husband, Barry; two sons, Justin Welsh and Joshua Galvin; three granddaughters, Kayle, Mercedes and Ravin; mother, Jacquline Welsh; two brothers, Jerald Welsh and Ken (Sharon) Welsh, both of Charlotte; two sisters, Joyce (Dave) Lilly and Diane (Robert) Myers, both of Charlotte.
Services were July 28 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Howard Swan
Howard Swan, age 60, of Riverdale, MI, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died on Sunday, February 7, 1999 in Clarksville, TN. He was born to Clare and Doris (Clark) Swan on January 30, 1939 in Eaton Rapids. Howard worked at Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte for 10 years as a tool and die maker before moving to Alma in 1970. He was then employed by Alma Products for 30 years with his final position being plant manager. He was a member of the Alma Elks.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Riverdale; father, Clare Swan of Eaton Rapids; son, Howard Jr. (Annette) of Clarksville, TN; daughter, Anne (Esteban) Swan-Vanegas of Vestaburg, MI; two grandchildren, Nick Swan and Patrick Swan-Vanegas; and sister, Audrey (Paul) Kerekes of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 11, 1999, 11 a.m. at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home in Riverdale. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with a Graveside service at 3 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Vera E. Swanson
Vera E. Swanson, age 85, died Saturday, June 5, 1999 in Lansing. Vera was born March 13, 1914 in Hastings, the daughter of Isaac and Minnie Newton (Shellenberger) Babcock. She retired from Baryames in 1968 after 25 years of service. Vera survived the Bath School Disaster in 1927. She was preceded in death by her husband Victor Axel “Bob” Swanson in 1992 and her daughter, Wanita Betty Simms in 1961.
Surviving are 1 son, Deleno (Lorie) Heiser of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Lou Ann Loomis, Mary Ann Cooley, Laura Ann Simms, Julie Ann Richards, Cindy Ann Nobach, Hilda Ann Escamilla, Fred Simms, Tom Simms, Pat Simms, and Trina Simms; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lenora Haight and Bessie Sherman.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Betts officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Matthew Taft
Matthew J. Taft, 37, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, February 8, 1999, at his home in Andrews, S. C.

Jack Tanner
Jack Tanner, 87, of Battle Creek, formerly of Bellevue, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Tanner was born August 12, 1912 in Elk Rapids to John and Katherine (Vogell) Tanner. He was employed as a painter and worked for several years with Local 759. He married Waneta Hall in 1932; she died March 7, 1982.
Surviving are sons, Norman “Bud” Tanner of Allendale and Jack Tanner of Lakeland, Fla.; daughter, Delores Snyder of Lakeland, Fla.; brother, Fred Tanner; and sisters, Rosie Sloan and Anna VanZandt, all of Battle Creek.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Mat and John Tanner; and sister, Lena Ballschmeider.
Services were held Sept. 4 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Steve Covert officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

JoAnn Teel
JoAnn Teel, age 69, of Eaton Rapids died Sunday, October 24, 1999 at a Lansing hospital. She was born January 22, 1930 in Mount Clemens, Michigan, the daughter of Edward and Teresa (Kennedy) O’Mara. Mrs. Teel was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Richard H. Teel; 3 children, Mary Jo Teel of Rochester, MI, Barbara Penskar of Portage, MI and Richard E. (Rebecca) Teel of Eaton Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Annie and Luke Penskar and Molly and Kellen Teel; brother, Daniel O’Mara of Port Sanilac; 4 sisters, Mary Maher of Eaton Rapids, Kathleen, Virginia and Patricia O’Mara all of Port Sanilac; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian burial will be Wednesday, October 27th at 11 a.m. at the St. Peter Church in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Fr. Ben Constantine as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with Rosary being recited on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the St. Peter Church in memory of JoAnn Teel.
Melba Claire TenEyck
Melba Claire TenEyck, age 91, died March 24 at Sparrow Hospital. She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on February 14, 1908 to George & Grace Filer and resided there until 1985 when she moved to Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, John Stuart TenEyck; grandson, Rick Gulliver; her parents and 2 brothers. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Sault Ste. Marie, All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing and a life member of War Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Sault Ste. Marie.
She is survived by daughter, Marjorie C. (Richard) Gulliver; son, Gary P. (Lea) of Dallas, TX and son, Michael B. (Mary Ellen) of Idaho Falls, Idaho. Her 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren loved their Grandma Soo Soo and Baba II. Several nieces and nephews survive also.
Visitation was held Friday at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 27, at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Caroline Stacey officiating. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Chapel Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie beside her husband on Tuesday, at 1 p.m., with graveside services conducted by Rev. Candice Burgess of St. James Church. Pallbearers were Gary R. TenEyck, Wendy S. Jones, Rebecca S. Jones, Daniel R. Jones, Kevin J. TenEyck and Richard Gulliver with Richard Teel as Honorary bearer. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, East Lansing, St. James Church, Sault Ste. Marie or Children’s Miracle Network at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.
