Clare Tharp
Clare “Doc” D. Tharp, 79, of Mere Point Road, Brunswick, Maine, formerly of Charlotte, died Oct. 6, 1999, at the Bodwell House after a six-month illness.
Mr. Tharp was born Aug. 1, 1920 in Charlotte, the son of Roy and Ruth (Blanchard) Tharp. He attended Charlotte schools and graduated from Charlotte High School. In 1938, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 22 years, retiring as chief pharmacist mate. He had served in World War II and the Korean War and was attached to the U.S. Marine Corps as a medic for a time.
He was a member of the United Lodge #8 AF&AM of Brunswick, Mr. Vernon Council 2 Royal and Select Masters of Brunswick, Dulap Commandery #5 of Bath, and Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Portland, Maine. He also served as chaplain of St. Paul’s Chapter #14 RAM, was a Past Patron of Hawthorne Chapter #104 of Brunswick and a past Chairman of the Shrine Circus Committee at the Kora Temple, Lewiston, Maine. He had been a member of the Kora Arab Patrol for 43 years and served as its President. He enjoyed taking part in the group’s parades and ceremonials. He was also a charter member and past president of the Merrymeeting Shrine Club, where he was co-chairman of the Shrine Circus Committee and transported and chaperoned fourth graders to Lewiston for the circus. He also served as co-chairman of the Shriner’s Hospital Screening Clinic for children at the Mid Coast Hospital. A member of the American Legion Post #202, Topsham, Maine, he had also been Commander of the Manwaring Moreau Bamforth 616 chapter of the VFW the past three years.
On Sept. 23, a testimonial dinner was held in his honor at the Brunswick Masonic Hall.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Brunswick; two sisters, Cela May Krige of Plymouth and Sarah “Rachel” Wiley of Charlotte; three brothers, Richard of Rochester, N.Y., Ion of Plate, MO, and Carroll of Charlotte; two stepsons, Jim (Patricia) Fleck and Terry (Maureen) Fleck; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn, and one brother, Maurice.
A memorial service was held Oct. 10 at the Brunswick Masonic Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners’ Hospital, in care of Kora Temple, 11 Sabattus St., Lewiston, Maine 04240.
Onalee Them
Onalee May Them, 53, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.
Mrs. Them was born Nov. 28, 1945 in Owosso, the daughter of Thomas and Madres (Fesler) Heise.
She is survived by her mother; her husband, Harold Them; stepson, Ralph Them of Ithaca; step-grandson, Skyler and Kidder; step-great-grandson, Skyler; sisters, Pauline (Albert) Miller, Margaret (Robert) Manns, Geraldine (Marvin) Henry, Donna (Joel) David, Jacqueline (Roger) May; brothers, Edwin (Beverly) Rouse, Gale (Pauline) Heise and Danny (Dana) Heise; mother-in-law, Leonora Them of Charlotte; and close friend Esther Risner.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1959.
Memorial services were held Sept. 4, 1999 at Pray Funeral Home, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating.

Betty B. Thomas
Betty B. Thomas, age 96, died Sunday, September 12, 1999 at her residence in Englewood. Betty was born January 20, 1903 in Shotts, Scotland the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Rose (Russell) Bryce. She was the former owner and operator of the Thomas Variety Store in Bath and retired from the State of Michigan as a timekeeper and secretary. Betty was an accomplished artist and a published author. She loved traveling and gadding about with her husband, family and friends. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; 3 daughters, Elizabeth Schaibly, Phyllis Feguer, and Nancy Ness.
Surviving are her caring son-in-law, O. Dale Ness of Englewood; 12 grandchildren; Susan Wilson, Amy Green, Clint, Brad, and Beth Schaibly, Rod, Tom, and Larry Feguer, Julie Gould, Christina Blair, Stacie Layher, Nicole Ness; 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild; 2 brothers, Alex Bryce of Detroit, Ed (Dorothy) Bryce of Connecticut; and sister, Isabelle McDowell of Oregon.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 23, 1999, 1 p.m. at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids with Marty DeBow, Pastor of the Robbins United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Mona L. “Casler” Thomas
Mona L. “Casler” Thomas, age 73, of Jackson formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at a Lansing hospital. She was born April 24, 1926 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Spurgan and Loretta (Sanders) Casler. Mrs. Thomas was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, Class of 1945. She worked most of her life as a seamstress for several major clothing stores in the Lansing area. She was preceded in death by her husband of 14 years, Gene Thomas, in April of 1997.
Surviving are 2 children; son, Larry Spicknell of Eaton Rapids and daughter, Deborah (Lee) Zuke of Bath; 3 step-children including Dreama Pools of Jackson; 5 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grand and great-grandchildren; brother, Duard Casler of Eaton Rapids and sister, Marion Electa Hughes of Arkansas.
Private interment of ashes will be at a later date in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids next to her husband Gene. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Farley Thompson
Farley Andrew Thompson, 90, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999.
Mr. Thompson was born Nov. 25, 1909 in Jackson Co., Ind., the son of Robert and Mary (Combs) Thompson. He was a farmer and worked for Oldsmobile for 15 years. He was a member of the Center Eaton Church, Brookfield F&AM #439, Horace S. Maynard R.A.M. chapter #82 and the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Juanita (Shumaker); daughter, Vonda Stanton of Charlotte; son, Robert (Alice) Thompson of Seymor, Ind.; grandchildren, Robert A. Thompson, Jane (Larry) Johnston, Eric (Carrie) Stanton, Gina (Scott) Swanson, Mark (Betsy) Stanton, Karen (Brian) Stults; 15 great-grandchildren; and brother, Floyd Thompson of Freetown, Ind.
Funeral services were held Dec. 11 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

John Thompson, Jr.
John E. “Navy John” Thompson Jr., 74, of 132 Superior St., DeTour Village, formerly of Charlotte, died Oct. 9, 1999 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, where he had lived since Sept. 21.
Mr. Thompson was born Jan. 14, 1925 in Lansing, the son of the late John and Irene (Hebert) Thompson Sr. and raised in Charlotte by his grandparents, Edward and Minnie Thompson.
He entered the military, serving his country in the U.S. Navy in World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era, retiring after 21 years of active duty. He then moved to Lansing where he was employed with Story Oldsmobile for a time before moving to DeTour Village in 1983.
He worked for the Western Great Lakes Pilots’ Association on Lake Huron during the summers, retiring in 1992. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and treated as family by his many friends in DeTour Village.
He is survived by one sister, Betty (Jack) Page of Charlotte; one niece, Linda (Ralph) Bloomfield of Mattawan; one nephew, Jack (Jan) Page of Charlotte; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; and five great-great-nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place. Inurnment was in the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek. Arrangements were made by the Passbender Funeral Home, Marquette.
A gathering for the sharing of remembrances of “Navy John” was held Oct. 16 at the Village Inn in DeTour.
Dorothy E. Thomson
Dorothy E. Thomson went home with Jesus near the end of her 76 years, passing away in Eaton Rapids on February 12, 1999. She was born April 8, 1992 to Earl and Bernice Holcomb in Aurelius Twp. She graduated from Mason High School and attended Michigan State University. Dorothy married Bryce E. Thomson in 1946, they lived in Eaton Rapids all their married years, raising two children there. Dorothy was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids. She worked as a teller at the First of America Bank in Eaton Rapids for several years.
Preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Russell C. Holcomb, Dorothy is survived by her husband, Bryce; her daughter, Jill Thomson of Lansing; her son, Brad (Marcia) Thomson of Keller, Texas; and her two granddaughters, Megan and Lydia Thomson of Texas.
Arrangements are being made by Skinner Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids and a memorial service will be held there on Wednesday, February 17 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids or to the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital.
Jeanette Thornton
Jeanette Thornton, 52, of Bellevue died Dec. 11, 1999 at the Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.
Mrs. Thornton was born April 12, 1947 in Marshall, the daughter of Robert and Charlotte (Dowding) Springer. She attended school in Grand Rapids and enjoyed her children, homemaking and traveling.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin Schoenborn of Grand Rapids and Ryan Schoenborn of Rockford; three sisters, Diane Reese and Valerie Barnaby, both of Battle Creek, and Tracie Parker of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Thomas Springer of Three Oaks and Todd Springer of St. Ignace; and special friend, Smokey.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services were Dec. 15 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek.
