Horace R. Treadway
Horace R. Treadway, age 82, died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, in Weatherford, Texas. Memorial services were held July 9th with family members Michael Feese and Mel Doughty officiating. Burial was at Parker Memorial Cemetery in Grapevine, Texas.
He was born April 25, 1917 near Paragould Arkansas, the son of Clara and Edward Treadway. He was next to youngest of seven children and had 3 brothers and 3 sisters, all who preceded him in death.
He came to Lansing, Michigan, when he was 18 to play in a band. He married Willie Doughty at the age of 22 and they had three daughters, Laura Treadway of Detroit, Mary Treadway Lane of Raymond, Colorado, and Sally Treadway of Detroit. The Treadway family moved to Eaton Rapids in the early 50’s. Horace worked at Motor Wheel in Lansing for many years and later at Wheel Horse in Indiana. He was very active in the Eaton Rapids community as a member of the Lions Club and the Masons, and as the local “disc jockey” for the teenagers. He had a great love and talent for music. He played guitar in a local group and spent many hours in the 1950’s and 60’s playing records at high school dances and at the “Canteen” (Gremlin Corners). He traveled from Texas many times to play records for ERHS reunion dances. He loved being with young people and often talked about the kids he “raised” in Eaton Rapids. He enjoyed his three grandsons, Jeff Lane, Jonny Lane, Michael Williams, and granddaughter, Nancy Williams LaPratt. He had four great-grandchildren, Jacob Michael LaPratt, Samantha J. Lane, Jackson Treadway Lane, and Riley O. Lane.
He retired at the age of 48 after suffering three heart attacks. Although he had many physical problems, life was precious to him. His loss of eyesight over the past few years made it impossible to do many of the things he loved to do – read, drive, dance, pound a nail…
He lived in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area for the past 20 years. He married Betty Denman seven years ago. They met at a dance where he loved dancing to what he called the “Texas Swing” played by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. They had recently moved to Weatherford and were building a new home.
He was a gentle, caring man, a hard worker, a generous man who was highly respected. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, family man and friend. We will always be thankful for our wonderful memories of him – his magnetic personality and smile, his sense of humor and his goodness to all who knew him.
Memorials may be directed to the Society to Prevent Blindness.
