Carson B. Ackley
Carson B. Ackley, age 70, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998 in Jackson. Carson was born February 29, 1928 in Eaton Rapids the son of R C and Helen Louise (Crandall) Ackley. He was a member of the St. Peter Church in Eaton Rapids and the Knights of Columbus, St. Peter Council #6534. Carson was a veteran of WWII serving in the Navy SeaBeas. He was preceded in death by his son, James C. Ackley, granddaughter, Carol Lynn Cowles, 2 brothers, Mike and Gary Ackley and Gary’s wife Sandy.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Phyllis J.; 5 daughters, Christine (Loren) Cowles of Springport, Cathy (Bud) Cowles, Carol (Steve) Clarke all of Eaton Rapids, Janice (Jim) Boice of Perry, Mary Ackley of Lansing; daughter-in-law, Sue Ackley Larson of Eaton Rapids, Joseph (Pam) of Charlotte; 25 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jerry (Jan) of Charlotte, Terry (Diane) of Potterville; 2 sisters, Joyce (Don) Miller of Olivet, Dorothy Spring of Springport and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed on Friday, May 22, 1998, at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids with Fa. Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Carson James Ackley, Jonathon Carson Ackley, Christopher Thomas Ackley, Eric Edmund Ackley, Thomas Michael Ackley, Robert Okla Whipple and Stephen Marcus Cowles. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of Carson Ackley. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
LaVance Aldrich
LaVance Burnetta Aldrich, 81, of Vermontville, died Oct. 19, 1998, at Moore’s Adult Foster Care Home in Charlotte.
Mrs. Aldrich was born March 24, 1917 in Vermontville, the daughter of Theodore and Lana (Williams) Northrup. She married Leonard Aldrich Dec. 3, 1938. She was a member of Vermontville Congregational Church and former treasurer of the church and former treasurer for the Woodlawn Cemetery Society.
She is survived by two daughters, Judith (Robert) Starring of Vermontville and Linda Aldrich of Plymouth; two grandchildren, Beth (Doug) Knoll of Nashville and Jeff (Deb) Starring of Battle Creek; three great-grandchildren, Shayna Starring, Aaron Knoll, and Jessica Callender; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard in 1987.
Services were held Oct. 21 at the Vermontville Congregational Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Valley Scholarship fund.
Jeannette M. Alverson
Jeannette M. Alverson, 96, of Eaton Rapids died Jan. 24, 1998, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Alverson was born Jan. 24, 1902 in Belgium, the daughter of Camiel and Leonna (VanCollie) VanSteelandt. She was a retired registered nurse in the Eaton Rapids area.
She is survived by one son, Donald (Joyce) of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Madeline Snow of Okemos; one brother, Oscar VanSteelandt of Grand Rapids; and one sister-in-law, Iva Foote of Eaton Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Alverson.
There will be no visitation or services.
Interment of cremains will be in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Arrangements were made by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
JoAnn Anderson
JoAnn Anderson, 64, of Grand Ledge, died Oct. 22, 1998.
Mrs. Anderson was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Greenville, the daughter of Ercil and Marvel (Sieber) Kortes. She was a graduate of Central Michigan University and began her 41-year teaching career in 1953, teaching in Gowen, Nevins Lake, Stanton, and the Waverly School District, where she taught for 31 years at Colt Elementary School. Since retiring, she continued to volunteer. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Grand Ledge. During her more than 30 years of membership, she had served as Sunday School teacher, youth coordinator, wedding committee chair, finance committee member, and education committee chairperson, as well as volunteering in the church office.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Richard; two daughters, Linda Bullen of Mason and Karen Anderson of Franklin, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Nickolas, Christopher, Bryant, Amanda, and Alison, all of Mason; one brother, Charles (Pat) Kortes of Lakeview; one sister, Jean (Bob) Kissel of Greenville; her father and mother-in-law, Clarence and Dorothy Anderson; one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Nona Anderson, all of Stanton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Services were Oct. 31 at the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church. Arrangements were made by the Peters and Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Ledge First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
John Antico
John Antico, 74, of Charlotte died April 6, 1998, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Mr. Antico was born March 31, 1924 in Glassport, Pa., the son of Giovanni and Frances (Morabito) Antico. He was a professor of English at Lansing Community College for 25 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war, but was able to escape. He married Anna Mae Schaub in September 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae; two daughters, Carla Antico-Bumstead of Eaton Rapids and Mary Antico of Montreal, Canada; one son-in-law, Tony Bumstead of Eaton Rapids; one brother, Guy Cola of Florida; two sisters, Lucy Rosotti of Roseville and Rose Smith of Glassport, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. There will be a private family service at a later date. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lansing Public Library.
James E. Armstead
James E. Armstead, age 63, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, July 27, 1998, in Lansing. Jim was born Dec. 26, 1934, in Mishawaka, IN. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids and a member of the Brookfield Masonic Lodge #439. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Harold Armstead.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Barbara E.; daughter, Pam (Ken) Finegood of Huntington Woods; 2 sons, Michael Armstead of El Paso, TX, Doug Armstead of Charlotte; 5 grandchildren, Kevin, Eric, and Sarah Finegood, Elyshia Ann and Elijah Armstead; mother, Yetta Armstead of South Bend; 2 brothers, Bob (Debbie) Armstead of Edwardsburg, Ron (Vicki) Armstead of Lakeville, IN; a sister, Barbara (Larry) Crawford of South Bend, IN; several nieces, nephews, and special nieces, nephews, and special friend, Rick Ballentine.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 30, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Evans and Pastors Char and David Minger officiating.
Those desiring may make contributions to either the Robbins United Methodist Church Work Mission or the First United Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of James E. Armstead. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Lois M. Arndt
Lois M. Arndt, 76, of Grand Ledge died May 12, 1998, at her Oneida Township home.
Mrs. Arndt was born March 23, 1922, in Danby Township, the daughter of Harold and Bertha (Phillips) Dean. On May 8, 1942 she married Ernest L. Arndt. She was an Avon representative for 20 years.
She is survived by four sons, Harold (Dixie) Arndt of Charlotte, David (Doris) Arndt of Grand Ledge, Don Arndt of Vermontville and Robert Arndt of Grand Ledge; one daughter, Sandra Black of Wayne; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest.
Services were May 15 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with the Rev. Robert E. Betts officiating. Interment was in Danby Cemetery.
James L. Ashley
James L. Ashley, 74, formerly of Olivet, died April 17, 1998, in Lake City, Fla.
Mr. Ashley was born July 22, 1923 in Virginia, the son of Marion L. and Anna Lee Ashley. He grew up in Arkansas and Missouri. He served a short time in the Army. He married Ina G. Ashley in June of 1952, working for Binkies Construction. He also worked for the City of Olivet and retired from Olivet College after working there for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ina G. of Lake City, Fla., two daughters, Catherine Voss of Potterville, and Mary Barlett of Olivet; son, Jim Ashley of Battle Creek; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be May 7 at the Olivet First Assembly of God on Butterfield Highway.
