Harold Augst
Harold Augst, 88, of Sunfield died Jan. 24, 1998.
Mr. Augst was born Nov. 26, 1909, in Berlin Township. He was a life-long farmer and had been employed at TRW in Portland for 19 years, retiring in 1972.
He is survived by one stepdaughter, Judith (Charles) Olender of Fairfax, Va.; one son, John (Mary Ann) of Sunfield; four grandchildren; his aunt, Eileen Sutphen of Sunfield; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ellen McCormack.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, and one sister, Helen Williams.
Services were Jan. 27 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.

Walter M. Babcock
Walter M. Babcock, 76, of Charlotte died Feb. 26, 1998, at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Mr. Babcock was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Eaton Rapids, the son of Martin and Ruth (Brininstool) Babcock. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber of Jackson. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Charlotte, and VFW Post #1283, Eaton Rapids.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Vivian; one daughter, Debra (Kevin) Spitzley of Charlotte; four sons, Jon (Laura) Babcock of Independence, MO., and Brian (Joyce) Babcock, Harry (Lori) Babcock, and Bryon (Pam) Babcock, all of Lansing; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Louise) Babcock of Potterville; sister, Pauline Babcock of Bellevue; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were March 2 at the First Lutheran Church, Charlotte.

Daniel W. Backus
Daniel Wayne Backus, 41, of Charlotte died July 10, 1998.
Mr. Backus was born Aug. 19, 1956, in Charlotte, the son of Caryl and Patricia L. (George) Backus. He worked for General Motors Buick-Olds-Cadillac as an experimental engine assembler.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie; one sister, Anita (Thomas) Pepper of Jackson; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were July 13 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville.

Clyde Bahmer Jr.
Clyde Bahmer Jr., 71, of Olivet died Jan. 9, 1998, at the Trillium Hospital in Albion.
Mr. Bahmer was born June 15, 1926, the son of Clyde and Julia Bahmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a farmer all of his life and also worked for General Motors in Lansing for 43 years as a welder. Mr. Bahmer was a member of the United Auto Workers.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathy Johnson of Portland; four sons, Tim (Angie) of Charlotte, Tom (Amanda) of Olivet, Danny (Sandy) of Olivet, and Kevin (Cindy) of Marshall; 13 grandchildren; his mother, Julia Bahmer; one sister, May Brown of Lansing; and one brother, Dick Bahmer of Olivet.
Services were Jan. 13 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Milioni and the Rev. Tom Duff. Arrangements were made by Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels of Albion.
Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital or the Elk’s Crippled Children.
Edith G. Baker
Edith (Lightner) G. Baker, 91, of Battle Creek died Feb. 10, 1998, at the Battle Creek Health System/Community Site.
Mrs. Baker was born July 29, 1906, in Chester Township, daughter of Asa and Sylvania (Cobb) Lightner. She lived most of her life in Battle Creek. She attended County School and Charlotte High School. She was employed as a sales clerk at the downtown Battle Creek J.C. Penny Store for 19 years. She married Arno Greenman Oct. 2, 1925. Also, she married Earl Baker on June 29, 1974 in Augusta. She had a life membership in the VFW #7956.
She is survived by her brother, Harold Lightner of Battle Creek; one step-son, R. Bruce Baker of Augusta; one step-daughter, Shirley Weaver of Watertown, Tenn.; and several step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by two husbands, Arno Greenman and Earl Baker; her parents; one sister, Gena Benedict; and five brothers, Henry, Charles, Ralph, B.J., and Harry Lightner.
Services were Feb. 13 with the Rev. Steven Eggers officiating. Arrangements were made by Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek.

Mary E. Barendregt
Mary E. Barendregt, 93, of Springport died March 6, 1998 in Charlotte.
Mrs. Barendregt was born May 3, 1904 in Tiosa, Ind., the daughter of Henry Roudolph and Anna Rosella (Metzger) Hoover.
She is survived by one daughter, Vivian L. (Harold) Wardius of Florida; five sons, Lewis E. (Elsie) Love, Glen A. (Rose) Love, Donald E. Love, John H. (Mitch) Love all of Eaton Rapids, and Robert A. “Jack” (Sharon) Love of Springport; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Howard L. Hoover of Oregon, Glendon V. Hoover of Florida, and Ralph H. Hoover of Gulliver; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Naomi R. Jones.
Graveside services will be April 15 at the Springport Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Michael Barke
Michael Alan Barke, 16, of Lake Odessa formerly of Olivet, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1998. Mr. Barke was born Sept. 20, 1982 in Charlotte the youngest son of Edward and Terri (Blatt) Barke. He attended Olivet Public Schools through the eighth grade and attended high school in Lake Odessa. He enjoyed and was an avid wrestler and football athlete.
He is survived by his parents, mother, Terri Barke and Brian Correll of Charlotte and father, Edward Barke of Lake Odessa; sister, Melissa Blatt of Bellevue; brother, Matthew Barke of Lake Odessa; grandparents, Jean Barke of Allendale and Leah (Richard) Schofield of Charlotte; great-grandmother, Florabel Converse of Eaton Rapids; several aunts and uncles and cousins, including special aunt and uncle, Cindy and Raymond Davis.
Preceding him in death are his grandfathers, Howard “Red” Blatt and Ruben Barke, Sr.
Services were held Sept. 7 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Scott Brood of the Ainger Bible Church of Olivet officiating.

Glenn Barlond
Glenn Barlond, 84, of Charlotte died May 28, 1998 in Lansing.
Mr. Barlond was born Jan. 23, 1914 in Eaton County, the son of Everett G. and Zoa (Swift) Barlond. He had been employed by Dana (Atlas) Drop Forge in quality control for 25 years, retiring in 1972. He enjoys fishing, hunting, bowling, euchre, and traveling.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley McKellar and Karen Barlond, both of Lansing; one son, Everett (Jill) Barlond of Fife Lake; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Thelma Stadel of Bellevue and Genevieve Treadwell of Eaton Rapids; and one brother, Ray Barlond of Vermontville.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Alberta Parr.
Services were June 1 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in East Lawn Memory Gardens, Okemos.

Sally Barnhart
Sally Lea Barnhart, 56, died peacefully Dec. 6, 1998.
Mrs. Barnhart was born Sept. 24, 1942.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, Terry; two daughters, Susan (Phillip) Krill of Ill. and Meredith (Lee) Smith of Windsor Township; one son, William of Potterville; three grandchildren, Christy, Katie and Cassandra Krill; parents, Donald and Maxine Fedewa of Hastings; four sisters, Betty (Hank) Kaiser of Three Rivers, Peg (Joe) Oreskovich of Paw Paw, Linda (Larry) Palmer of Middleville and Maxine Krill of Otsego.
Services were held Dec. 9 at the Grosline-Runciman Company Lansing chapel with the Rev. John Byers, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary, officiating. Interment was in East Lawn Memory Gardens, Okemos.
