Edward Batterson
Edward P. Batterson, 48, of Bellevue, died Tuesday, October 27, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte. He was born December 9, 1949 in Battle Creek to Jesse and Violetta (Saxman) Batterson. He graduated from Pennfield High School in 1969 and was employed 29 years as an Engineering Technician at Eaton Corporation in Marshall. He married Roxie Maxwell, December 2, 1995, in Bellevue, she survives. Also surviving are former wife Sandra Inman of Bellevue, daughters, Heather (Tom) Morris, Renee Batterson of Bellevue; sons, Greg and Nick Winnie of Bellevue; sister, Charlotte (Mike) Hammond of Hastings; brothers, Tim (Linda) Batterson and Todd Batterson of Battle Creek; and two grandchildren. He was a member of the Cereal City Cyclists Motorcycle Club and hauled the “Chuck Wagon” (portable roaster for pig roasts) to club events. He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club at Eaton Corp and was actively involved in Eaton County 4-H. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, and spending time with his kids and grandchildren. Services was held 11:00 a.m., Friday at Shaw Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in Bell Cemetery, Assyria Township, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made to the Eaton County 4-H.
Mary M. Battin
Mary M. (Kirchmeier) Battin, 47, of Denison, Texas, formerly of Charlotte died Jan. 16, 1998.
Mrs. Battin was born Oct. 20, 1950, in Lansing, the daughter of George and Patricia Kirchmeier.
She is survived by one daughter, Heather (Rick) Steinhauer, of Charlotte; one son, Marcus, of Charlotte; four grandchildren; her parents, Patricia and George Kirchmeier; two sisters, Janean (Ted) Bumbaugh of Lansing and Kathleen (Jim) Sandusky of Albion; two brothers, Kevin of Arizona and Patrick of Charlotte; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ernie Shawadlenak of Denison, Texas, Linda, Jan, and others from Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Debra Sue.
Services were Jan. 21 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Pastor Larry Sandusky officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Francis Baum
Francis L. “Vern” Baum, 71, of Charlotte, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Ingham Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Baum was born April 15, 1927 in Albion, the son of Daniel Leroy and Goldi B. (Gettys) Baum. He married Nettie M. Lee Oct. 21, 1950 and worked as a foreman for the Eaton County Road Commission, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of the American Legion, Charlotte Post #42 and the Eagles.
He is survived by three sons, Harold L. Baum of Mason, Rex D. (Loraine) Baum and David A. (Judi) Baum, both of Charlotte; three daughters, Diane L. (Charles) Cutting, Joyce E. (Stewart) Taylor, both of Charlotte, Denise L. Pfiester of Bellevue; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, James Baum of Charlotte; and one sister, Betty Danku of Battle Creek.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie in 1988 and a daughter, Debra F. in 1965.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Scott Brood officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamlin Township. Visitation will be Saturday and Sunday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.
Doris M. Beadle
Doris M. Beadle, 76, of Battle Creek died Feb. 22, 1998, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Beadle was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Lansing, the daughter of Harmon and Ella Mae (Crandell) Saylor. She graduated in 1940 from Potterville High School. She was a member of Hastings P.T.A., volunteer at the Community Hospital in Battle Creek, Cub Scout Den Mother and Campfire Leader, member of the Community Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Chapel Hill Methodist Church in Battle Creek. She retired from Sears, working in Hastings and Battle Creek.
She is survived by daughter, Nancy Siddall of Battle Creek; two sons, William Sherman and Michael Sherman both of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
Services were Feb. 25 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dave Morton officiating. Interment was in Benton Twp. Cemetery, Eaton County. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Mary Elizabeth (Cole) Beard
Mary Elizabeth (Cole) Beard, age 84, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at her residence following a long illness. She was born June 7, 1913 in Lansing, the daughter of William and Alice (O’Connor) Thompson. Mary was a retired Fisher Body employee in Lansing and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church and Alter Society in Eaton Rapids. Mary married Fred W. Cole in 1935 and had 2 children, William P. Cole and Patricia Ann Cole. Mary’s parents and daughter passed away in 1953 and her husband of 21 years died in 1957. In 1959 she met and married Edgar E. Beard who passed away 1 month before their 35th wedding anniversary on May 4, 1994. Mary’s brother Fergus Thompson died in 1991.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, William P. and Norma Cole of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Shannon Cole, Fred Cole, Kim Faggion, Lori Wiborn, Tami Byer and Scott Kirkland; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Rose Upton and brother, William Thompson; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated on May 30, 1998 at St. Peter Church with the Rev. Fr. Bennett Constantine as celebrant. Rosary was recited on Friday evening at the Skinner Funeral Home. Burial was at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Lansing. Casket bearers were Dallas Strong, Scott Phillips, Ronnie Beard, Norman Beard, Larry Beard and Doug Beard. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to either the Barry-Eaton Visiting Nurses, the Eaton Community Hospice of the St. Peter Church in memory of Mary E. (Cole) Beard.
Ruby G. Beaudin
Ruby G. (Ward) Banta Beaudin, 91, of Battle Creek died Dec. 28, 1997, at the Battle Creek Health System.
Mrs. Banta Beaudin was born Sept. 16, 1906, in Vermontville Township, the daughter of Worth and Catherine (Green) Ward. She came to this area in 1928 from Lansing. She was a 1928 graduate of Charlotte High School and attended Lansing Business College. She was employed by Kellogg’s in the 1930s and worked in both City Finance and Lakeview Finance, retiring from Lakeview in 1956. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and its Ruth Circle and a former member of the VFW Chapter #565 Auxiliary and T.O.P.S. She married Carl Banta Sept. 16, 1928, in Battle Creek, and Nelson Beaudin Sept. 29, 1984, in Battle Creek.
She is survived by her second husband, Nelson; two sisters, Myrtle Stillwell of Kalamazoo and Alice Conrad of Charlotte; and two nieces, Sue Hardy of Kalamazoo and Mary Williams of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Carl.
Services were Dec. 31 at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, Battle Creek, with the Rev. David Dryer officiating.

Edith Benedict
Edith Ella (Van Blarcom) Benedict, 84, of Vermontville passed away at her residence Nov. 25, 1998, surrounded by her family, after a battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Sunfield, daughter of Guy and Bertha (Gorham) Van Blarcom. She was married to Harold Benedict for 64 years and lived on the family farm north of Vermontville. She had eight children; 26 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Edith attended the Vermontville United Methodist Church, where she was mission chairman for many years. She also attended and loved the Bismark United Methodist Church and the Sunfield Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed membership in many clubs including the Vermontville Women’s Club and Eaton County Women’s Club Federation, Eaton County Farm Bureau Women, Bismark Farm Bureau Community Group, and the Bismark Community Boosters. She was an officer in many of these groups. Edith enjoyed farm and garden work, lawn care, antiques, reading, and worldwide travel, but most of all the company of friends and family. As she thought about the prospect of death she “worried about all the books she’d never get read, all the places she’d never see, all the grandchildren she’d never get to love.” She was interested in mission, concerned about the world’s hungry, homeless, helpless, hopeless “and didn’t know what to do about it, and she was sorry about that.” She could hardly bear the senselessness of war and felt so lucky that Harold and her sons never had to go.
She is survived by her husband, Harold, and their children, Bruce (Eunice) Benedict, Merial (Dr. Sunil) Das, Mary Jo (Robert) Brimmer, Iris (Leroy) Wion, Cherry Adams, Karen (David) Rishel, Brian (Lorraine) Benedict, and Brenda (Mitch) Gillons; siblings, Zelna Rose, Mabel Booher, Claude (Alice) Van Blarcom, and Josephine Cates; brother-in-law, Carrol (Barbara) Benedict; sister-in-law, Theresa Van Blarcom; 26 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Van Blarcom; sister, Glenna Coleman and her husband Rolland; sister-in-law, Helen Steward and her husband Evert; brothers-in-law, Leon Rose, Kenneth Cates, Russel Booher, and Albert Jones; son-in-law, Fred Adams; and grandchildren, Mari Helen and Robert Harold Brimmer.
Services were Nov. 28 at the Sunfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Bowman of the Vermontville United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at the Freemire Cemetery, Sunfield Township. Arrangements were handled by the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield. Pallbearers were Dilip Das, Terry Benedict, Tim Wion, Tom Wion, Derek Rishel, Erik Rishel, Cinque Adams, and Quannah Adams. Contributions may be made to the Vermontville United Methodist Missions, Maple Valley Scholarship Foundation, or the Bismark Community Boosters.
Earl S. Benn
Earl S. Benn, 82, of Mulliken died March 29, 1998 at St. Lawrence Dimondale Center.
Mr. Benn was born Aug. 22, 1915 in Jackson County, the son of Golden H. and Annie R. (King) Benn. He was a retired year foreman at the Lumber Yard in Traverse City.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; two stepdaughters, Marlene (Harry) Smith of Charlotte and Pam (Doug) Lilly of Grand Ledge; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Been of S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lelia.
Private services were held. Burial was in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken. Arrangements were made by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.
Harley Eugene Bennett
Harley Eugene Bennett, 74, of Charlotte, died June 24, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Bennett was born June 26, 1923, in Charlotte, the son of Roy C. and Blance M. (King) Bennett/McManus. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and worked as Salvage Department Manager for Wilcox Gay and retired from Charlotte Chair Factory. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and had enjoyed model railroading, airplane modeling, painting and playing the guitar.
He is survived by sister Alta Christenson of Charlotte; brother, Richard McManus of Charlotte; and two nephews, Galen (Dawn) Christenson of Vermontville and James Charles (Darlene) McManus of Cloverdale.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 27, at Pray Funeral Home, with the Rev. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
