Mary Hosey
Mary Hosey, 92, of Vermontville, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, at Country Living Adult Foster Care.
Mrs. Hosey was born March 23, 1906 in Eaton County, the daughter of Ira and Vera (Rolfe) Halsey.
She is survived by three daughters, Ardella (George) Hall of Higgins Lake, Wilma (Glenn) Powers of Vermontville, and Mary Lou (Douglas) Faust of Charlotte; two sons, Melvin (Harlean) of Coopersville, and William (Marilyn) of Vermontville; one daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hosey of Nashville; six sisters, Luella Wonser of Eaton Rapids, Edith Hutchison, Vera Bracy, Ola Burnett, Ila Burnett all of Charlotte, and Gladys Thomas of North Carolina; three brothers, Floyd Halsey of Charlotte, Robert Halsey of Nashville, and Harold Halsey of Florida; 25 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Melvin Hosey in 1964; one daughter, Audra Reynolds; and one son, Roger Hosey.
Services were Sept. 14 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice.
Norma Housler
Norma Maxine Housler, 90, of Charlotte, died Oct. 9, 1998, at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital.
Maxine was born in Chester Township, the daughter of William and Edith (Green) Schrader. She was a farmer’s wife and a loving mother and grandmother. She was a lifelong member of Gresham United Methodist Church. She was a well-loved and highly respected teacher for 30 years teaching in various country schools including the Morse and Valley Schools and the Maple Valley School System. After retirement she worked at the Tot Spot and was fondly referred to as Grandma Maxine. Recently Maxine celebrated her 90th birthday with an open house at the farm. She enjoyed seeing friends and family at the gathering.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon (Larry) Adams of Charlotte, Rebecca Hunt of Kalamazoo, and Connie (Rex) Francis of Kentwood; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon in 1995; and a brother, Bernard Schrader.
Services were held Oct. 12 at Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gresham United Methodist Church.
Kathryn Howard
Kathryn Laura Lehman Howard, 86, of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 21, 1998.
Mrs. Howard was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Charlotte, the daughter of Henry and Myrtie Lehman. She moved to Gainesville from Charlotte to be near her family, but always wanted to return to Michigan. She was lovingly called Gramma Cake.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley (Marc) Edelstein; two grandsons, Bill (Michelle) Edelstein and Him Goodrich; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Susanna Goodrich; two nieces, Diane Corrigan of Lansing and Sally Holmes of Charlotte; and one nephew, David Michael of Dimondale.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Charles Howard.
Services were Dec. 24 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Joel O. Hummel
Joel O. Hummel, 84, of Vermontville died Feb. 4, 1998, at Tendercare of Hastings.
Mr. Hummel was born April 15, 1913, in Kalamazoo, the son of Earl and Lillie Ann (Sievers) Hummel. He was raised by his grandparents, James and Mary Ann Hummel, and was a lifelong resident of the Nashville and Kalamo areas. He planted trees in northern Michigan in the 1930s as part of the Civil Conservation Corps. He was also employed at Lentz Table Co. of Nashville, Piston Ring Co. of Hastings. and retired from Post Cereals, Battle Creek in 1975 after 23 years of service. He was a member of the Nashville Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years following in his grandfather’s (James Hummel) footsteps. He was a lifetime member of the National Trappers’ Assoc., Southern Michigan Trappers’ Assoc., Upper Manistee River Assoc., and Bear Lake Township Improvement Assoc.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys (Perkins) Hummel; two daughters, Mary (Bob) Wood of Nashville and Bonnie (Bob) Hanford of Hastings; two sons, Marvin (Gloria) of Grand Ledge and Jim (Mary Ann) of Nashville; two stepchildren, Jim Perkins of Nashville and Janice Bayha of Vermontville; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vada Mix of Nashville, Audrey Wynne of Florida, and Beatrice Galliday of Kalamazoo; and three brothers, Robert of Vermontville, Martin of Hesperia, and Earl of Paw Paw.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Clara Belle; one grandson, Wesley Wood; and two sisters, Jennie Henry and Geneva Whitt.
Services were Feb. 7 at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville Fire Department.
Helen D. “Dottie” Hunt
Helen D. “Dottie” Hunt, age 87 of Eaton Rapids died Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. She was born February 23, 1911 in Lansing the daughter of Augustus and Viamette (Barbour) Montaven. Mrs. Hunt was a retired sales clerk for Knapps in Lansing and was a former school bus driver for both Eaton Rapids and Grand Ledge.
Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Donald “Bud” Hunt of Eaton Rapids; 5 children, Arlen (Phyllis) Ward of St. Joseph, MI, Sharon Shulick of Union Lake, MI, Annette Dutton of Indianapolis, IN, Karen Dunkel of Dimondale and Susie (Jeff) Morey of Westphalia; 12 grandchildren, Mike Ward, Debbie Gabrick, Dianna Wright, Sherri Kemp, Anne Shulick, Kevin Dutton, Brian Dutton, Martin Smith, David Smith, Trina Sperry, Todd Morey, and Greg Morey; 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 8, 1998 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Paul L. Hasselbring, Vicar of the Faith in Christ Lutheran Church in Eaton Rapids officiating. Graveside services followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were grandsons, Martin Smith, David Smith, Todd Morey, Greg Morey, Kevin Dutton and Brian Dutton. Christopher M. Huser
Christopher Michael Huser, 25, of Naperville, Ill., died Aug. 7, 1998.
He was born in Perth Amboy, N.J., Nov. 16, 1982, the son of Klaus and Diane (Binns) Huser. He was employed by Lyon Metal in Aurora, Ill., and married Christine Beerbower Dec. 30, 1995.
He is survived by his wife, Christine K. Huser of Naperville, Ill.; parents, Klaus and Diane Huser of Ypsilanti; in-laws, Norman and Janet Beerbower of Kalamazoo; sister-in-law, Andrea Beerbower; and grandparents, Leona and Dale Binns of Mulliken and Ruth Huser of Dortmund, Germany.
Services were Aug. 11 at the Sunfield United Brethren Church, with the Rev. Kevin Cherry officiating. Interment was in the South Portage Cemetery, Portage.
Arrangements were made by Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.
Nancy Jane Hyde
Nancy Jane Hyde, 81, of Charlotte died June 16, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
Mrs. Hyde was preceded in death by her husband, Francis.
She was the daughter of William and Susan (Wargo) Aubrey. She was formerly a teacher in the Rural School System and involved in local bowling leagues for many years. She enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening and camping.
She is survived by two daughters, Pat (Glenn) Briggs of Charlotte and Anita (Rodney) Rodgers of Gwinn; two sons, Steve Hyde of Springport and Michael Hyde of Tulsa, Okla.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Sue (Sheba) Haight of Higgins Lake; and brother-in-law, Orville Hyde of Byron Center.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 20, 1998, at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in West Carmel Cemetery.
Harry T. Idle
Harry Thomas Idle, 72, of East Lansing, formerly of Independence Village, died Aug. 6, 1998, at the Ingham Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Idle was born in Pen Argyl, PA, the son of the Rev. H. Franklin and Alice (Lobb) Idle. He graduated from Georgetown University. He was a member of the Charlotte Lions club, was a reader for the Radio Talking Book program at WKAR Radio, and was a volunteer at the Ingham Regional Medical Center Gift Shop. He had been employed as an auditor for the U.S. government.
He is survived by two stepbrothers, Max Hamilton of Portage, and Vance Hamilton of Holt; several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Gyger; and two brothers, Jerry Idle and John Idle.
Services will be Sunday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Ingham Regional Medical Center or the WKAR Radio Talking Book program.
Philip Ritter Jenkins
Philip Ritter Jenkins, of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, September 1, 1998 after a brief illness. He was born November 29, 1926 in Berryville, VA, the son of Mary Virginia Smithey and Clarence Ritter Jenkins. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. Philip was very proud of his career as a professional engineer. He traveled widely as a demolition expert for Hercules Powder Corp. Mr. Jenkins was a building contractor for the State of Michigan Secondary complex and was also employed by the Lansing Housing Commission as a maintenance supervisor. Upon retirement, he served as Deputy Drain Commissioner for Ingham County. His interests included gourmet cooking, carpentry, antiques, and gardening at his farm. Philip was an avid reader who loved books.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 24 plus years, Manuela; 4 children, Philip Ritter, Jr., Paul Richard, Jane Marie and Catherine; several grandchildren and 1 sister, Virginia Jane Davison of Jacksonville, FL. He will be sadly missed by his longtime friend, Herbert Wolfe.
Burial services were private. Visitation for family and friends were held Thursday, September 3, 1998, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Public Library, 200 S. Main, in memory of Philip Ritter Jenkins.
