James H. Mason
James H. Mason, age 74, of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, May 23, 1998 at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. He was born April 27, 1924 in Chester, MI, the son of Orrin and Jessie (Chapman) Mason. Jim was a Navy veteran of World War II, a 50-year member of the American Legion Harold Teeter Post #15 Eaton Rapids, and a member of the 40/8 Voiture #1332 Eaton Rapids. Jim was a retired Repairman in the Piston Rod Assembly for General Motors in Lansing, a member of the Quarter Century Club and a member of the U.A.W. Local #652 in Lansing. Jim was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and especially fishing. Preceding him in death are his parents; 2 brothers, Cortland and Leon and 2 sisters, Edna Mason and Marjorie Puffenberger.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Elaine; daughter, Sandra Mason of Eaton Rapids; adopted granddaughter, Lucida (Chris) Staszuk and their boys, Ryan and Ross all of Eaton Rapids; brother, Russell (Maxine) Mason of Eaton Rapids; 2 sisters, Dorothy (Paul) Swan of Eaton Rapids and Esther (Dale) Koch of Homer; several nieces and nephews; extended family, Albert and Carole, Todd and Lisa, Chan and Bobby Jo Clark, Beverly DeLoach and families.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, May 27, 1998 at 2:30 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Larry Nallett of the Eagle United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside military services will be provided by the American Legion Post #15 at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital in memory of James H. Mason.
Marlin B. Masters
Marlin B. Masters, 79, of Charlotte died April 29, 1998 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing after an extended illness.
Mr. Masters was born in Leslie, the son of Charlie and Anna (Jeffers) Masters. He had been a Charlotte resident since 1927. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He had been employed at the Wilcox-Gay Corp., the Michigan Magnetics Co., Krown Camper Co., and Masterbilt Products Co., Olivet from where he retired. He was married to Mary A. Eggleston on June 1, 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Randy (Julie) Masters of Lansing and Kim (Mary) Masters of Kentwood; one daughter, Karen Masters Burns of Lansing; five grandchildren; one brother, Lysle (Zella) Masters of Charlotte; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Masters of Olivet.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Masters; and one sister, Eythel Black.
Services were May 2 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte with the Rev. Clark A. Hock officiating. Interment was at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Dorothy I. Matz
Dorothy I. Matz, age 75, of Holt, died Friday afternoon, October 23, 1998 at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. Mrs. Matz was born March 2, 1923 in Lenapah, Oklahoma, a daughter of E.E. and Minnie (Thorpe) Young. She was an Army veteran of World War II, retired accountant for the State, a member of the Haflinger Association and the State Employees Retirees Association. Mrs. Matz was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, and her son, George Cole.
Surviving are her daughter, Zola (Ronald) Sipes of Holt; daughter-in-law, Cora Cole of Virginia Beach, VA; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Rev. John A. Toth of the First Presbyterian Church of Dimondale officiating. Interment will be in Dimondale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
James N. Maxey
James N. Maxey, 68, of Eaton Rapids died March 3, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Maxey was born May 1, 1929, in Manitowoc, Wis., the son of James and Florence (Kapitan) Maxey. He was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, and Eaton Rapids Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM. He was past treasurer for the Michigan Angus Association and a member of the American Angus Association. He and his wife owned and operated Evergreen Angus Farms for 45 years and he retired from General Motors in 1987 after 37 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Clarabelle; two daughters, Sarah (Mark) Belokonny of Brush Plane, Wash. and Jane Maxey of Lansing; and three grandchildren.
Services were March 7 at the Robbins United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Marty Debow officiating. Interment was in the Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Robbins United Methodist Church or Eaton Rapids Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM.
David C. May
David C. May, 71, of Seguin, Texas, formerly of Eaton County, passed away June 26 in Seguin.
Mr. May was born April 23, 1927, in Guilford County, NC, to Guy and Lois May. He had been a resident of Seguin for the last four years. Previously, he had been a farmer in Eaton County and had retired as a captain from the Lansing Fire Department after 27 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a long-time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Steven May.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne; son, David (Sue) May of corpus Christi; brothers, Guy (Jean) May, Lewis (Edna) May and Bill (Brenda) May, all of Greensboro, NC, and John May of Kent, Wash.; sisters, Sue Tillman and Betty (John) Waters, both of Greensboro, NC, and Ruth (Fred) Brady of Mebane, NC.
A memorial service was June 29 in the Goetz Memorial Chapel, Seguin, Texas. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one’s choice, in lieu of flowers.
Vivan Wright Rolfe Meeder
Vivan Wright Rolfe Meeder, age 89, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 1998 at the Eaton Co. Medical Care Facility. Vivan was born February 16, 1909 at Chester, Eaton Co., MI. She was a descendant of two Eaton Co. pioneer families, James Wright and Helen Augusta Hubbard. She was one of twelve children born to Fredrick Thomas Wright and Emma Ann Zimmerman. Her family consisted of brothers, Elgin, James, Fred and Ronald Wright; sisters, Leone Sweet, Beatrice Chapman, Helen Beals, Eunice Sweatland, Violet Shaver, all deceased. One sister, Catherine Brown of Charlotte survives. She had been married 25 years to Edward Meeder who dies in 1988 and they spent many happy years together at Drummond Island, Florida, Potterville and Dutton. She had spent the last ten years in Eaton Rapids. Vivan was a busy, energetic person, full of fun and always enjoyed company. She had worked in the Potterville Post Office, Wilcox-Guay and Eaton Co. Medical Care Facility.
She leaves a son, Dorr “Bud” (Betty) Rolfe of Eaton Rapids and their children, Cindy (Terry) Smith of Narrow Lake, Trudy Stoken of Eaton Rapids, Aaron (Casey) Rolfe of Lowell; a daughter, Doreen Lowe of Lansing; 2 deceased granddaughters, Arnea and Shereen Serrells; 11 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; step children, Jack (Arlene) Meeder of Mancelona, John (Ann) Meeder of Bellaire, Ann (Carl) Burley of Florida; many nephews and nieces one of whom was a special comfort, Doris (Tom) Moran of Eaton Rapids.
At her request cremation had taken place and due to family illness, graveside services at Rosehilll Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville United Methodist Church or the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital in memory of Vivan Meeder. Constance Lee Meredith (Hummel)
Constance Lee Meredith (Hummel) was born on September 5, 1937, and died June 14, 1998.
She was a nurse practitioner for the Women’s Health Center. She also taught and competed in Ballroom Dancing for many years. She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Hummel, and brother Larry Hummel.
She is survived by her mother, Iceal Hummel; sisters, Elaine O’Connor, Kay (John) Lovell, Linda (A.J.) Monroe, Cindy Johnson; 4 beloved grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Gorsline Runciman Lansing Chapel on Wednesday, June 17, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Thursday, June 18, from 2-4 p.m. Funeral services will be held on June 18, 1998, at 7:00 p.m.
Nellie Mesarik
Nellie Mesarik, 86, formerly of Leoni Township died Nov. 24, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Betty Whitaker in Charlotte.
Mrs. Mesarik was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #612 Ladies Auxiliary and Women of the Moose. She was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.
In addition to Whitaker, she is survived by two daughters, Darlene (Eulin) Eastridge of Arizona and Joann Fracker of Tecumseh; one son, Bob (Rita) King of Indiana; 30 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, one grandson, Douglas Fracker, and one granddaughter, Jenny Stetler.
Services were Nov. 27 at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Michigan Center. Interment was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home, Michigan Center.
