Letha Savage
Letha L. Savage, 83, of Mulliken, died Nov. 3, 1998 at a Lansing hospital.
Mrs. Savage was born May 18, 1915 in Danby Township, a daughter of George and Nora (Ferris) Lunn. She married Phil Savage on Oct. 25, 1936 in Grand Ledge.
She is survived by two sons, Theo (Laurie) Savage and Bruce (Carmella) Savage, both of Mulliken; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother, Leo Lunn of East Lansing; and her aunt, Ella Musson of Cheboygan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Phil, in 1996; and a sister, Erma Bacon, in 1989.
Services were held Nov. 5 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery.
Loren W. Sayer
Loren W. Sayer, 67, of Sunfield passed away May 22, 1998 at his home in Lake Odessa.
Mr. Sayer was born February 26, 1931 at home in Sunfield, the son of Layton, L. and Lula Irene (Cheal) Sayer. He spent four years in the United States Air Force, one of those years in Africa. He farmed with his father, and then bought a farm on Eaton Highway, Sunfield.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Claryce; one son, David (Sue Ann) Sayer of Sunfield; two daughters, Linda (Tony) Childs of Grand Ledge, and Dorene Barnum of Hastings; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his father, Layton Sayer; brother, Dean (Margaret) Sayer; two nieces; and aunt, Ila Cheal; many cousins; and special friends, Gary and Cathy Borsons of Ohio, Steve and Ruby Stevenson of El Paso, Texas, and Bill and Pat Rogers of Washington State; plus many other friends and good neighbors. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lula; and one son, Larry Sr.
Services were May 26 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Reverend Hoekwater. Interment was in the East Sebewa Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Co. Hospice or the Sunfield Area Sponsors of Programs for Youth Scholarship Fund.
May B. Sexton
May B. Sexton of Elberton, Georgia, formerly of Eaton Rapids and Haslett, age 78, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998 at her residence. May was born March 26, 1920 in Ft. Seybert, West Virginia the daughter of John C. and Verdie L. (Roadcap) Branner. She was retired from the State of Michigan Department of Treasury and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in East Lansing. She also was a housemother at the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids between 1954 and 1966. She is preceded in death by a brother, James Branner and sister, Annie Reese.
Surviving are five children, John (Susan) Sexton of Elberton, GA, Kay McGarry of Eaton Rapids, Barbara Ann (Steve) Ross of Louisville, KY, Marie (Bill) Howe of Bath and Christina Hope (David) Bellows of Weidman, MI; ten grandchildren, Johnny Sexton of Elberton, GA, Sandy (Kurt) Griffin of Louisville, KY, Susan (Donald) Short of Louisville, KY, John (Heidi) McGarry of Eaton Rapids, Steven (Karie) McGarry of Vancouver, WA, Ann (Mark) Griffith of Onondaga, James (Michelle) Robert McGarry of Eaton Rapids, Philip McGarry of Olivet, Timothy H. Howe of Alpharetta, GA, and Christopher J. Howe of Alto, MI; fifteen great-grandchildren, Kaylee Griffin, Athena and Nathan Short, Molley and Megan McGarry, Kelsy, Sean and Alex McGarry, Thomas and Alan Griffith, Salli, Michael and Elizabeth McGarry, Jacob and Meredith Howe; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 11th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Bishop Richard Holcomb of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiated.
John H. Shaffer
John H. Shaffer, 83, of Olivet and Palmetto, Fla., died Jan. 31, 1998 in the Palmetto Guest Home.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Bellevue and has lived in the Charlotte and Olivet areas all his life. He was a 1930 graduate of Charlotte High School and worked for Michigan Bell Telephone for 30 years. He served on the board of education for the Olivet Public Schools, was a trustee of the Olivet Congregational Church, and a long-time member of the Olivet Lions Club. He had wintered in Manatee County, Fla., since 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; three daughters, Ann Wade of Okemos, Jean Blair of Baltimore, MD, and Julia Corneil of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held in Olivet at a later date.

Rev. Clarence J. Shaver
The Rev. Clarence Joseph Shaver, 90, of Charlotte died Jan. 31, 1998.
Mr. Shaver was born May 14, 1907, in Charlotte, the son of Orville and Bessie (Perry) Shaver. He was married to Harriet Rauch from 1930 until their divorce. In 1939, he married Lola Belle Richardson, who died in 1981. He was then married to Ethel King from 1981 until her death in 1993. He served in the Army National Guard’s 119th Field Artillery and was a pastor in churches in Charlotte, Lansing, Coldwater, and in Indiana and Ohio. He was employed at Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte for several years until his retirement. Following retirement, he purchased the Morrel Country Stove north of Charlotte, operating it until the 1970s. He was active in the Charlotte Area Senior Citizens organizations, for which he received the Governor’s Award in 1981 for Outstanding Service. He was also a life member of the 119th FA Veterans’ Association in Lansing.
He is survived by two sisters, Cordie (Henry) Felder of East Tawas and Hazel Lasky of Jackson and one brother, Merlin (June) of Marshall.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Marcus in 1939, and Kenneth and Orville, both in 1996, and two sisters, Edna in 1919 and Glenna Baker in 1987.
Services were Feb. 3 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Richard Mitterling officiating. Interment was in the Mason Cemetery, Coldwater.
Melvin Shaver
Melvin E. Shaver, 74, of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., formerly of Kalamo, died Aug. 23, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Shaver was born in Charlotte. He was a retired home builder, a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, director of the Lake Panasoffkee Water Association, past president of Lake Panasoffkee Library Association, life member of Kalamo Masonic Temple, and member of the American Legion, Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; one daughter, Penny Rosenburg of Lake Panasoffkee; one son, Dennis of Lansing; one sister, Gerry Martenies of Michigan; three brothers, Ralph and Neil both of Lansing, and Duane of Arkansas; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place.
Ruth Shepard
Ruth Shepard, 91, of Charlotte died Dec. 26, 1997.
Mrs. Shepard was born Oct. 5, 1906, in Charlotte, the daughter of William and Bessie (Brace) Dodgson. She taught school in Rural Eaton County and Charlotte Public Schools, from which she retired in 1970. She had been a member of the Michigan Centennial Farms Association, Vermontville Historical Society, and Lawrence Avenue Methodist Church, Charlotte.
She is survived by her two daughters, Dorothy (Quentin) Bosworth of Charlotte and Phyllis (Matthew) Spiro of Fort Thomas, Ken.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; one granddaughter, and one great-grandson.
Services were Dec. 31 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Flemming officiating. Interment was in the Kalamo Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Emma Liddie Sherman
Emma Liddie Sherman, age 90, of Eaton Rapids went to be with the Lord from her residence on Monday, November 9, 1998. She was born August 9, 1908 in Lansing the daughter of Claude and Emma (Tonney) Lenon. Mrs. Sherman was preceded in death by her husband William in 1977.
Surviving are 4 daughters and one son, Violet (Dennis) Fox of Alpena, Lula Belle Croy of Ionia, Louise (Albert) Burk of Eaton Rapids, William (Neitta) Sherman of Leslie and Thelma Fox of Potterville; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Irene (George) Post of Trufront, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 11th, at 2 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Okemos. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. For those desiring, a memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in memory of Emma L. Sherman.
Mildred A. Shrontz
Mildred A. Shrontz, 92, of Olivet died July 7, 1998, at the Country Living Adult Foster Care Home where she had resided for more than two years.
Mrs. Shrontz was born Nov. 20, 1905, in Clarence Township, Calhoun County, the daughter of Miles F. and Mina (Lamb) Hooper. She was a lifelong area resident. She married Clair M. Shrontz on Dec. 17, 1924. She was a member of the Brookfield United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Olivet Rebekah Lodge.
She is survived by three sons, Miles (Myrna) Shrontz of Coral Springs, Fla., Dean (Esther) Shrontz of Olivet and Darrel (Suzie) Shrontz of Elgin, Ill.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Genevieve (Lawrence) Perry of Charlotte and Dorothy Mitchell of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clair; one brother, Rowland Hooper; and three sisters, Bethel Imes, Ruth Sherman and Lois Carpenter.
Services were July 21 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Winford Collins officiating. Interment was in Clarence Center Cemetery, Clarence Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brookfield United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
