Daniel Steven Coats Jr.
Daniel Steven Coats Jr., age 21, life resident of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, November 18, 1998 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born August 25, 1977 in Eaton Rapids the son of Daniel and Gail (Bartlett) Coats Sr. Dan was a construction worker for Designer Built Homes in Eaton Rapids and formerly employed with Mitch Towns Contracting. Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on trucks and cars.
Surviving are his soul mate, Becky Gibbs of Eaton Rapids; parents, mother, Gail Turner of Eaton Rapids; father, Dan Coats and Cheryl Hector of Eaton Rapids; brother, Kyle Curtis Turner of Eaton Rapids; grandparents, Donald and Irene Coats Sr. of Eaton Rapids and Doris Eaton of Mason; aunts and uncles, Donald Coats JR. of Onondaga, Diana Wait of Eaton Rapids, Kristine and Doug Koivu of Mason, Bradley Bartlett of Florida, Brian and Penny Bartlett of Morris and Lisa Southerling of Lansing; several other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 21, 1998 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Steven Klink officiating. Graveside services followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring a memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Daniel S. Coats Jr.
Vance A. Cole
Vance A. Cole, 77, of Charlotte died Aug. 13, 1998, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, after an extended illness.
Mr. Cole was born in Walton Twp., Eaton County, the son of Blake and Maple (Porter) Cole and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident. He was a lifelong farmer and had driven school bus for both the Charlotte and Maple Valley schools and was a former 4-H leader for the Chester Champions 4-H Club. He was married to Dolores (Wheaton) Cole in 1941.
He is survived by four daughters, Denise (William) Fennell of Olivet, Linette (David) Betts of Charlotte, Nadine (Dan) Rood of Saline and Corrine (Rod) McMillon of Vermontville; one son, Gerald (Paula) Cole of Charlotte; one brother, Robert (Phyllis) Cole of Olivet; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 27, 1990.
Services were held Aug. 15 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. John Baumgartner officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery.

Gordon M. Colles
Gordon W. Colles, 75, of Bellevue, died Wednesday, June 10, at Battle Creek Health System.
He was born Sept. 26, 1922, in Kalamazoo to Phillip M. and Esther (Newton) Colles. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He was employed as an equipment operator at Post Cereal for 41 years. He retired Feb. 1, 1983.
He married Doris M. Jones; she survives. Also surviving are son, Gary W. Colles of Charlotte; daughter, Linda L. Witt of Gobles; three grandchildren; half-sister, Mary Brandli of Delton; and stepmother, Mary Colles of Battle Creek.
He was a member of Bellevue United Methodist Church, Eaton County Amateur Radio Club, Post 25 Year Club and American Legion Post 225 in Charlotte. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, and camping and amateur radio.
Services were Saturday at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

E. LeGrande “Lee” Collier
E. LeGrande “Lee” Collier, 85, of Jonesboro, Tenn., formerly of Nashville, Mich., died July 10, 1998, in Northside Hospital, Tenn.
Mr. Collier was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Sunfield, the son of Charles and Grace (Lovell) Collier. He graduated from Sunfield High School and married Ola Cruttenden in 1941. The marriage ended in divorce. He married Evelyn Fox-Landon in 1977. He worked in farming and carpentry and retired in 1977 from the old Grand Rapids Bookcase & Chair Co. Mr. Collier also served as sexton of the Freeport Cemetery.
He is survived by two sons, Loren Collier of Charlotte, and Raymond Collier of Houston, Texas; daughter, Jeralee MacKenzie of Jonesboro, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepsons, three stepdaughters; two sisters, Van Loa Childs of Vermontville, and France Sebolt of Albion; and best friend, Maggie Jones of Jonesboro, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Evelyn.
Services were July 15 at the Freeport Cemetery, Tenn., with the Rev. Randall K. Hartman officiating. Arrangements were made by Wren Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Barry Community Hospice.
Alberta M. Conant
Alberta May Conant, 85, of Charlotte, died Sept. 24, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Mrs. Conant was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Charlotte, the daughter of George and Estella (Barnes) Paine. She was a clerk at the A&P between 1946-55; for former Brookfield Township clerk; and a member of the Nazarene Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Ann Gordon of Gilbert, S.C., and Corol McCallum of Charlotte; one son, Clarence (Ruth) Conant of Springport; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Zimmerman of Pleasant Lake; and one sister-in-law, Lucretia Paine of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude; one sister, Bethel Conant; and one brother, Carl Paine.
Services were Sept. 28 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Duane Royston officiating. Interment was in the Clarence Center Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Matilda Corbin
Matilda “Peg” Corbin, 94, went home to be with her Lord on June 15, 1998.
Mrs. Corbin was loved and admired by many as a brave, generous and independent spirit. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J.; and daughter, Margaret Anderson, and is survived by son, George (Betty) Corbin of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Rebecca (John) Jamros of Potterville, Donald (Michelle) Anderson of Ypsilanti, David (Charlene) Corbin of N. Canton, Ohio, and Georgette (Tim) Scheeser of Akron, Ohio; and eight great-grandchildren, Many and Jessie Scheeser, Sarah and John Jamros, Staci and Stephanie Corbin, and Trevor and Andy Rose. The family will receive friends at a memorial service in their home on Sept. 27. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.
LeRoy LaVerne Cousins
LeRoy LaVerne Cousins, 62, of Nashville died July 14, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Cousins was born Feb. 10, 1935 in Cassopolis, the son of LaVerne and Thelma (Pierce) Cousins. He was a self-employed truck driver and was a member of the local Teamsters Union. He was also the former owner of LeRoy’s Bar in Vermontville.
He is survived by four sons, Coy (Cecil) of Vermontville, Roy “Sparky” (Diane) of Nashville, Gary, and Burt (Angie), both of Vermontville; six grandchildren; brother, Herman (Nancy) of Charlotte; sister, Virginia Stanton of Greenfield; mother, Thelma Maybe of Hastings.
Services were July 17 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was in West Carmel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Dialysis Center, Leila Hospital, Battle Creek.
Mack Crannell
Mack Crannell, age 93, of Olivet died Friday, June 12, 1998 at the Country Living Adult Foster Care Home, Olivet, where he had resided for about two months.
Mr. Crannell was born in Olivet the son of Albert B. and Olive (Mack) Crannell, and had lived his entire life in the same home until moving into the foster care home. He had been employed by the City of Olivet as superintendent of water works, from where he retired after 25 years of service. Previously he had worked on road construction when U.S. 27 was build from Olivet to Lansing, had worked for Olivet College, had worked for the Olivet school system as janitor and school bus driver, had worked for Nash-Kelvinator during the war, had served as sexton of both the Bosworth and Olivet cemeteries, and had served as the Olivet village marshal.
He was married to Edyth C. Nelson in 1937. She preceded him in death on April 17, 1987. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris Jones, in February 1998.
Surviving are one son, Boyde (Eva) Cranell of Bellevue; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Cassidy of Lansing.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 16, at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Clark A. Hock officiating. Interment was in Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
