Crystal I. Buxton
Crystal I. Buxton, 87, of Delray Beach, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died June 1, 1998.
Mrs. Buxton was born Jan. 17, 1911, on the Schad Homestead at Wayland, the daughter of Fred and Lottie (Thaler) Schad. On Nov. 11, 1934 she married Henry Buxton. She was a teacher, having taught in many schools in Allegan and Eaton counties. She retired from Parkview Elementary School in 1975. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and Naomi Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was a life member of Michigan O.E.S., Maple City Chapter #28, Association of Retired Schools Personnel, and Eaton County Association of Retired School Personnel. Mrs. Buxton volunteered for Bluebirds of the Campfire Organization, Sunday school teacher, and Cub Scout leader.
She is survived by her daughter, Joane Wiesenfeld of Orlando, Fla.; son, Edward (Frances) Buxton of Delray Beach, Fla.; six grandsons; two granddaughters, eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Henry; one grandson, Aaron Bartlett; five brothers; and two sisters.
Graveside services were June 5 at Pine Hill Cemetery, Grand Rapids. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte.
Grace M. Cade
Grace M. Cade, 92, of Lansing, formerly of Holt and Charlotte, died July 8, 1998 at her residence.
Mrs. Cade was born April 16, 1906 in Hillsdale County, the daughter of LeGard and Marian (Bunday) Convis. She retired from the State of Michigan Social Services Department, Charlotte in 1975.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Paul) Wright of Lansing; son, Richard L. Cade of Boise, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Evelyn Cade of Mason; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harold; husband, Gerald Cade; one son, Robert W. Cade; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Cade; and grandson-in-law, Edmund F. Carne.
Services were July 11 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. David Selleck officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, the American Cancer Society of the American Heart Association.
Mary E. Carothers
Mary E. “Betty” Carothers, 83, of Gun Lake died March 31, 1998 at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Mrs. Carothers was born June 23, 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Gordon and Alice (West) Bennett. She was raised in the Cincinnati area and graduated from Withrow High School in 1932. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1936 with a degree in sociology.
She married Dr. Daniel Carothers on Aug. 18, 1936. Mrs. Carothers was a member of the First Congregational Church of Charlotte, the Blanch Moyer Circle of the church, Gun Lake Women’s Club, Yankee Springs Golf Club, the Charlotte Country Club, and the Charlotte Medical Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Gary (Bonnie) Carothers, of Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Sally (James Vogel) Baragar of Grand Rapids, and Jane Hill of Middleville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Services were April 3 at Wren Funeral Home, Hastings, with the Rev. Peter Brenner officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Jay F. Carpenter
Jay F. Carpenter, 91, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Olivet and Charlotte, died June 21m 1998, at his home.
Mr. Carpenter was born July 29, 1906 near Stanton, the son of Benton and Celia (French) Carpenter, and was raised on a farm near Olivet. He later resided in Charlotte for over 50 years, and then moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mr. Carpenter was the owner of the Jay F. Carpenter Calendar Co. from 1927 to 1959. He later became a partner in the C & B Silo Co. until retirement in 1981.
He is survived by his two sons, Peter (Connie) Carpenter of Charlotte and Daniel (Linda) Carpenter of Parkland, Fla.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and his longtime friend, Eda McCrary of Wilton Manors, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evadene (Lake) Carpenter; sister, May Stevens; and brothers, Ray and Fay Carpenter.
Services were June 26 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte. Interment was in the Lee Center Cemetery.

Leola Cecial Carter
Leola Cecial Carter, 85, of Charlotte passed away July 8, 1998, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.
Mrs. Carter was born April 3, 1913, in Mecosta County, the daughter of Harrison and Lettie (Cool) Hutson. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte and a former member of Mary Murray Circle.
She is survived by her husband, Donald G. Carter; son, Donald L. of Plainwell; two daughters, Rosalie (Larry) Demarest of Union City and Joan E. Lawrence of Lockhart, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Louise Masters; and granddaughter, Tonya Sipes.
Services were July 10 at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Booth officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Elida D. Cassidy
Elida D. Cassidy, 74, of Eaton Rapids died Jan. 26, 1998, in Lansing.
Mrs. Cassidy was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Grover and Ruby (Harris) Letts. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, and a founding director of the Heart & Hands program, having retired in 1997 after 16 years of service. She was a former secretary and 20-year member of the CCAG Christmas Basket Project. She retired from Eaton Stamping in 1981 after 23 years of service. She earned Master Gardener certification through Michigan State University and had been involved with wildlife rehabilitation.
She is survived by one daughter, Dee Cassidy of Eaton Rapids; special nephew, Scott (Julie) Newsome of Lansing; one sister, Alberta (George) Harris of Eaton Rapids; one brother, C. Paul Letts of Eaton Rapids; three brothers-in-law, Lloyd (Mary) and Don (Anita), both of Cleveland, Ohio, and Hal (Midge) of Florida; three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Letts of Rochester Hills, Mary Wilder of Florida, and Shirley (Tom) Adams of Georgia; 38 nieces and nephews; 81 grandnieces and grandnephews; and 32 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar.
Services were Jan. 31 with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Joseph Henry Caudill
Joseph Henry Caudill, age 65, of Duck Lake, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, December 18, 1998. Born August 10, 1933 in Blue Stone, Kentucky the son of Rollie and Melvina (Ingle) Caudill. Mr. Caudill was a retired employee of Johnson Iron Industry in Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Theresa.
Surviving are his wife, Lillie; 3 daughters, Mary (Norman) Haddad of Lansing, Linda (Willy) Osier of Potterville and Alice Jordon of Charlotte; son, Joseph Eric (Mindy) Caudill of Nashville, MI; 7 step children; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Arlie (Ethel Jean) Caudill of Charlevoix and John Raymond (Ramona) Caudill of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 22nd, at 1:00 p.m., from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Richard Garn of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Charlotte officiating. Burial will follow in the Plains/Montgomery Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers will be Ray Caudill, Arlie Caudill, Vincent Caudill, Ricky Darnell, Leonard Kriescher and Paul McArthur.
John Chambers
John Chambers, age 67, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 1998 at his residence. He was born July 25, 1930, in Wentzville, MO to Carolyn and Floyd Chambers. He lived many years in the Triadelphia area of Wheeling, W.VA and came to the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids with his brother Ralph in 1947. John graduated in 1948 from Eaton Rapids Senior High. He attended Cleary College before joining the Army and served overseas during the Korean War in the Signal Corps. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1957 from Michigan State University. John retired from Kopplin Co. in 1993 and resided at Duck Lake. He was a member of the Brookfield Eaton United Methodist Church and served as Chairman of the Administrative Board for several years. He belonged to the Eaton Rapids Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM and Chapter #241 Order of the Eastern Star and held offices for many years.
John is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Gail Bresky; 2 sons, Burke Chambers, Scott (Samantha) Chambers; 4 grandchildren, Jerry, Becky, Kyle, Rebecca; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph (Barbara) Chambers and several nieces and nephews.
Interment of cremains was at Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with a Memorial Service held on July 27, 1998 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
The family asks that tributes be made to the Eaton Rapids Masonic Temple Board or to Brookfield Eaton United Methodist Church.
