Barbara Tomlin
Barbara Patricia Tomlin, 59, of Taylor, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998.
Ms. Tomlin was born March 11, 1939 in Ecorse, the daughter of Roy and Gladys Hood.
She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Hensley of Charlotte; four sons, Samuel Hensley of Taylor, Gary Hensley of Dearborn, Darryl Hensley and Waylon Hensley both of Detroit; two sisters, Brenda Eversole of Monroe and Beulah Baldridge of Woodhaven; and a brother, John Hood of Vermontville.
Services were held at Oakridge Cemetery in Flat Rock with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home.
Helen Tower
Helen I. Tower, 72, of Lansing, formerly of Grand Ledge, died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998 in Meridian Township.
Mrs. Tower was born Oct. 25, 1926 in Lansing the daughter of Claude and Tena (Ommen) Myers. She was a retired employee of Michigan State Seed Company of Grand Ledge with 17 years of service, and was a former employee of several other Grand Ledge businesses. She was a graduate of the Grand Ledge High School class of 1944.
She is survived by two daughters, Tamara (Jerry) Hebert of White Pigeon and Tena (Alex) Tower-Walacavage of Lansing; three sons, Tim Tower of Grand Ledge, Thomas and Gary Tower both of Lansing; six grandchildren; two brothers, Richard (Lois) Myers and Robert Myers all of Vermontville; one sister, Sharon Davis of Nokomis, Fla.; one step-brother, Roland (Audrey) Myers of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and a brother, Burdette.
Services were held Nov. 17 at the Peters and Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge with the Sister Maxine McGee of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, White Pigeon, officiating. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the G.L.E.A.P.
Mariana Towers
Mariana M. Towers, 56, of Charlotte, died Dec. 5, 1998 at Ingham Medical Hospital, Lansing.
Mrs. Towers was born in Charlotte, the daughter of Almond and Lorena (Spencer) Huntoon.
She was an avid horse lover.
She is survived by her husband, Terry E. Towers; a daughter, Lisa (Kevin) Jackson of Sunfield; two sons, Mike Love and Loren (Barbara) Love of Charlotte; mother, Lorena Huntoon Lindahl of Charlotte; and six grandchildren.
Services were Dec. 8 at the First Congregational Church of Charlotte. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Lilah J. Towner
Lilah J. Towner, 82, of Sunfield passed away Feb. 2, 1998, in Clare.
Mrs. Towner was born July 8, 1915, in Grand Ledge, the daughter of Arthur and Julia (Kirk) Challender. She was employed at the Oldsmobile Paint Plant for 13 years, local 652. She was a member of the women’s bowling league “Wednesday Afternoon Loafers” of Lake Odessa, the Lioness Club of Sunfield, Singles Club of Woodland, and a volunteer of Ionia Co.
She is survived by her two stepsons, Robert R. Towner of Grand Ledge and Howard E. Towner of California; three daughters, Bernice J. Gilliam of Biloxi, MC, Ardella Allen of Lake George, and Carol-Jean Towner of Belding; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Burt Towner; sister, Lena Harmon; brother, Lavern Challender; both her parents, Arthur and Julia Challender; one grandson; and one great-grandson.
Services were Feb. 6 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Richard Cross officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery.
Shawn D. Trimmer
Shawn Dickerson Trimmer, 40, of Potterville died July 11, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Trimmer was born Sept. 5, 1957, in Lansing, the son of DuWayne and Gretchen Trimmer. He lived in Potterville his entire life.
He is survived by his father, DuWayne, of Potterville; two brothers, Kenn of Nampa, Idaho, and Joe (Paula) of Potterville; two sisters, Becki (Paul) Hornbaker of Boise, Idaho, and Amy Peters (John Houston) of Lansing; four aunts, Ellen Jones and Karen Gierman, both of Lansing, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Gretchen, and infant sister, Debbie.
At Mr. Trimmer’s request, there will be no services. Arrangements were made by Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale.
Fern E. (Allen) Twichell
Fern E. (Allen) Twichell, age 85 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, May 2, 1998 at her residence following a long illness. She was born July 12, 1912 in Windsor Township, the daughter of Eugene and Emma (Thompson) Allen. Mrs. Twichell was preceded in death by her husband Roy A. Twichell in 1971, a brother, Don Allen and a sister, Lena Allen.
Surviving are 5 children, Esther (Richard) Scott of Florida, Rex (Judy) Twichell of Springport, Neil (Jackie) Twichell of Eaton Rapids, Florence Twichell of Eaton Rapids and Tom (Deborah) Twichell of Eaton Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Francis Allen of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, May 5, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Dimondale Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Wayne Twichell, Phillip Twichell, Scott Twichell, Eric Twichell, Aaron McCullough and Claude Murray Jr. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to the Hospice of Lansing, 6035 Executive Dr., Ste. 103, Lansing, MI 48911-5338 in memory of Fern E. Twichell.
Mona A. Valero
Mona A. Valero, 55, of Charlotte died Jan. 27, 1998.
Mrs. Valero was born Feb. 23, 1942 in Charlotte, the daughter of Vaughn and Vivian Griffin. She married Geraldo L. Valero on Jan. 21, 1967, and had worked at Aluminum Extrusions and Jansko Manufacturing, both of Charlotte. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #42 and a former charter member of Eagles Aerie #3552.
She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Luis; one daughter, Kerrie Lynn of Charlotte; one son, Tony (Tina) Valero of Charlotte; one brother, Gary Griffin of Flint; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Eva T. Veeder Haskell VanAken
Eva T. Veeder Haskell VanAken, age 98, died Wednesday, August 26, 1998 at the St. Lawrence/Dimondale Facility. Eva was the youngest of three daughters born to Willard and Mary Veeder on December 20, 1899. Her early years were spent in Mt. Pleasant and Clare, Michigan, where she graduated from high school and received a life certificate from Central Michigan Normal School. After three years of teaching in Owosso she married Gerald F. Haskell and they moved to Lansing where he started practicing law and she became a buyer and manager of several departments at Sprowl Brothers. In 1938 they moved to Eaton Rapids where they remodeled an old farmhouse and became “City Farmers”. In 1941 Steven Thomas and Barbara Jean became their son and daughter and Eva was busy raising a family. She became active in 4-H and Extension clubs. In 1956 Eva started teaching in the Eaton Rapids Public Schools and completed her education at Michigan State University where she received a B.A. Degree in education. She taught the fourth grade in Eaton Rapids for eleven years before retiring in 1967.
After her retirement she became active in community affairs. She was a starter member of the Eaton Rapids Retired Teacher’s Club, became an honorary member of the Hospital Auxiliary, a Life member of E.R.C.H., a member of the U & I Club for over 20 years and belonged to several bridge clubs and the L.L. Club. She was a friend of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Miriam Circle. Her husband Gerald F. Haskell of 41 years passed away on September 20, 1966.
Surviving from this marriage is one son, Steven T. (Shirley) Haskell of Lansing; and daughter, Barbara Jean (Leo) Haskell Jones of Columbia, Tennessee; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; plus 6 step great-grandchildren.
In 1969 she married Herbert M. VanAken and they lived in her home until his death in 1977.
Surviving from this marriage are seven stepchildren, Elaine (Jerry) Cowan of Okemos; Alice (Claude) Bonta of Roscommon; Herbert K. (Barbara) VanAken of Eaton Rapids; Charles (Barbara) VanAken of Eaton Rapids; Dorothy (Merlin) Spitzbergen of Oakland; John (Adrienne) VanAken of Lompoc, CA; and Ruth Ann (Jamie) Abbott of Nepean Ontario, Canada; 24 step-grandchildren; numerous step great-grandchildren; three nieces, Marjorie Jean Derby of Ithaca, Pat (Vic) Stapleton of Ithaca, Mary Lou (Dick) Schneckenberger of Charlotte; one nephew, Wayne (Lynn) Terwilliger of St. Paul, MN; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Eva had requested Cremation with a small family gathering held in her honor. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens or the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital Vision 2000. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
