Arlene M. Johnson
Arlene M. (Simpson) Johnson, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Grand Ledge, died Feb. 16, 1998, at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility, Charlotte, following a long illness.
Mrs. Johnson was born May 2, 1910, in Chester Township, the daughter of Ralph E. and Mabel I. (Sweet) Newth. She was a former volunteer with the American Red Cross, working with the blood bank; former manager of the gift store at Hayes Green Beach Hospital and former secretary with the National Farmers Organization.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary (Roger) Ash of Charlotte and Katherine (Robert) Leonard Mulliken; four granddaughters; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Martha Newth of Mulliken and Lulu Gregg of Grand Ledge.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Nelson Simpson and John T. Johnson; two sisters, Bernice H. Bailey and Gladys L. Cathcart; and two brothers, Emerson and Herbert Newth.
Private interment was in Gresham Cemetery.

Doris Johnson
Doris Lucille Johnson, 86, of Charlotte died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998 at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. Mrs. Johnson was born Aug. 27, 1912 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Leva (Gale) Whittum.
She previously taught in the country school system, was an avid card player and former member of the Brookfield United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her son, Larry (Sharon) Johnson of Olivet; daughter, Janice (Rodger) Hisler of Charlotte; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; her brother, Wayne (Virginia) Whittum of Albion, and her Aunt Marie Current of Jackson.
Funeral services are Monday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Geri Litchfield officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Visitation is Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Brookfield United Methodist Church.
James E. Johnson
James E. Johnson, age 82, of Eaton Rapids died Monday, May 4, 1998 at his residence. He has finished the race and heard his Father say: “Well done thou good and faithful servant”. Mr. Johnson was a retired contractor for Primo Construction Company of Okemos and a member of the Michigan Carpenter’s Union Local 1449 of Lansing and a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Lansing. James is preceded in death by a sister Mozella Reaves and grandson Seth Page. He is standing at the river of life with Seth his grandson who met him at heaven’s gate, fishing pole in hand, finding joy and peace beyond measure.
A devoted and loving husband to Annie Mae (Trosper) Johnson; a strong and wonderful father to James M. (Joan) Johnson of Eaton Rapids, Herbert A. Johnson of Charlotte, Phyllis A. (Jim) Davison of Eaton Rapids and Judy Page of East Lansing; and a great grandpa to 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Eula Reed, Rosie Buttrey and Annie Lora Morgan and 1 brother, Elmer Johnson all of Tennessee; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 7, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Floyd Hughes officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers will be Craig Johnson, Jim Johnson, Tory Page, Aaron Achors, Mark Wells and Bill O’Connell. Andrew Thomas Joostberns Sr.
Andrew Thomas Joostberns Sr., 55, of Vermontville passed away July 6, 1998, at Sparrow Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Joostberns was born April 12, 1943, in Allegan, the son of the late Gerrit and Florence Joostberns. He was a senior supervisor for the Board of Water and Light, retiring in 1996. He was a former chief of the Vermontville Fire Department, president of Vermontville Lions Club and president of the Maple Valley Athletic Boosters, as well as an avid supporter of athletics.
Mr. Joostberns married Darlene Kay (Kizer) on Oct. 1, 1960.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene; four sons, Andrew Jr. (Susan) of Las Vegas, Nev., Tony (Brenda) of Nashville, Randy (Joene) of Battle Creek, and Scott (Tina) of Fairborn, Ohio; one daughter, Debra, at home; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Pearl Hunsberger of Bloomingdale, Shirley (Glenn) Kaylor, Donna Kaylor of Allegan, Charlotte (Orlin) Eberhard of Bloomingdale; three brothers, Gary (Caroline) of Grand Junction, Paul (Susan) of Grand Ledge, and Donald (Mary) of Portage; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were July 9 at the First Congregational Church in Vermontville, with the Rev. Eric Lison officiating. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Jesse R. Jordan
Jesse R. Jordan, 91, died Dec. 27, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Jordan was born April 6, 1906, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of William and Laura (Pittro) Jordan. He was a lifelong resident of the Eaton Rapids area and retired from Federal Drop Forge in 1966 after 30 years of service.
He was survived by two daughters, Doris (Albert) Adams of Eaton Rapids and Barbara (Leo) Jones of Columbia, Tenn.; three sons, Jesse Jr. (Betty), Bill (Estella), and Steven (Shirley) Haskel, all of Eaton Rapids; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Arlene May of Charlotte. There were no services. Arrangements were made by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Marie E. Kappis
Marie E. Kappis, 90, of Marshall died Feb. 11, 1998, at Marshall Manor following a short illness.
Mrs. Kappis was born Nov. 7, 1907, in Clarendon Township, the daughter of Frank and Maude (Garry) Hess. She was a lifelong resident of this area and was a graduate of County Normal. She was a teacher and had taught at county schools in Homer/Eckford areas. On June 30, 1931, she married George H. Kappis. Mrs. Kappis was a charter member of the Eastern Starr, and was a Worthy Matron.
She is survived by her sister, Vera Kidd of Battle Creek; brother, Clyde Hess of Bellevue; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; sister, Ella Jennings; and brothers, Howard Hess and Milfred Hess.
Services were Feb. 14 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. Interment followed in Oakridge Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Heart Association or to the American Cancer Society.
Roy E. Keeler
Roy E. “Pa” Keeler, 80, of Eaton Rapids died Feb. 5, 1998, in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Keeler was born March 14, 1917, in Eaton Rapids, the son of Lloyd and Bertha Ella (Kikendall) Keeler. He was the owner and operator of the Keeler Trading Post for 50 years. He was a life member of N.M.L.R.A., N.R.A., Ohio Gun Collectors Association, Michigan Antique Arms Association, Eaton Rapids Conservation Club, and the 3 Fires Muzzleloaders Club. He was a member of Chief Okemos Sportsmen’s Club, Michigan Schutzen Society, and the American Single Shot Rifle Association. Mr. Keeler was the first inductee into the Muzzleloaders Hall of Fame in 1995 and the second member inducted into the Northwest Council in 1963. For 25 years, Roy wrote “Pa's Powder Horn” for the M.U.C.C. Magazine. He also taught. He retired as a Millwright from Fisher Body after 32 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Margaret; two daughters, B. Jean (Richard) Brown of Eaton Rapids and Jo (Bruce) Gage of Albion; son, Bob (Dorie) Keeler of Springport; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; six brothers, Arthur (Pauline) Keeler of Port Huron, Howard Keeler of Eaton Rapids, Ron (Jean) Keeler of Hickory Corners, Chuck (Louise) Keeler of Springport, Dr. Van (Aino) Keeler of Shelbyville, and Bob (Erlene) Keeler of Spring Arbor; sister-in-law, Ellen Keeler of Allegan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma “Ma” Keeler; two brothers, Forrest and Lewis Keeler.
Services were Feb. 9 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Lee Kellogg
Lee Anthony Kellogg, 22, of Cornersville, Tenn., died Oct. 18, 1998, following an automobile accident on his way to work.
Mr. Kellogg was a native of Lansing, son of Dennis Kellogg Sr. of Eaton Rapids and Cindy Wallace Gilson of Cornersville.
He was employed by the State of Tennessee Parks Department, was a student at Columbia State Community College and a member of the First Baptist Church of Pulaski and the Promise Keepers.
He is survived by her parents; three sisters, Autum Kellogg, Spring Gilson, and Wynter Gilson all of Cornersville; a stepmother, Barbara Kellogg of Eaton Rapids, paternal grandmother, Laura Kellogg of Charlotte; maternal grandparents, Dan and Rose Frary of Battle Creek; and maternal great-grandmother, Goldie Vanocker of Battle Creek.
Services were held Oct. 22 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Dr. Charles Moore officiating.
