John D. “Jack” Gephart
John D. “Jack” Gephart, age 75 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998 at his residence. He was born July 2, 1922 in Lansing the son of Walter O. and Dora Belle (Miller) Gephart. Jack was a retired electrician for Root Electric in Lansing and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in Lansing. An Air Force Veteran of World War II, Jack loved horses and was an active member of the Eaton County 4-H. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Thelma (Smith) in 1986.
Surviving are his wife, Lois; 2 daughters, Nancy (Dean) Fox of Wheatfield, IN and Carol (Bob) Kennedy of Eaton Rapids; stepchildren, Spencer (Sharon) Carroll of Grand Ledge, Penny (Dick) Johnson of Olivet, Connie Carroll of Eaton Rapids and Chris (Bill) Rogers of Lansing; 2 grandchildren, Troy (Dawn) Fox of DeMotte, IN and Tina (Ed) Harrington of Wheatfield, IN; 4 step-grandchildren, Stacy Suege, Starla Manchester, Deirdre Sisson and Stephanie Mikesel; 3 great-grandchildren; 3 step great-grandchildren; sister, Myra Lucille Tooker of Lansing; and 2 nephews, Larry and Ross (Pat) Tooker.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 25, 1998 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Bishop Dean Fitches officiating. Graveside services followed in the Dimondale Cemetery in Dimondale. Casket bearers were Troy Fox, Ed Harrington, Norman Lautzenheiser, Ross Tooker, Dick Johnson and Spencer Carroll, honorary bearer, Bill Rogers. For those desiring, a memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Clinton Memorial and Sparrow, 304 N. Bush St., St. Johns, Michigan 48879 in memory of John D. Gephart.
Francis E. “Gibby” Gibson
Francis Eugene “Gibby” Gibson, 47, of Battle Creek died Aug. 24, 1998 at his home.
Mr. Gibson was born Aug. 31, 1950, in Lansing, the son of Phillip Gibson Jr. and Esma (Drewyor) Smith. He had been a production worker. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, member of the Eagles Aerie #3552, and American Legion Post #42 of Charlotte.
He is survived by one daughter, Elisha of Vermontville; two sons, Shaun (Gracie Pena) of Vermontville, and Josh of Battle Creek; three brothers, David (Barbara) of Haslett, Tom (Martha) of Charlotte, and George (Sally); step-father, Ron Smith of Charlotte; two step-sisters, Diana (Ron) Moore of Kentucky and Terry (Steve) Deer of Montreal, Canada; and one step-brother, Ronnie Smith of Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were Aug. 27 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with George Howe officiating. Interment was in Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.
Memorial contributions may be made to his children.
Marilyn Marie Smith Gibson
Marilyn Marie Smith Gibson, age 46, of Springport, passed away July 16, 1998. Ms. Gibson was an active member and current secretary of the Onondaga Sportsman’s Club. She was also a graduate of the Springport High School Class of 1970. Ms. Gibson fought a brave battle with lung cancer for 20 months and now rests in the House of the Lord. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving are her parents, Harold and Nona Smith; 1 daughter, Angi (James) Wollet; 1 son, Jesse (Aimee) Gibson; 2 brothers, Roger (Yvonne Whitaker) and Gary (Cindy) Smith; grandchildren, Katherine Marie , Rachell E. and Stephanie K. Wollet and Brock Joseph Gibson; 1 niece, April Smith; and 2 nephews, Jeff and Brian Smith.
According to Ms. Gibson’s wishes, cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Saturday, July 25 at 11 a.m. at the Pope United Methodist Church, Pope Church Rd., Springport, with the Rev. Merlin Pratt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. After taking care of their expenses, the family will make a donation to the Mission of Hope, who helped Ms. Gibson through some very tough times.
Pearl Gibson
Pearl E. Gibson, 82, of Sturgis, died at Life Care Center, LaGrange, Ind.
Mrs. Gibson was born Dec. 31, 1915 in Sturgis the daughter of Jesse and Rosa (Stevens) Shook.
She was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and on Jan. 10, 1948 in LaGrange, Ind. she married Thomas Gibson. She was a secretary for Formed Tubes Co. and Paramount Furniture Co. and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Sturgis where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a graduate of Sturgis High School class of 1934 and had been active with their children in Girl Scouts and 4-H. She enjoyed playing bridge, crocheting and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Gail Gibson of Anderson, SC; two daughters and son-in-law, Janis and Keith Tirrell of Charlotte and Cheryl McNew of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Craig, Mark, and Stacey Gibson, Peter, Chelsea, Jeff and Grant Tirrell, Matthew McNew; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Evangeline McBride of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Ethel Niles and Mildred Griffis.
Services celebrating her life were Nov. 2 at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Keith Treman and Pastor Robert Keim officiating. Interment was at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis.
Memorial contributions may be made to Life Care Center of LaGrange.
Ross Gilbert
Ross Emerson Gilbert died at home on October 20, 1998 after a long illness. Ross was born August 2, 1910 in Pleasant Lake, Ind., one of nine children of Shirley and Nettie (Deller) Gilbert. Ross was a tool and die maker for General Motors, retiring in 1971 after 31 years. He was a member of the GM Quarter Century Club, the Houghton Lake Elks, and a former member of the First Congregational Church in Charlotte, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. After retiring, Ross and his wife Bernice divided their time between their homes in Venice, Fla. and Houghton Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bernice (Buffenbarger) ; 2 daughters, Linda (Harold) DeVore of Grand Ledge, and Janet (Jim) Remus of St. Johns; granddaughters, Lisa Rosenfeld of Los Angeles, Calif.; grandsons, Jeffrey VanderVeen of Denver, Colo., Scott (Missy) Remus of Laramie, Wyo., and Matthew Remus of Wixom; sister, Martha Tuttle of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and brothers, Ned (Helen) Gilbert of Auburn, Ind. and Harry Gilbert of Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Palmer-Bush Delta Chapel, 6020 W. Saginaw Hwy., with Rev. Casey Wells of Westminister Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Those desiring may made contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Gilbert.
Dean Glasslee
Dean O. Glasslee, 100, of Findlay, Ohio, formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 in Findlay.
Mr. Glasslee was born Dec. 11, 1897 in Clare County, the son of Perry and Emma Glasslee. While in Charlotte he was employed by the Aluminum Extrusions Division of Hoover from where he retired after about 30 years of service. He had lived in the Barryton area for a number of years and was a member of the Barryton Church of Christ.
He is survived by a daughter, Helen Glasslee of Royal, Iowa; a step-son, Wendell Woodward of Findlay, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a sister, Mildred Hammer of Utah.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; two daughters, Illa Loraine Glasslee and Shirley Wright; a son, Leonard Glasslee and a great-great-granddaughter, Bailey Rae Fletcher.
Services were held Dec. 9 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte with the Rev. Donald Ruff of the Barryton Church of Christ officiating. Interment was at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.
Leonard Glasslee
Leonard P. Glasslee, 62, of Dowling died Sept. 19, 1998.
Mr. Glasslee was born June 25, 1936 in Hastings, the son of Dean and Laura (Murray) Glasslee. He served in the United States Army and worked for Eaton Manufacturing as a machinist.
He is survived by a daughter, Laurie Helberg of Bellevue; a son, Lynn (Kim) Glasslee of Bellevue; three grandchildren; his father, Dean of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Helen Glasslee of Iowa; and friend Mary Lou Powell of Dowling. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Committal services were held with R. Raymond Rossell officiating at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
Clyde R. Gordeneer
Clyde R. “Lucky” Gordeneer, 88, of Charlotte died April 12, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Mr. Gordeneer was born Nov. 5, 1903 in Chester Township, the son of Zackariah and Ella (Carter) Gordeneer. He worked for Oldsmobile, retiring after 43 years of service. He was a life member of the Eagles #3552.
He is survived by his son, Dennis (Judy) Gordeneer of Charlotte; daughter, Brona (Harold) Kimmel of Jackson; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen.
Services were April 16 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment will be in Needmore Cemetery.
