Charles B. Wixson
Charles B. Wixson, 78, of Charlotte died unexpectedly on May 4, 1998.
Mr. Wixson was born in Albion, the son of Harold and Mayta (Seifert) Wixson. He had been a Charlotte residence since 1991 coming from Eaton Rapids. He had been employed as a machinist at Union Steel Co., Albion, where he retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. Mr. Wixson was a member of the Michigan Association of the Deaf both in Lansing and Battle Creek.
He married Julia K. Andrews on Dec. 17, 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Julia K. Wixson; two daughters, Karen Foster of Daytona, Fla. and Carol Culley of Pasco, Wash.; one son, William Oteney of Hillsdale; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Irwin “Bud” Wixson of Albion; and two sisters, Thelma Gibbs of Charlotte and Ferna Weir of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sue Ann Shepard; brother, Edward Wixson; and sister, Joan Broxholm.
At his request, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral services.
Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Alberta Womble
Alberta P. Womble, formerly Avis, 81, of Charlotte entered heaven’s gates Nov. 20, 1998 surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Womble was born Jan. 13, 1917 in Lansing. In June, 1937 she wed Edgar Avis. Living on their farm in West Windsor Township for over 30 years; until his death in 1973. In 1981 she married John Womble, together enjoying winters in Fla. and summers in Mich.; until his illness and death in 1995. Peggy as she was often called, had worked at J.C. Penney’s, J.W. Knapp’s, and finally at Sears until her retirement. Her family remembers her as a very strong woman in the face of adversity. She loved to fish, tend to her yard and flowers, and be with her family. she left a legacy of love and forgiveness, harboring no bitterness, always having room at her table.
She is survived by her four daughters, Annette Noecker of Arcadia, Fla., Terrie (Zane) Thomas of Potterville, Carolyn (Ray) Putney of Charlotte, and Natalie (Lloyd) Sharpes of Vermontville; three siblings, Lewis Arnold (Harriet) Kraner of Grand Ledge, Douglas (Barbara) Kraner of Gobles and Dorothy (Don) Woolever of Montoursville, Penn.; special friends, John and Connie Hong and family and Barbara Gibson; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Pearl Kraner; a grandson, Kendall Wilson; and four half-siblings, Fred and Ferris McMichael, Hazel Binkley, and Nellie Smith, whom she especially loved.
Services were held Nov. 24 at Pray Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Moore from First Baptist Church officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or First Baptist Church.
Ruth S. Wood
Ruth S. Wood, 92, of Charlotte died May 14, 1998, at Illa’s Tender Care A.F.C. home where she resided for about two years.
Mrs. Wood was born in Springport, the daughter of Thomas and Oleva (Reniger) Shelton. She had been a lifelong resident of the Lansing, Olivet and Charlotte areas. She was a former elementary school teacher. She was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC and its Ella Barber Circle, the Charlotte Women’s Club, and the Eaton Art League.
She married Lawrence E. Wood of June 17, 1926.
She is survived by her two sons, Rodney Wood of Charlotte, N.C., and Charles (Bernell) Wood of Fenton; two daughters, Marian (Robert) Johnson of Charlotte and Eleanor (Mario) Scibetta of Eric, Pa.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence.
Services were May 16 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Mrs. Wood’s grandson, the Rev. Lawrence Wood, officiating. Interment was in Lee Center Cemetery in Lee Township, Calhoun County.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital Project 2000 or the Molly Wood Educational Foundation.
Alice E. Woodard
Alice E. Woodard, 91, of Charlotte died April 29, 1998 at St. Lawrence Dimondale Center.
Mrs. Woodard was born June 4, 1906 near North Adams, the daughter of William A. and Sydney (West) Daniels. She graduated from North Adams High School in 1922 and E.M.U., Ypsilanti in 1924. From 1929 to 1969 she taught elementary schools in Dimondale, Mason, Millett and Charlotte. In 1983, she married C. Earl Woodard. Mrs. Woodard served as president of C.E.A., Eaton Co. Association of Retired School Personnel and Mary Martha Circle of the Congregational Church. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Business Women’s Guild and MARSP; also the Eaton County Historical Society.
She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Violet Daniels of North Adams and Marion Hetrick of Eaton Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl.
Services were May 4 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to Hayes Green Beach Hospital or the First Congregational Church.
Audrey Wright
Audrey J. Wright, 10 months, of Bellevue died Oct. 13, 1998, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.
She was born Nov. 21 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Harold and Lisa (Pufpaff) Wright.
She is survived by her parents; one brother, Benjamin; her grandparents, Gene and Virginia Colter of Bellevue, and Joyce Wright, and Pete, and Cathy, all of Traverse City; her great-grandparents, Ken and Elva Pufpaff of Bellevue, Ray and Virginia Dollison of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Gus and Arlene Simko of Allen Park.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Karl Pufpaff.
Services were Oct. 6 with Pastor Robert Homan officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel in Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Dewayne J. Wright
Dewayne J. Wright, 73, died Sept. 9, 1998, at his farm home in Kalamo Township, Vermontville, where he had lived for 47 years.
Mr. Wright was born in Chester Township Oct. 10, 1924, the son of Don and Veda (Larabee) Wright. He was a 1942 graduate of Charlotte High School and a veteran of World War II, with the 2nd Armored Division. He was stationed at Camp Hood, Texas, from 1949 to 1950 and with the Korean Conflict from 1951-52 with the 196th Infantry at Camp Carson, Colo. He married Barbara Boyd Sept. 12, 1950, at Angola, Ind. He retired from Fisher Body in Lansing in 1977 after 30 years of service.
He was a past member of the Michigan Pony Pullers’ Association and Michigan Dynamometer Horse Pullers. He was also a member of the South Dakota 196th Regimental Combat Team Association.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; four daughters, Linda (Mike) Kenyon of Nashville, Debra Wright of Spring Lake, and Cindy (Rick) Rochester and Denise (Randy) Kendra, both of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Sarah and Patrick Kenyon, Ross and Kirby Rochester, and Eli, Zachary, and Lexi Kendra; four sisters, Betty (Vern) Gilding and Esther (Raymond) Grant, both of Charlotte, Phyllis (Stanley) Bothwell of Fountain, and Patty (Max) Butler of Eaton Rapids; two brothers, Wendall (Dema) of Vermontville and Larry (Patti) of Charlotte; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Ray) Harper of Charlotte and Alice (Paul) Edwards of Grand Ledge; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, J. Patrick Kenyon; and two brothers, Carroll and Lester.
Services were Sept. 12 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in the Kalamo Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry County Hospice.
Marion Wright
Marion Wright, 79, of Woodland, died Oct. 24, 1998.
Mrs. Wright was born Feb. 26, 1919, in Eaton County, the daughter of Ben and Sarah (Taylor) Butler. She and her husband, Bill, owned and operated The Lounge and Bill’s Bar in Charlotte.
She is survived by two daughters, Vivian (Donald) Schultz and Connie (James) Garrison, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, June (Richard) King of Charlotte; and two sisters-in-law, Elaine Butler of Grand Ledge and Wanda Butler of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” in 1988; and three brothers, Thomas Butler, William Butler, and Phillip Butler.
Services were Oct. 28 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Carl Litchfield officiating. Interment was as Center Eaton Cemetery in Eaton County.
Phyllis K. Yeomans
Phyllis K. Yeomans, 80, of Bellevue died May 26, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, Charlotte.
Mrs. Yeomans was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Bellevue, to Earl and Lucy (Taylor) Kelly. She graduated from Bellevue High School and Cleary Business College. She was employed at the U.S. Post Office in Bellevue for 20 years, retiring in 1978. She married Myrl N. Yeomans on June 16, 1940. Mrs. Yeomans was a long-time member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church and its Esther Circle. She was also a member of Bellevue Good Samaritans and the Chatter Club.
She is survived by her husband, Myrl of Bellevue; one daughter, Sharene Wilbur of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Barry Alan Yeomans.
Services were May 28 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, Bellevue, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue United Methodist Church.
