Jack Thornton
Jack E. Thornton, 66, of Bellevue, died Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 at Battle Creek Health System.
He was born Dec. 31, 1931 in Battle Creek the son of Ray and Orpha (Green) Thornton. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army in Korea from April 1951 to April 1957. He married Marilyn Augustine on July 1, 1951. He retired from Atwood Automotive in 1994. Previously, he worked at Fowler’s Implement, Bellevue Equipment Company and Snyder’s Gravel Pit. In retirement he delivered the Battle Creek Enquirer in the rural Marshall area for 4 ½ years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working with heavy equipment and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Angela Winters of Bellevue; three sons, Jack Douglas Thornton of Thereau, New Mexico, Dennis Thornton of Jackson and Mark Thornton of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Buster Thornton in 1969 and a granddaughter, Emily Thornton in 1982.
Services were held Dec. 8 at Shaw Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue United Methodist Church or the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Kenneth Thornton
Kenneth Thornton, 85, of Boerne, Texas, formerly of Olivet, died Sept. 10, 1998.
Mr. Thornton was born Nov. 12, 1912.
He is survived by one daughter, Connie Reid of Boerne, Texas; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ina Post and Joyce Barkley, both of Olivet.
Marilyn Thornton
Marilyn L. Thornton, 65, of Bellevue, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998 at Battle Creek Health System.
Mrs. Thornton was born Jan. 22, 1933 in Battle Creek to Harry and Margaret (Burkett) Augustine. She attended Bellevue High School and graduated from Corunna High School. She was employed by Battle Creek Motor Parts as an office manager for 19 years. She was previously employed by Church’s Grocery in Bellevue, which became Felpausch. She was an active member in the Bellevue Community, member of the PTA, taught sewing class for 4-H and a member of the American Business Women’s Association. She and her husband delivered the Battle Creek Enquirer in rural Marshall for 4 ½ years.
She married Jack Thornton on July 1, 1951. He died last Tuesday, Dec. 4, 1998.
Surviving are a daughter, Angela Winters of Bellevue; three sons, Jack Douglas Thornton of Thereau, New Mexico, Dennis Thornton of Jackson and Mark Thornton of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; father, Harry Augustine of Bellevue; and brothers, James Augustine of Bellevue and Jerold Augustine of Marshall.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a granddaughter, Emily Thornton in 1982; and her mother, Margaret Augustine in 1995.
Services were held Dec. 14 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue. Arrangements were made by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel.
Mary Elizabeth Thornton
Mary Elizabeth Thornton, 78, of Three Notch, Ala., formerly of Olivet, died April 22, 1998.
She is survived by her son, Ray (Becky) Thornton of Union Springs, Ala.; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, and son, John.
Graveside services were April 26 in Beale Eagle, Tenn.
John William Tiemeyer
John William Tiemeyer, 72, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 at Ingham Regional Medical Center. Tiemeyer was born Sept. 25, 1926 in Grand Rapids, the son of Peter and Ella (Byleveld) Tiemeyer.
He served in the infantry of the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Lansing Capital City Group. He married Bernice A. Visscher on July 30, 1946. They have been married for 52 years. Together they attended the Crossroads Church of the United Brethren in Charlotte. He was manager of White Haines Optical Company in Lansing.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice; six daughters, Judith Ann (Donald) Steenwyk of Zeeland, Joy Ellen Tiemeyer of Traverse City, Beth Jo (Terry) Jungel of Ionia, Kathy Jean (Ron) DeGroot of Sioux Center, Iowa, Nancy Kay (John) Garity of Eaton Rapids, Carol Lynn (Steven) DeJong of Holland; one son, John William (Katrina) Tiemeyer, Jr. of Mason; 19 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William Tiemeyer, of Grand Rapids and Bert Tiemeyer of Columbus, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marie Willemstein, Effie Bazan and Katherine Westra.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Marc Nelson officiating. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Floral View Cemetery in Jenison.
Visitation will be Thursday, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions

Helen M. Todd
Helen M. Todd, 89, of Nashville died Feb. 10, 1998, at Pennock Hospital in Hastings.
Mrs. Todd was born Nov. 7, 1908, in her parents home in Nashville, to Joseph A. and Mary Etta (Dean) Frith. She was a member of the Vermontville United Methodist Church; charter member of the Vermontville Historical Society; and championed handicapped education in Eaton County. She graduated in 1926 and then went to Bronson School of Nursing. She served as a nurse first at Masonic Home in Alma, then around Vermontville for many years. She married Robert L. Todd on Sept. 11, 1932.
She is survived by her brother, Fred Frith of Vermontville; husband, Robert; daughter, Ruth Ann; son, Richard (Louise) Todd; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were Feb. 13 at the Vermontville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Bowman officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Janet L. Vanderpoorten
Janet L. Vanderpoorten, 82, of Dearborn, formerly of the Olivet/Springport area died July 1, 1998, at the Garden City Hospital, Garden City, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Vanderpoorten was born in Springport, the daughter of Lewis E. and Pearl K. (Hill) Landon. She resided in the Detroit area since 1937.
She is survived by many friends and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen A. Vanderpoorten.
Private services have been held. Interment was in the Springport Cemetery, Springport. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Leader Dog School at Rochester, or the Michigan Humane Society.
George W. Velte
George W. Velte, 61, of Olivet, formerly of Middletown, Ohio, died April 6, 1998 at the Ingham Regional Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus, Lansing after a short illness.
Mr. Velte was born in Middletown, Ohio, the son of Hubert R. and Frances (Sharpf) Velte. He was a 1955 graduate of Middletown High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-59. He has been employed by the U.S. Postal Service having served as Postmaster of the Loveland, Ohio Post Office, retired after 34 years of service. He was currently serving as an Olivet City Councilman, serving as Board Chairman of E.A.T.R.A.N. and was a member of the Olivet Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Velte held memberships in the Kalamazoo Corvette Club, and Moose Lodge, the D.I.A. and was a retired past President of the Ohio Postmasters Association.
He is survived by three sons, Chad (Lyn) Velte of Franklin, Ohio, Derek (DaLisa) Velte of Snow Flake, Arizona and Craig (Elizabeth) Velte of Aurora, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one brother, David Velte of Dayton, Ohio; and dear friend, Becky Perry of Olivet.
Services were April 11 at the Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home in Middletown. Interment in the Woodside Cemetery, Middletown. Local arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
