Helen Mary Corbin
87 of Vermontville, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 in Hastings, Michigan. Mrs. Corbin was born July 3, 1916 in Burlington, Michigan, the daughter of Frank and E. Ruth (Philips) Conine. She worked for the Battle Creek Sanitarium, Percy Jones Hospital, NuMode Hosiery and Corbin Orthopedic Appliance. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Vermontville, and the Kalamo Order of the Eastern Star #399. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Bill) Mason of Vermontville, step-sons, Charles (Connie) Corbin and Robert (Sherri) Corbin, both of Battle Creek, 2 grandchildren, Tamira Lynne (Kurt) Mockridge and Rebecca Anne Mason (Barry Byington) great granddaughter, Kylynne Taneil Mockridge, brother Orval (Margaret) Conine of Delton and nephews Orval W. Conine and John A. Conine both of Delton. She was preceded in death by husbands Franklyn L. Richmond in 1957 and Paul H. Corbin in 1981. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2004 at the First Congregational Church of Vermontville, with Pastor Eric E. Lison officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Vermontville or the American Red Cross.
Iva L. Heinze
86, of Potterville, died Saturday, January 10, 2004. Mrs. Heinze was born June 10, 1917, in Kalkaska, Michigan, the daughter of Edwin and Ida (Miller) Mills. She married William L. Heinze who preceded her in death in 1972. Mr. and Mrs. Heinze owned and operated Heinze's Sinclair Service Station in Potterville for many years. Mrs. Heinze was a member of the Potterville United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women Group and had been the Benton Township Treasurer for over 17 years. She also had worked at Charlotte Auto Parts from 1967 to 1984. She is survived by her son, William (Nancy) Heinze, two daughters, Shirley (Frank) Wright and Barbara (Larry) Reed all of Potterville, 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and her sister, Reatha Loomis of Mt Morris. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Julia and, brothers, John, Russell, Orville, Ervin and Raymond Mills. Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Potterville United Methodist Church with Pastor Becky Morrison officiating. Interment will follow in Benton Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 - 9 p.m. Monday and 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Tuesday at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, Michigan. Helen Maxine Miller
81, of Potterville, Michigan, died Sunday, January 11, 2004. Mrs. Miller was born April 12, 1922, in Charlotte, Michigan the daughter of Silas and Bernice (Lyons) Dickerson. She worked as a stock person for Carl's Grocery Store in Potterville for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. Helen loved to knit, crochet and enjoyed working on crafts. She is survived by her husband Donald Miller, daughters Carole Brown of Woodland, Bonnie (Dwayne) Barber of Dimondale, 4 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, brother Jack (Betty) Dickerson of Eaton Rapids and half-brother Don (Sandy) Taylor of Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by grandson Andrew Schultz and sisters Norma White and Vivian Shotwell. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, Michigan with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be 3- 5 and 7 - 9 p.m. Monday at Pray Funeral Home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Nicolaas Oomen
78 of Charlotte, Michigan, died unexpectedly January 12, 2004. Mr. Oomen was born August 15, 1925 in The Netherlands, the son of Hendrikus and Arendje (Wieringa) Oomen. Mr. Oomen had worked for General Motors for 38 years, retiring in 1989. He farmed his entire life and was enjoyed by all who knew him. He is survived by 3 daughters, Marie A. and Wendy J. of Lansing, Alice Paula of Charlotte, and a sister in the Netherlands. He was preceded in death by his wife Paula (Keller) Oomen, December 26, 2003. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 15, 2004 at Pray Funeral Home with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment will be in West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday. Elizabeth A. Mellon
77, 'Betty' to her myriad friends, professional colleagues and family, passed away early morning on January 12, 2004, following a short illness. Betty was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 29, 1926, to Sherman H. and Hazel (Duncan) Palmer. A 1944 graduate of Rock Springs, Wyoming High School, she earned her BS degree (Home Economics) in 1948 at Iowa State University. Her further studies included a fellowship at Merrill Palmer Institute (BS in early childhood education 1949) and MA, Michigan State University (family and child services/special education, 1967). In spite of suffering a devastating early adult polio attack and continuing post polio syndrome resulting in a long time struggle with personal health, she retained an exceptionally keen and active sense of humor. She was an avid and dedicated children's advocate, serving the Girl Scout movement, for some 25 years, active in early childhood education, cooperative nursery schools (a founding member of Charlotte's Cooperative Nursery School) general education early elementary teaching (1st grade), special education/consulting, and teaching hospital/homebound and learning disabled children. She devoted a total of 28 years in special education as teacher and consultant, retiring after serving as one of Michigan's initially trained and designated Special Education Curriculum Resource Consultants (Eaton Intermediate School District). Throughout her adult years, she developed an active and studied interest in 'antiquing', with a special interest and study of miniature antique dolls and collecting glass figurines. She long held active memberships in the Eaton Antique Club and the Greater Lansing Area Doll Club. Other professional associations (educational) included the Michigan and National Education Associations (MEA/NEA) included also as a retiree. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, William E. Mellon, sister Deon Palmer Smith (Wyoming), son Martin S. Wilcox (New Mexico), daughter Mary Wilcox Whitson (Maryville, TN), Douglas Whitson (son-in-law, Maryville, TN), Sylvia Dawson, (daughter-in-law Bernalillo, New Mexico) and grandchildren, Christopher B. Wilcox (Ann Arbor), Cayenne Wilcox (Flint), Robyn and Hannah Wilcox (Bernalillo, New Mexico), Caleb (Melia) Whitson (Knoxville, Tennessee), Jared Whitson, Isaac (Emily) Whitson and Ezra White (Nashville, Tennessee), Levi, Abigail and Naomi Whitson (Maryville, Tennessee), Lara (Troy) Hudson (Aurora, Colorado) and great-grandchildren, Olivia R. and Ian C. Whitson (Knoxville, Tennessee). A memorial will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 201 W. Shepherd, Charlotte, Michigan, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004. The Reverend Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte or to the Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte in Betty's name.
Naomi Margaret Raven
90, of Grandville, Michigan, died January 14, 2004. Mrs. Raven was born January 23, 1913, in Gypsum, Iowa, the daughter of William and Maggie (Watt) Bashford. She is survived by daughter Rhea (Jim) Ferrier of Nashville, Michigan, son Peter (Brigitte) Raven of Greenfield, Indiana, 7 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Dimple Raven, Lorna Raven, Mary Bashford of Iowa, Betty Bashford of Kansas, brother-in-law Walter Raven of Iowa, and former sister-in-law Char Raven of Michigan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred Raven in 1987, sister Laura Gutherie, and six brothers, Jim, Mac, Bill, Gene, Vern and Frank. Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, Michigan with Pastor Michael Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Belding, Michigan.
Marshall Barnard
62 of Charlotte, Michigan, died Wednesday, January 14, 2004. Mr. Barnard was born April 19, 1941 in Fowlerville, Michigan, the son of Harry L. and Irene May (Blair) Barnard. He was a lift truck operator at Motor Wheel. He loved the old sitcoms, Eagle community dinners and enjoyed his friendships. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly (Jeff) Hale of Ionia, step-son Kenneth (Cindy) Blanchard of Charlotte, sisters Marie Wilson of Charlotte, Norlene (David) Esterline of Cambria, brother Alden Barnard of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois Barnard, parents, brothers Harry, Darwin, Dean and sisters Dorene and Barbara. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2004 at Five Corners Church with Pastor Marten Saunders officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Monday until time of service.
Cathryn Louise Crozier
47, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Thursday, January 15, 2004. Mrs. Crozier was a Property Administrator for Independent Village. She was a member of the Ladies of Harley and loved deer hunting and fishing ever since her grandfather taught her. She was also a founding member of Abundant Life Fellowship Ministries of Nashville. Mrs. Crozier was born February 21, 1956, Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Roland 'Sonny' Brown and Pat (Fred) Zangmeister, who survive. She is also survived by her husband Bill Crozier, stepdaughters Lisa (Russell) Green of Bellevue, Laura (Mike) Fuller of Charlotte, Angela Cuff of Charlotte, 12 step-grandchildren, 1 great step-grandchild, sisters Debbie (John) Ward, Denise (Bob) Bishop, Sherry (David) Buis, Kitty (Gordy) Smith, Laura (Steve) Ballinger, Kim Swissler, Dee Brown, brothers Lenny (Betty) Hiatt, Gary Hiatt, Steven Brown, Kevin (Kathy) Brown, Doug (Brenda) Brown, step-brother Rocky Graham, step-father Len Hiatt of Bath, mother-in-law Genevieve Crozier, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. 85, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Sunday, January 18, 2004. Mrs. Cole was born April 23, 1918, in Mason, MI, the daughter of Vern and Vera Bell (Fetterman) Briggs. She worked at Owens-Illinois as a cavity checker until her retirement in 1980. Thelma was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and O-I B-liners Club. She is survived by sons, Gary (Ruth) Cole, Bark River, MI, Richard (Lily) Cole, Holt, MI, Carroll (Kay) Cole, Charlotte, MI, daughter, Tanis Parks, Pueblo, CO, 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, sister, Shirley VanLoten, Charlotte, brother-in-law, Maurice Cole, Charlotte. 72, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Sunday, January 18, 2004. Mrs. Vance was born June 14, 1931, in Lorrie, West Virginia, the daughter of Carlin and Sudah (Gillenwaters) Kessinger. Mrs. Vance was a member of the Eagles of McArthur, Ohio. She is survived by son William (Sue) Vance of Bellevue, daughters Terri (Joe) Jenson of Charlotte, Brenda (Chuck) Tomlinson of Charlotte, Rita Poyer of Bellevue, Chris (Steve) Morris of Charlotte, Sue Vance (Pat Pung) of Dimondale, 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, sisters Carnella Adkins, June Morgan, Mary Atzec, Geraldine Thomason, Wanda Taylor and Jean Herner. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Clarence Vance in 2001, brothers Joe Kessinger, Michael Kessinger, sister Goldie Smith, son-in-law Brian Poyer. Terry B. Mullins
50, of Charlotte, Michigan, died Friday, January 23, 2004. Mr. Mullins was born September 30, 1953 in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of Bee and Louise (Gabbard) Mullins. Terry was a former Marine recruiter. He was a member of the Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3552. He is survived by sons Jason Mullins of Sunfield and Richard Mullins of Detroit, and two grandchildren and many friends. Thelma Irene Gibbs
79 of Charlotte, died Saturday, January 31, 2004 at her residence. Mrs. Gibbs was born February 18, 1924in Albion, Michigan, the daughter of Harold C. and Mayta Wixson. She was a member of St. John Episcopal Church where she was Past President of the Alter Guild and Past President of the E.C.W. Thelma was also an LPN and a Gold Star Mother. She also held membership in the VFW Post 2406 Ladies Auxiliary and was Past President and Past Noble Grand of the Rebekahs Lodge. She is survived by sons Thomas (Sandy) Wixson, Patrick H. Gibbs and Michael L. Gibbs of Charlotte, brother Irwin 'Bud' Wixson of Albion, sister Ferna Weir of Killeen, Texas and friend Ernest Calvin. She was preceded in death by her husband Patrick Gibbs in 1966, son Kitchell S. Gibbs in 1969 in Vietnam, sisters Leta Andrews and Joan Broxholm, brothers Charles and Edward Wixson and two Grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Fr. Robert Walton officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Aiden was born Tuesday, February 3, 2004, the son of Curtis and Amanda McLendon. He is survived by 2 sisters, Michaela Maree Stahl, Faith Kathryn McLendon of Charlotte, grandparents, Michael & Alana Stahl of Charlotte, Sally Stahl of Eaton Rapids, Karen McLendon of Potterville and Rex McLendon of Charlotte. Julius Jay Michael, Jr.
82 of Lansing, died Saturday, February 07, 2004. Mr. Michael was born September 13, 1921 in Brookfield Township, Michigan, the son of Julius Jay and Elizabeth (Toogood) Michael. Mr. Michael was a World War II veteran and a diemaker at Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte, retiring in 1985 after 21 years. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lansing. He is survived by sons Gary Michael of Olivet, MI, Douglas (Helen) Michael of Olivet, MI, Gerald (Dianne) Michael of Ocqueoc, MI., James (Jean) Michael of Evart, MI, daughter Marilyn (Niles) Beardslee of Arizona, 14 grandchildren, many great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dimondale, MI., with Rev. Jim Mort officiating.
