Kathlyn E. “Kay” Swain
Kathlyn E. “Kay” Swain, 74, of Lansing passed away March 12, 1998.
Mrs. Swain was born April 12, 1923 in Holt and has been a resident of the area most of her life. She was a member of the Wacousta Chapter #133, O.E.S.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Clair; three daughters, Ruth Benninger of Portland, Marilyn Sutliff of Portland, and Diane (Steve) Wytkewicz of Sarasota, Fla.; five stepchildren, Ruth Ann (Bob) McKeon of Dimondale, Steve Swain of Olivet, Bill Elliott of Olivet, Nancy Jenks of Mason, and David (Kathy) Swain of Martinsburg, W.V.; 15 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Shirley Benninger and Jayne Jones both of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Bruce Jones; and her first husband, David Benninger.
Services were March 16 at the Estes-Leadley Holt/Delhi Chapel, with the Rev. M.E. Walworth, Jr. Interment was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Lansing, American Cancer Society, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
Sanford H. Swanson
Sanford Houston Swanson, 66, of Potterville, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at his home.
Mr. Swanson was born Jan. 30, 1932, in Switzerland County, Ind., the son of Jonas and Helen (White) Swanson. He married Alice Hammons Oct. 31, 1955. He was an Army paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and then worked at Exhibit and Display for Oldsmobile for 36 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 237 in Lansing.
Mr. Swanson is survived by his wife, Alice; daughters, Sandy (Jay) Holmes and Cindy (Scott) LaFave, both of Potterville; son, Steve Swanson of Naperville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Jake LaFave, Matt LaFave and Alexandra Holmes; three sisters, Shirley (William) Cook of E. Enterprise, Ind., Ramona (Roy) Titkeyener of Hamilton, Ohio, and Sharon (Doug) Harlow of Bear Branch, Ind.; three brothers, Carroll (Daisy) Swanson of Bennington, Ind., Miles Swanson and Kenneth (Irene) Swanson, both of Rising Sun, Ind.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry, and a sister, Gloria.
Funeral services were Monday, June 15, at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Thomas Peters officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Potterville Community Playground Project.
Clifton Simpson Swift
Clifton Simpson Swift, age 91, died August 2, 1998, in a Bradenton, Florida hospital. Mr. Swift was formerly of Mason. He was born January 14, 1907, to Cortz and Philena Swift in rural Ingham County. He retired from Motor Wheel in 1972 after 37 years. He also tended his 160-acre farm in rural Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 57 years, Florence (Kime); and two grandchildren, Cheryl Swift and Craig Swift; three brothers and a sister, Charles, Cleo, Clair and Hattie.
He is survived by eight children, James (Lila) Swift of Leslie, Barbara Rodocker of Sarasota, Treva Canfield of Clearwater, Ivan (Gail) Swift of Alabama, Forest (Linda) Swift of Dayton, Eleanore Rossow of Bradenton, Ruth (Mike) Johnson of Flushing, Charlene (Andy) McCallum of Okemos; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
The family is being served by Skinner Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6, at 2 p.m. at the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church with interment in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home.
Sharon Ann Talbot
Sharon Ann Talbot of Okemos, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 51, died Wednesday, July 1, 1998, in Lansing. Sharon was born December 15, 1946, in Stanwood, MI, the daughter of Merle and Dorothy (Darling) Williams, her adopted parents were Durwood and Gladys (Oberlin) Pierson. She was a member of the Springport VFW Post. Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Talbot.
Surviving are her daughter, Melissa (Larry) Browers of Okemos; brother, Oscar (Bertine) Pierson of Eaton Rapids; sister, Nancy Harrington of Mt. Morris; 3 brothers-in-law, Bob (Delynn) Talbot of Eaton Rapids, Jay (Janice) Talbot and Tony Talbot, all of Springport; sister-in-law, Janet (Junior) Risner of Ohio.
Memorial graveside services will be held on Thursday, July 9, 1998, at 11:00 a.m. at the Springport Cemetery with Rev. Bob Donner officiating. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
George H. Taylor
George H. Taylor, 72, of Athens died Jan. 8, 1998, as the result of a highway accident.
Mr. Taylor was born June 5, 1925, in Charlotte, the son of Freeman and Bell (Cook) Taylor. He joined the Army Sept. 26, 1946, and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Ken., and in Japan. When discharged, he went to Flint and worked for General Motors, he moved to Athens. He attended the Seventh/Day Adventist Church in Burlington.
He is survived by two daughters, Laura Taylor of Mesa, Ariz., and Sharon Ansett of Lapeer; four sons, George Taylor of Burton, David Main and Arthur Main, both of Grand Blanc; and Michael Taylor, stationed in Germany; and one sister, Melvina (Don) Wolodko of Grand Ledge.
Services and military honors were Jan. 15 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with the Rev. Delmer Case officiating. Arrangements were made by the Spencer Funeral Home, Athens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the George Taylor Memorial Fund.
Naomi Taylor
Naomi Taylor, 69, of Escanaba died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 of a heart attack in Valdosta, GA, while driving to her retirement home in Florida. She was born Oct. 6, 1929 in Detroit, the daughter of the late attorney Alger W. Strom and the former Helen Lempio.
As a child she grew up in Gladstone. She graduated from Gladstone High School in 1947 as valedictorian. She married Albert E. Taylor on Aug. 6, 1949 and moved to Escanaba where they have since resided and raised their three children. For the past seven years she and her husband have wintered in Florida. In her early years of her marriage she worked at the Delta Hardware and also for Citizens Mutual Insurance Co.
She was a member of the St. Patrick Church of Escanaba, the Escanaba Country Club, the Elks Auxiliary and an avid bridge player and golfer.
She is survived by her husband, Al; one son, Gary (Margaret) Taylor of Charlotte; two daughters, Lori (Dr. Helmut Jungschaffer) Taylor of Oberlin, OH, and Gail Taylor of Salinas, CA; one brother, Alger H. (Mary) Strom of Gladstone; one sister, Tina (Richard) L’Heureux of Sun city Center, Florida; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Oct. 23, 1998 at the Skradski-Boyce Funeral Home in Escanaba with Fr. Ron Skufca officiating. Entombment was in Gardens of Rest Mausoleum.
Memorial should be directed to the Order of Saint Francis, Bay de Noc Hospice at 3401 Ludington Street, Escanaba, MI 49829.
Cheryl C. Tewksbury
Cheryl C. (Savage) Tewksbury, 50, of Comstock Park, died March 3, 1998 at her home.
Mrs. Tewksbury was a member of the Honda Riders and the Gold Wing Road riders Association.
She is survived by her husband, Darwin Tewksbury; two daughters, Rebecca Savage and Carrie Savage, both of Charlotte; one son, Philip (Christine) Savage of Lake Odessa; three stepchildren, Patty, Lorrie, and Mike; six grandchildren; two sisters, Karen (Skip) Dowding of Springport and Sue (Larry) Mead of Mulliken; and one brother, Mark (Gloria) Norris of Pensacola, Fla.
Services were March 6 at the Reyers North Valley Chapel. Interment was in Fairplains Cemetery, Grand Rapids.
Grace Thomas
Grace H. Thomas, 84, of Olivet, died Friday, Sept. 4, 1998.
Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 21, 1913, in Eaton County, the daughter of Ira and Vera (Rolfe) Halsey. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church; charter member of the Garden Club of Charlotte; and had volunteered at the Oak Chest in Olivet.
She is survived by three sons, Harry (Connie) of Grand Ledge, R. Jerry (Sue) of Eastpointe, and John A. (Corky) of Virginia; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine sisters, Luella Wonser of Eaton Rapids, Mary Hosey of Olivet, Gladys Thomas of Mountain Home, Tenn., Edith Hutchinson, Vera Bracy, Ola (Joel) Burnett, and Ila Burnett, all of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Rena Halsey of Charlotte; and three brothers, Floyd (Shirley) Halsey of Charlotte, Robert (Peg) Halsey of Vermontville, and Dean (Dorothy) Halsey of Ft. Pierce, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, in 1992.
Services were Sept. 8 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating. Interment was in Perry Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Congregational Church.
William E. Thompson
William E. Thompson, 63, of Antonia, MO, died Jan. 9, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Thompson was born Oct. 28, 1934, in Kalamo Township, the son of Everett Allan and Eva Thompson. He attended Charlotte Public Schools. He was a self-employed craftsman, manufacturing muzzleloaders, and Mr. Thompson was an outdoor enthusiast.
He is survived by his former wife of 21 years, Joan; two daughters, Tina (Wes) Thompson of Delton and Amy (Mark) Young of Charlotte; three sons, Terry (Robin) of Arnold, MO, Jerry (Becky) of Odessa, Texas, and James of Antonio, MO; one sister, Mary Lou (Kevin) Eddington of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and one son, William.
Cremation has taken place in Missouri. Services will be held at a later date.
