Marian L. Sours
Marian L. Sours, 84, of Olivet died May 21, 1998 at the Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, Charlotte.
Mrs. Sours was born in Battle Creek, the daughter of Don G. and Mabel (Day) Smith. She had been an Olivet resident since 1939 coming from Battle Creek. She was a 1932 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Mrs. Sours was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church and its Amy Storr-Emma Circle, 50-year member of the Olivet-Bellevue O.E.S., Charlotteers and the Moving Monkeys Camping Clubs and attended the Olivet Senior Citizens meetings.
She is survived by daughters, Sharlot A. Sours of Nashville, and Linda (Harley) Krauss of Olivet; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elliott F. Sours; one grandson, Douglas Krauss; two sisters, Dorothy Latta, and Doris Gibbs; and one brother, C. Chester Smith.
Services were May 25 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Clark A. Hock officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Tri-County Office on Aging or the charity of one’s choice.
Edward C. Stankiewicz
Edward C. Stankiewicz, age 73, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Friday, July 31, 1998. Mr. Stankiewicz served as a Sergeant with the 84th Infantry Division Railsplitters during World War II and had fought at the Battle of the Bulge. A University of Michigan graduate class of 1950, he was a retired salesman from Clarke Equipment Co., a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids, a charter member of Knights of Columbus and a Past Grand Knight in Eaton Rapids.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Patricia of London, England and son, Daniel of Lake Orion, MI; 2 sisters, Betty VanderLaan and Barbara (Kelly) Butler all of Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be held today, August 4th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Church. A Rosary was recited Monday evening at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Military Honors will be provided at the gravesite at Holy Cross Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
Lance Stanton
Lance E. “Pete” Stanton, 56, of Potterville died Nov. 15, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital.
Mr. Stanton was born in Charlotte, the son of Clare and Betty (Beals) Stanton. He worked on production at Coffax Manufacturing Co.
He is survived by a companion, Linda Coger; daughter, Kimberly (Lynn) Glasslee of Bellevue; son, Patrick Stanton of Westland; three grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Stanton of Charlotte.
Services were held Nov. 18 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor David Kobliska officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Pearl M. Staup
Pearl M. Staup, 79, of Nashville died Aug. 8, 1998, at Pennock Hospital, Hastings.
Mrs. Staup was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Nashville, the daughter of Philip and Gertrude (DeLile) Penfold. She was employed at Nashville Stamping Company, the Barry County Medical Facility, and the Hastings Provincial House. She married LeRoy Staup. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Nashville and attended the Nashville Baptist Church. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and was an excellent cook.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Steve) Jones of Charlotte; stepson, Bob Staup of Ohio; two granddaughters; and several step grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; stepson, Paul Staup; four sisters, Lucille Hill, Velva Bitgood, Ruby Kane, and Halley Penfold; and brother, Glen Penfold.
Services were Aug. 11 at the Maple Valley Chapel, Nashville. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville.

Harold L. “Bud” Stoughton
Harold L. “Bud” Stoughton, 73, of Midland, died Monday, August 10, 1998 at his home. He was born June 15, 1925 in Gull Lake Saskashewan to the late Floyd and Bessie (Hill) Stoughton. He married the former Barbara Almstead Burhans in Eaton Rapids on September 15, 1973. Mr. Stoughton attended Paw Paw schools and later graduated from the School of Pharmacy at Ferris State University. He was a practicing pharmacist for over 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII. He was a founding member and past president of the Eaton Rapids Little Theatre where he was also an actor and director. He enjoyed spending time at the David Russell Senior Citizens Center at the Community Center and was an avid outdoorsman and naturalist.
Mr. Stoughton is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Julie Stoughton of Pontiac and Mark A. Stoughton of Pensacola, Fla.; stepchildren, Bronwen (James) McKenzie of Boston, Mass., Clinton S. Burhans, III of Detroit, Michael R. Burhans and fiancé Michelle of Midland, and Jeffrey L. Burhans of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elwin, Wayne, and Roy Stoughton. He will be missed by many treasured friends.
A memorial service was held Thursday, August 13, at the Smith-Miner Funeral Home with Rev. G. Charles Ball of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was in the Midland Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider Mid-Michigan Hospice.
Harold W. Strank
Harold W. Strank, age 80, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, August 9, 1998 at a Lansing nursing home. He was born May 18, 1918 in Lansing, the son of Herbert and Gladys (Markley) Strank. Mr. Strank was an Army Infantry Veteran of World War II receiving the Purple Heart. He was retired from Causie Construction Co. and a retired farmer. At one time he owned and operated a roofing company in Ferndale, MI. Mr. Strank was a member of the Lansing Disabled American Veterans. Preceding him in death were his wife, Emily in 1993; son, Kenneth and half sister, Eleanore Damren.
Surviving are his 3 children, Fredrick Strank of Eaton Rapids, Virginia (Robert) Hurd of Eaton Rapids and Patricia Strank of Charlotte; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Wendell Strank of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 12, at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Plains Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids.
Jarrett Stubblefield
Jarrett “Red” Stubblefield, 70, of Roscommon, formerly of Potterville died Nov. 29, 1998.
Mr. Stubblefield was born April 6, 1928, in Union City, Tenn., the son of Thomas and Martha (Littrel) Stubblefield. He worked for Fisher Body in Lansing for 30 years before retiring in 1983. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and member of Grayling Moose Lodge #1162.
He is survived by his wife, Mae (Pierce); one daughter, Sharon (Bill) Christiansen of Potterville; one daughter-in-law, Linda Stubblefield; grandchildren, Angie (Marc) Gonzales, Ryan (Brandi) Stubblefield, Melissa Stubblefield, Bill and Cheri Christiansen; and great-grandchildren, Morgan and Marissa Gonzales, and Zakary and Breanna Stubblefield; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Tom in March 1996.
Services were Dec. 2 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Eleanore I. Sulpher
Eleanore I. Sulpher, age 75, died Saturday, December 19, 1998 in Lansing. Eleanore was born June 22, 1923 in Cadillac the daughter of John Forrest and Frances Amelia Christina (Foreman) Oliver. Mrs. Sulpher retired as a secretary for the Lansing School District in 1997 after 22 years of service. She was an avid gardener and reader. Eleanore enjoyed walking, needlework and baking. Preceding her in death were her husband of 56 years, Richard R., in 1998 and her sister, Dorothy Bennett.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Jayne (Bill) Krawczynski of Harrison, Barbara (Alan) Herman of Lansing; 2 sons, Dennis (Neva) Sulpher, Jack D. (Betty Jo) Sulpher all of Eaton Rapids; 8 grandchildren, Conor, Amanda, Richard, and Elizabeth Sulpher, Andrew and Jason Krawczynski, Samuel and Anna Marie Herman; brother, Floyd “Bud” (Ann) Oliver of CA; sister, Karen (Michael) Waterman of Commerce; and special niece and nephew, Autumn and Matthew Waterman.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 22, 1998, noon, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home one hour prior to service time. Those desiring may make contributions to either the American Cancer Society or to the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Eleanore J. Sulpher.
Clarence Sumner
Clarence “CJ”, “Jerry” Sumner, 91, of Eaton Rapids died Feb. 12, 1998 in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Sumner was born June 20, 1906 in Darien Center, NY, the son of Jerome and Clara E. (Hutchinson) Sumner. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Charlotte. He was a graduate of the Union Springs Academy in New York and the Atlantic Union College in Mass. Mr. Sumner worked 44 years for various state conferences of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and retired as an Assistant Treasurer of the Michigan Conference. He was co-owner, with his wife, of Story Book House and Story Book Acres in Eaton Rapids for 35 years.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Millie B.; two daughters, Miladean (Ben) Leifermann of Florida and Lorene (Larry) Henderson of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Sumner, Iva Furnival and Olive Walling.
Services were Feb. 15 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church with the Pastor Larry Yeagley officiating. Interment followed in Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family was served by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
