Dolores M. Smallwood
Dolores May Smallwood, 98, of Charlotte died Aug. 21, 1998, at the Marshall Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Smallwood was born May 20, 1900, in Gladwin, the daughter of Lewis and Sarah (Brown) VanValkenburg. She married Charles Smallwood in 1926.
She graduated from Central Michigan University and taught second grade at Washington and Froebel Schools in Charlotte for 35 years. She had been President of the Charlotte Library Board; charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma; member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and Ruth Circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Straight and Carolyn (Jack) Hazel, both of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in Nov. 1997.
Funeral services were held August 25, 1998 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Flemming officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Public Library or Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
Arlington Harvey Smith
Arlington Harvey Smith, 90, of Holiday, Fla., formerly of Nashville, died March 12, 1998.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 16, 1907, in Kalamo Township, the son of Daniel and Etta (VanVleet) Smith. He married Frances Beryl Suggate on June 23, 1944. He owned and operated a mechanic shop in Vermontville for many years before going to work for Standard Oil. He also had a welding shop on his farm. Mr. Smith was a member of the Moose Lodge #288 in Lansing.
He is survived by two daughters, Arloa L. Gallup of Hastings, and Arlene (Richard) Bradley of Holiday, Fla.; two sons, Arlie (Emogene) Smith of Barton City, and Tom (Janet) Dupuis of Hastings; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one great-great-great-granddaughter; three sisters, Julie (Lyle) Buxton of Charlotte, Hazel Ainsley of Holt, and Bessie (Howard) Glossip of Grand Ledge; and one brother, Raymond Smith of Holiday, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances.
Services were March 16 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Dr. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in Kalamo Cemetery.

Hazel L. Smith
Hazel L. Smith, 93, of Charlotte died March 14, 1998.
Mrs. Smith was born April 12, 1905 in Seneca County, Ohio to John and Bertha Walters. She lived in Eaton County most of her life. She was a member of West Carmel Congregational Church.
She is survived by one son, Roger L. (LaRae) Smith of Charlotte; one grandson; one granddaughter; one step-granddaughter; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Zenith Edwards of Clifford Lake, and Inez (Donald) Shrontz of Lake Odessa; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cloman O. Smith; and one brother, Stanley E. Walters.
Services were March 17 at the Maple Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Carmel Congregational Church.
Louise Y. Smith
Louise Y. Smith died December 23, 1998 at her home in Naples, Florida, attended by her husband of 43 years, Charles J. Smith and her daughters, Annette Miller Williams of Santa Fe, NM and Sara Louise Miller of North Salem, NY. She was born Sarah Louise Young in Charlotte, the daughter of Mary and Bertrand Young. Louise was a violinist with a Bachelor of Music from Olivet College, Class of 1929. She was the mother of 3, Annette and Sara (who survive) and Chalmers (who died in 1940) and the widow of Charles D. Miller of Eaton Rapids who died in 1946.
Louise’s life is celebrated by her husband, Charles J.; daughters; her stepson, Charles J. Smith, Jr. and 5 grandchildren, Heather, Dennis and Eric Williams, Andrew and Lynnette Smith.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 28, 1998 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans of the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Thelma I. Smith
Thelma I. Smith, 82, of Charlotte, died July 25, 1998.
Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 23, 1915 in Midland, the daughter of Thomas and Ethel (Southham) Parks. Thelma was a retired custodian for Owens-Illinois in Charlotte.
She is survived by a son, Harry (Marlene) Smith of Charlotte; grandchildren, Del (Suzy) Smith of Connecticut, Dayton (Joan) Smith of Battle Creek, Dane Smith of Charlotte, and Kelly Wicker of New Jersey; a brother, Wilbur Parks; and a sister, Mary Sly, both of Midland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Smith in 1982.
Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Wilene R. Smith
Wilene R. Smith, 70, of Charlotte died June 9, 1998 in Battle Creek.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 1, 1927, in Eaton County, the daughter of Orlo and Amanda (Chase) Haun. She married Leland F. Smith in 1947. She and her husband had a poultry business for 14 years. She was a teacher’s aide in Charlotte for 10 years. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte.
She is survived by her husband, Leland; one daughter, Margaret (Loren) Dingman of St. Ignace; two sons, Randy (Claudine) Smith of Battle Creek and Richard (Christine) Smith of Nashville; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Lloyd B. Haun of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Susan Ruth; and two brothers, Leland D. Haun and Forrest G. Haun.
Services were June 12 at the First Baptist Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in Bosworth Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Lance R. Sobleskey
Lance Raymond Sobleskey, 10, of Nashville died Sept. 30, 1998.
Lance was born May 5, 1988, in Lansing, the son of Paul and Lou (Sebolt) Sobleskey. He attended Kellogg Elementary School in Nashville and was a fourth grade Lions nose guard and tight end with the Maple Valley Youth Football League.
He is survived by his father, Paul (Jackie) of Nashville; his mother, Lou Sobleskey of Holt; two sisters, Courtney and Blair of Holt; a twin brother, Ryan of Nashville; grandparents, Joann (Almon) Sebolt, Ellen Sobleskey, and Richard (Elaine) Sobleskey, all of Charlotte; his great-grandmother, Alta Hamilton of Nashville; 10 aunts and uncles; and 23 cousins.
Services were Oct. 3 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Rob VanEngen officiating. Interment was in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Dimondale.
Lorna L. Soule
Lorna L. Soule went to be with the Lord on December 2, 1998. Lorna was born in Dike, IA, and was a resident of Eaton Rapids for many years. Most recently, Lorna was a resident at St. Lawrence Dimondale Center. She was very active in Theater when she was younger. Lorna had a strong faith in the Lord, which had sustained her through her life, and was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She will be missed for her love of children and her sense of humor.
She is survived by her four children, Betty Wilson, Jon C. Murray, Ronald L. (Diana) Soule, and Donald L. (Paulette) Soule; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Lorna is also survived by her sister, Lois Krillenberger and brother, Don (Bea) Cook.
A service of Celebration and Victory in Christ was conducted Saturday, December 5, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, with Roger Niekerk, Lay Minister, officiating. Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason. Friends were received at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Ball-Dunn Chapel on Friday. Linda A. Slayton
Linda A. Slayton, age 46, passed away Sunday, October 4, 1998 the victim of Systemic Lupus, the prescription drugs used to treat it and depression. She was born October 3, 1952 in Flint. Linda was devoted to her children and family. She was a kind, gentle, loving person. Linda loved children and thoroughly enjoyed teaching reading at the Weymouth Elementary School in Charlotte, working with first, second and third grades. She was a beautiful, quiet, shy, gracious, loving wife, mother, and friend to many. Through God’s mercy, Linda now resides in Heaven. Mrs. Slayton was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Other memberships include the Michigan Reading Teachers Association, Michigan Lupus Association and Phi Kappa Phi. She was preceded in death by her brother, Don Palmer.
Surviving are her husband, Ken; son, James; 2 daughters, Barbara and Kendra; parents, Robert and Alice Palmer of Sheridan, WY; brother, James (Marilyn) Palmer of SC; and sister, Susan (Dan) Spencer of Syracuse, NY.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 8, at 1 p.m. at the Robbins United Methodist Church, 6419 W. Bunker Road, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty Debow officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to either the Robbins Education Memorial or to the Michigan Lupus Association in memory of Linda Slayton.
