Hayden C. “Sammy” Samson
Hayden C. “Sammy” Samson, 84, of Olivet died March 9, at Battle Creek Health Systems Community Site after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Samson was born Oct. 28, 1913 in Marshall, the son of Harry and Blanch (Boughton) Samson. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1934. He has lived in Olivet the past 49 years. He worked on several Calhoun County area farms as a farm hand after high school. He worked at Kellogg Company in Battle Creek. Mr. Samson attended the Ainger Bible Church. He married Donna L. Strasel Sept. 4, 1943 in Marshall.
He is survived b y his daughter, Sue Beebe of Battle Creek; one son, Sam (Vikki) Samson of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Thomas, Mildred McLain, and Evelyn Hamilton all of Marshall; and nieces and nephews.
Services were March 12 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Marshall, with Pastor Scott Brood officiating. Interment followed in Rice Creek Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ainger Bible Church.
Helen L. Sanders
Helen L. Sanders, 74, of Charlotte died Dec. 28, 1997, at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus, Lansing, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Sanders was born in Eagle, the daughter of Vern and Carrie (Wilcut) Groh. She had been a Charlotte resident for 56 years, coming from Portland.
She is survived by two sons, Scott and Ryan, both of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy Groh of Arizona and Earl Groh of Sunset Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard.
Graveside services will be held later at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Michael David Sanders
Michael David Sanders, 34, of Charlotte died July 24, 1998 at the University of Michigan Hospital of Ann Arbor.
Mr. Sanders was born April 27, 1964 in Charlotte the son of David M. and Marcella M. (Leik) Sanders. He was a factory line worker.
He is survived by his mother, Marcella Sanders; sister, Rebecca Malerba of Charlotte; a brother, Mitchell Sanders of Baldwin; grandmother, Dorothy Leik of Portland; two nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, David M. Sanders.
Services were July 27 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Berton A. Shultz
Berton A. Shultz, 87, of Augusta died March 25, 1998 at his home.
Mr. Shultz was born Jan. 7, 1911 in Lee Township, the son of Simon and Tina (Sanders) Shultz. Before serving in World War II, he was employed by the Battle Creek Police Department as an investigative and motorcycle officer. He was a builder and inspector in the construction business, retiring in 1969. He was also a partner with Ben White at Kalamazoo Implement Co. He married Nora Ada Hunt on July 13, 1964.
She is survived by his wife, Nora; son, Clifton (Susan) Shultz of Schoolcraft; one grandson; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Clifton K. Shultz of Battle Creek.
Services were March 28 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Father Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Kalamazoo.
Florence E. Siegel
Florence E. Siegel of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Lansing, died April 25, 1998 at the age of 93. Mrs. Siegel was born January 7, 1905 in Webberville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard P. in 1971; grandson, Douglas Gehrholz in 1992; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Colleen (Jack) Webb of Eaton Rapids and Jackie (Richard) Caughey of Muskegon; 1 son, Keith (Helen) Siegel of Florida; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and 1 sister.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, April 30, 1998 at the Church of the Resurrection, Lansing, with Rev. William J. Koenigsknecht, Pastor, officiating. The Rite of Committal was held in Deepdale Memorial Park. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 416 Frandor, Suite 104, Lansing, 48912, or Eaton Community Hospice, 313 Lansing Rd., Charlotte, 48813, in memory of Mrs. Siegel. The family was served by Gorsline-Runciman Co. Lansing Chapel.
Sandra A. Simmons
Sandra (Sandy) A. Simmons, 63, of Olivet, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998.
Mrs. Simmons was born Oct. 24, 1934, in Ann Arbor, Mich., to William and Alta (Nixon) Taylor. She was a member of the West Carmel Congregational Church, Charlotte.
She enjoyed bowling and was a member of the Women’s Bowling Association. She collected stuffed animals as a hobby.
She is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Sherry Halsey of Eaton Rapids, Jackie Simmons and Brenda (Jack) Hopkins, both of Olivet; and Kim Simmons of Howell; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brother, Rick Taylor of Florida; sisters, Ellen English of Battle Creek and Deborah Kesson of Lansing.
A memorial service was Tuesday, Feb. 17, at West Carmel Congregational Church with the Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Pray Funeral Home handled arrangements.
Matthew R. Slaght
Matthew R. Slaght, age 30, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, May 3, 1998, as the result of an automobile accident. Matt was born November 24, 1967 in Eaton Rapids. He was a night supervisor at Fasco in Eaton Rapids, an avid hunter and NASCAR race fan.
Surviving is his wife of 5 years, Teresa Lynn (Williams) Slaght. He was a wonderful father to his son, Thaddeus Matthew Slaght, age 20 months and daughter, Alisha LeAnn Wyman, age 12 years of Mason. Also surviving are his parents, Thaddeus “Butch” (Joanna) Slaght of Mason and Brenda Elston of Eaton Rapids; 3 grandmothers, Thelma Slaght, Hilda Elston both of Charlotte, Flora Baca of CO; mother-in-law, Nancy Williams of Eaton Rapids; 3 brothers, Kevin Slaght of Parma, Mark Slaght of Houghton Lake, Chad Elston of Mason; 3 sisters, Kimberly (Bill) French, Bonnie Wright, Christina Greenshield, all of Eaton Rapids; 1 brother-in-law, Jim (Carol) Williams of Vermontville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 7, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Harris Hoekwater, Pastor of the Sunfield United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the family in memory of Matt.
Thelma Sarah Slaght
Thelma Sarah Slaght, age 88, died Monday, November 16, 1998 in Charlotte. Thelma was born September 1, 1910 in St. Johns, the daughter of Frank D. & Lillian Alma (May) McCullough. She was a member of the Eaton Rapids Church of the Nazarene and a former member of the Eaton Rapids Order of the Eastern Star #241. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry in 1979 and her son, Henry Jr.
Surviving are 5 daughters, Maxine Letts of Midland, Linda Crippen of Leslie, Joyce (Don) Clarke of Eaton Rapids, Donaldean (Vince) Evans of TN, Loretta (Daryl) Steele of Eaton Rapids; son, Thaddeus “Butch” (JoAnna) Slaght of Mason; 33 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond (Mary) McCullough of St. Johns; sister, Dora Jean (Hank) Sheldon of Ovid and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on November 18, 1998 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Tom Evans, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Kevin Slaght, Daryl Steel, David Crippen, David Clarke, Thomas Clarke and Michael Clarke. Those desiring may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Thelma S. Slaght.
Maurine S. Smalley
Maurine S. Smalley, 58, of Potterville died April 22, 1998 at a local hospital.
Mrs. Smalley was born on July 23, 1939, the daughter of Hazel O. Green. She was a lifelong resident of Potterville.
She is survived by four daughters, Marquitta (Pete) Warren of Detroit, Michelle Lachapelle of Lansing, Corless (Rick) Bernidini of Illinois, and Ericka Vanhouten of Illinois; two sons, Loren (Patti) Smalley Jr. of Potterville, and Brent Warr of South Carolina; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were at the Tiffany Funeral Home with the Rev. Kirklin Hall Sr. officiating. Interment will be in the volt of her true love, which we all know was Mr. James Lachappelle.
