Ora Mae Griffin
Ora Mae Griffin, 98, of Charlotte died Feb. 17, 1998.
Mrs. Griffin was born Dec. 3, 1899 in Neosho, Miss., the daughter of William and Emma (VanPelt) Burdick. She was a country school teacher, a member of West Carmel Congregational Church and West Carmel Ladies Circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean (Richard) Priesman of Charlotte and Marilyn (Roger) Grove of Lansing; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theron W. Griffin.
Services were Feb. 20 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was in West Carmel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Carmel Congregational Church.
James E. Griffith
James E. Griffith, age 63, died Friday, October 30, 1998 at his residence. Jim was born August 24, 1935 in Greenfield, TN the son of J. Dorman and Flocie E. (Williamson) Griffith. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids. James was a member of the VFW Post #6986 and served honorable in the U.S. Navy aboard the Battleship Iowa from 1955-1957. He retired from General Motors in January of 1997 after 42 years as a Skilled Trades Welder. Jim also farmed in Hamlin Township and the surrounding areas for 31 years.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Joyce E.; 3 sons, David A. (Laurie) Griffith of Eaton Rapids, Timothy J. (Linda) Griffith, Joshua and Daniel Rhodes, Christopher and Elizabeth Griffith, John, James, and Joseph Waite, Thomas and Alan Griffith; 5 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Henry Clark (Dorothy) Griffith of TN.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 2, 1998, at the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Mark A. Griffith, David A. Griffith, Timothy J. Griffith, William T. Cochran, John Ghere, Robert Flory, Lynnette Griffith and Christopher Griffith. Those desiring may make contributions to either the Eaton Rapids Community Heritage Foundation (the James and Joyce Griffith Scholarship Fund), the First United Methodist Church Building Fund or to the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Jim. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Charles G. Grimwood
Charles G. Grimwood, 74, of Nashville, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, Sept. 27 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Grimwood was born in Lansing the son of Charles and Edith (Moore) Grimwood and had been a Nashville resident since 1979. He had lived in Charlotte for 27 years prior to that.
He served in the 3rd Raider Battalion 6th Division, United States Marine Corps during World War II and received the Purple Heart for his meritorious service. He also served during the Korean War. He was employed in the paint department for Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Lansing for 31 years.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Anna (Henry) Grimwood; a daughter, Joann (Gerald) Taylor of Charlotte; three sons, Charles, Jr. (Linda) and Mark both of Charlotte, and Phillip of Sunfield; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Max (Irene) of Carson City; and a sister, Juanita (Harlan) Smalley of Camria, Wis.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Michael in 1952; and three sisters, Lavonna, Marguerite and Genevieve.
Services were Sept. 30 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Calvon Kidder officiating. Military graveside services and interment were at Ferris Township Cemetery, Montcalm County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Steven Patrick Gruber
Steven Patrick Gruber, age 34, died October 31, 1998 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia as a result of a helicopter accident. Steve was born November 14, 1963 in Denver, CO. He was a graduate, with high honors, of Littleton High School class of ’82 and Colorado School of Mindes, Golden, class of ’87 with a degree in Geology. Steve was a Geophysicist with Western Geophysical of Houston, TX working in Bolivia. He was a big, quiet, gentle man who loved his family.
Surviving are his wife, Simone; 2 daughters, Issa Nikole Gruber age 11, and Ashley Mae Gruber age 6; parents James and Bernice (Gallagher) Gruber, Jr. of Littleton, CO; 2 brothers, Jeffrey Allen (Valerie) Gruber of Littleton, CO, Dr. James Vincent Gruber of Somerville, NJ; grandmother, Mae Gruber of Eaton Rapids; uncle, Gerald P. Gruber of Eaton Rapids; aunt, Evelyn (Basil) Johnson of Gross Pointe Farms and several nieces and nephews,
Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Littleton. Interment will follow at the Littleton Cemetery in Colorado. Those desiring may made contributions to the American Red Cross, 444 Sherman, Denver, CO designated for the Honduras Relief Fund in memory of Steven P. Gruber. Effie Hackworth
Effie Hackworth, 88, of Potterville, formerly of Charlotte, died March 13, 1998, after an extended illness.
Mrs. Hackworth was born in Middle Creek, KY., the daughter of Harrison and Izana (Richardson) Williams. She had been a resident of the Charlotte and Potterville area for more than 40 years. She was a homemaker and had been part owner, with her husband and son, Ray, of the Fairway Market, retiring in 1973.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Aaron) Collins of Potterville; four sons, Adrian (June) Hackworth of South Dakota, Ray (Joan) Hackworth of Charlotte, Bob (Dee) Hackworth of Eaton Rapids, and Robert (Hazel) Hackworth of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hackworth.
Services were March 16 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Jeffrey Nunham officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Frances Dona Haff
Frances Dona Haff, 84, of Potterville died April 27, 1998.
Mrs. Haff was born July 9, 1913 in Vermontville, the daughter of Willis and Dona Baker. She married Francis C. Haff on June 24, 1931. She worked for the Secretary of State in the License Bureau. She was a member of the First Church of Nazarene in Lansing.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Francis Haff; one son, Jon (Sandy) Haff of Potterville; one daughter, Gloria (Peter) Trumpower of Lakeview; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Hughes of Marshall.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne.
Services were April 30 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Lansing with the Rev. Donald King and Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Church of the Nazarene Missions.
Ila M. Hager
Ila Mae Hager, 87, of Lake Odessa went home to be with her Lord Oct. 22, 1998, in Hastings. She was born March 22, 1911 in Ionia County, daughter of DeWitt and Erma (Howe) Munson.
Mrs. Hager graduated from Belding High School and Central Michigan County Normal. She taught in county schools until her marriage to Kenneth C. Hager in 1932. The Hager’s owned and operated a farm equipment business in Sunfield for several years. She was later employed by the state of Michigan for many years.
Surviving are her children, Nancy Margosian of Lansing, Elaine (Dean) Nash of Ionia, Myrna (Wendall) Decker of Grand Ledge, William Hager of Woodland, Sarah (Wendell) Studt of Woodland, and Jackilyn (James) Hilliker of Jupiter, Fla.; extended family members, Ivona Rairigh and Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Berry; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and many cherished cousins and friends.
Mrs. Hager was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, in 1986 and son, Dean C., in 1962.
Services were Oct. 26 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher, Chapel, Sunfield, with the Rev. Brian Allbright of the Woodbury United Brethren in Christ Church officiating. Interment followed in the Sunfield Cemetery. The pallbearers were Lee Hager, Gary Hager, Aaron Margolian, Patrick Decker, Deanna Musbach, and Justin Hilliker. Contributions may be made to the Lakewood Community Ambulance, the Mulitple Sclerosis Society, or Hospice of Eaton County.
Grace B. Haigh
Grace B. Haigh, 93, of Charlotte died Jan. 8, 1998, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
Mrs. Haigh was born in Benton Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Archie and Iva Walsh. She was a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Charlotte High School, Eaton County Normal, Eastern Michigan University of Ypsilanti, and Wayne State University of Detroit. In Eaton County, she taught in Millet, Dimondale, and in several rural schools. She also substituted and tutored under the direction of Leora Weymouth. She was a past matron and life member of Potterville Order of Eastern Star #413 and the Michigan Retired School Personnel, and the Womens’ Guild.
She is survived by one niece, Linda Collier; two great-nieces; two great-nephews; and four great-great nieces.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Barnhart; second husband, Lester; three sisters, Florence Gobrect, Mae Fuller, and Alice Maupin; and one brother, Tom Walsh.
Services were Jan. 12 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Jerry Slivensky officiating. Interment was in Benton Township Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Ruth M. Hall
Ruth M. Hall, 81, of Eaton Rapids died March 25, 1998 in Lansing.
Mrs. Hall was born in 1917 in Marlette, the daughter of Elmore H. and Edith L. (Wentworth) Coltson. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids. She was a Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Sunshine Lodge #142 of which she was a member for 50 years and a Past President of District #23. Mrs. Hall was a Red Cross Volunteer at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital and a Hospital Auxiliary member.
She is survived by two sons, Richard S. (Sue) Hall, Jr. of Salem, Or., and William (Sue) Hall of Eaton Rapids; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Russell (Mary) Coltson of Florida; two sisters-in-law, Jan Coltson of Cheboygan and Mary Hall of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Hall.
Services will be on March 30 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Dr. Alan Malcolm officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the First Congregational Church or the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital.
