Theron A. Hall
Theron A. Hall, 92, of Charlotte, formerly of Olivet, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Mr. Hall was born in Brookfield Township, Eaton County, the son of Arthur and Kitty (Fordham) Hall, and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a farmer and had been employed by the Michigan State Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene and was serving as president of the Resident’s Council at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
He is survived by two daughters, Ellen (Steven) Force of Fayetteville, N.C., and Gloria Armbrustmacher of Grand Ledge; two sons, Lee (Sandy) of Alpena, and Dennis (Nancy) of Grand Ledge; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Stasia (Holcomb) on Aug. 10, 1991 and by six brothers.
Services were Sept. 9 at the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in the Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice, the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene or the American Cancer Society.
Roger E. Hallifax
Roger E. Hallifax, age 81, of Rural Eaton Rapids died Thursday, September 3, 1998. He was born December 5, 1916 in Clinton, Oklahoma the son of George and Lois (Rogers) Hallifax. Mr. Hallifax was a retired accountant for the Charlotte Public Schools, and Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Lansing Moose Lodge and a member of the National Model Railroad Association, Inc.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Genevieve (Kohl); 5 daughters, Patricia (Donald) Buggia of DeWitt, Lois Hallifax of Lansing, Jan C. H. (Rodney) Vedder of Eagle, JoAnn (Lynn) Anderson of DeWitt and Julie “Casey” (Scott) Wooster of Chelsea; 5 grandchildren, Tammy & Jeffrey Anderson, Paige Vedder, Breanna & Carley Wooster; brother, Richard (Mary Jayne) Hallifax of Munising; sister, Betty (Dr. Wilford) Davis of Saline; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 5, 1998 at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed at the Munger Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the American Lung Assn. in memory of Roger E. Hallifax.
Lorena F. Hammond
Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, age 75 died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998 in her home at Sun Lakes, AZ.
God saw she was getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put her arms around her and whispered “Come with me”.
Mrs. Hammond was born Feb. 18, 1923 in Lansing to Ray D. and Bonnie M. Laverty.
She and her family were devoted to dairy farming which took them from Michigan to Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii and Arizona.
She was a leader in the Brookfield 4-H Club and a member of the Eaton County Extension Club. She also worked at Motor Wheel, Montgomery Ward and Sears Catalog.
Lorena’s Masonic affiliations were High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem in Charlotte in 1959-60.
She was a life member of the Brookfield #352 Order of the Eastern Star, also being a member at Hickory Corners and a dual member in Chandler, AZ.
She was President of Eaton County Association in 1961-62, Grand Committee of Michigan in 1962-63 and a past Matron of Brookfield in 1951-52.
She was predeceased by her parents and husband of 49 years, Harold E. “Shorty”. Surviving are three daughters, Hope E. (Charles) Smith of Charlotte, Faith L. (Galen) Higdon of Eaton Rapids, Shari T. (Dr. Gerald) Snider of Goshen, IN; one son, Charles P. (Dell) of Tucson, AZ; three granddaughters, Rachel (David) Rockafellow of Sonoma, CA, Nicole (Michael) Freeman and Bethany Hammond, both of Tucson, AZ; two great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; three sisters, Linda M. Davis and Sharon J. Miller of Hawaii and Charlene (Don) Moore of Weidman; special pet, “Blue”; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law.
Mrs. Hammond requested cremation. Memorial services will be held at the Brookfield Masonic Temple on Dec. 12, 1998 at 3 p.m.

Bertha Mae Harmon
Bertha Mae Harmon, 79, of Vermontville died March 22, 1998.
Mrs. Harmon was born April 15, 1918 in Chester Township, the daughter of Abie and Della (Mackmore) Ackley. She had been a nurse’s aide.
She is survived by two daughters, Donna (Walt) Wyskowski of Charlotte, and Linda (Alton) Olmstead of Vermontville; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Merritt (Goldie) Ackley of Coos Bay, Oregon; four sisters, Betty (Walt) Goff of Eaton Rapids, Lucille Sanders of Bellevue, Geraldine Kilborn of Vermontville, and Joyce (George) Hewitt of Assyria.
Services were March 26 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in Freemire Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Mildred C. (Duncan) Harmon
Mildred C. Harmon of Houghton Lake, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 95, died Thursday, July 9, 1998. Mildred was born November 9, 1902 in Ashley, Indiana the only child of the late Frank and Maude Duncan. She moved to Olivet in 1913 and graduated from Olivet High School and Western Michigan University. She married the late Glennwood Harmon of Olivet in June 1926, and moved to Durfee Rd. in Eaton Rapids in 1940. Mrs. Harmon retired with 15 years of teaching in the Eaton and Calhoun Counties in 1957. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, active in W.S.C.S., Eaton Rapids Rural Extension Club, Pioneer Club and the Senior Citizens Nutrition Club all of Eaton Rapids. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Glennwood; son, Kent; daughter, Thais Harmon-Griffin; grandsons, Gary Harmon and Glennwood (Woody) Fletcher; great-grandson, Kevin Pugh.
Surviving are her daughter, Glenna (Leonard) Collins of Mason; grandchildren, Glenette (Steve) Pugh, Harry (Pam) Fletcher, Jerry Harmon, Larry Harmon, Blake (Jane) Griffin, Belinda (Jim) Gould, Brenda (A.C.) Bradley, Linda (Tom) Whipple, Lynn (Shannon) griffin, Loreen Wickens, Loren (Debbie) Griffin, Bic Thu Harmon; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, Sydney.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 13th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church or the Eaton Rapids Senior Center in memory of Mildred C. Harmon.
Burr Hartenburg
Burr Hartenburg, 62, of Vermontville died Oct. 13, 1998. Mr. Hartenburg was born May 31, 1936 in Lansing.
He was a graduate of Michigan State University, class of 1959, receiving a masters and specialist degree. In 1959, he commenced an education career at an agriculture teacher at Vermontville High School. He went on to serve the Maple Valley School District with great pride over the next 39 years in a variety of positions, most notably as the junior and senior high principal retiring in 1998. Mr. Hartenburg was very active with the Future Farmers of America and Boy Scouts. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Upholstering and woodworking occupied much of his time and he loved antiquing and gardening.
He is survived by three daughters, Julie (Douglas) Tews of Dimondale, Gretchen (Keith) Pretty of Kalamazoo, and Rachel (James) Myers of London, Ohio; a son, Kurt Hartenburg of Waterford; the mother of his children, Audrey Hartenburg of Vermontville; six grandchildren, Jenna, Adam, Audra, Victoria, Kathryn, Thomas; parents, Lute and Maxine Hartenburg of Eaton Rapids; brother, Vern Hartenburg of West Lake, Ohio; sister-in-law, Renee Hartenburg of Eaton Rapids; and friend, Kay Wyble of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Hartenburg in 1990.
Services were held Oct. 16 at Robbins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Debow officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Valley Memorial Scholarship Foundation for the purpose of establishing a scholarship in his honor.
Cecil J. Hartenburg
Cecil J. Hartenburg, age 83, of rural Eaton Rapids and Mason area, died Saturday, April 18, 1998 at the Martin Luther Holt Home. Cecil was born April 27, 1914 in Eaton Rapids the son of Carl and Cecile (Clarke) Hartenburg. Mr. Hartenburg worked for Horner Woolen Mills in Eaton Rapids and retired from Lindell Drop Forge in Lansing and spent most of his life farming. Preceding him in death are his wife, Mable; daughter, Janet DeLano and 2 brothers, Donald and Lloyd Hartenburg.
Surviving are 4 children: 3 sons, Cecil James (Sue) Hartenburg Jr. of Mason, Carl (Nancy) Hartenburg of Lexington, TN and William Hartenburg of Mason; daughter, Martha Bowen of Vermontville; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter; 2 brothers, Max (Enid) Hartenburg of Manistique and Willis (Helen) Hartenburg of Rapids River; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 22, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial will be at Bunker Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers will be Jerry Maurer, Don Edgar, Tom Thornton, Matt Brown, Harry Brown, and Larry Brown. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to the Martin Luther Holt Home in memory of Cecil J. Hartenburg.
Forrest G. Haun
Forrest G. Haun, 75, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 17, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Haun was born March 1, 1922, in Bellevue Township, the son of Orlo and Amanda Haun. He worked at Dale Baum’s service station, Fisher Body, Lenard Oil Co. before moving to Phoenix. He retired from T.W.A. Airlines in Phoenix. Mr. Haun was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Phoenix.
He is survived by one brother, Lloyd; one sister, Wilene Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, M. Rosalie.
Services were Green Acres Memorial Gardens. He was buried in the Garden of Peace in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Vivian Haun
Vivian Edith Haun, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Mount Pleasant, died Oct. 22, 1998, at St. Lawrence Dimondale Center.
Mrs. Haun was born June 2, 1911, in Charlotte, the daughter of Frank and Evmae (Bates) McLaughlin. She married Harold Haun June 2, 1936, and was a Latin and English teacher in the Ashley and Clare public schools. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Child Study Club, American Association of University Women, Mount Pleasant Women’s Club, Presbyterian Church of Mount Pleasant, and Mount Pleasant Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Diantha (Charles) Hicks of Alma; one son, Macklin (Sue) of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Kenda (Jon) Tomes of Kansas City, MO, Demoree (Abdel) Abdalla of Alma, Joseph Hicks of Chicago, IL, Edward Hicks of Ann Arbor, James (Tanya) Haun of Beloit, WI, and Marie Haun of Charlotte; five great-grandchildren, Zacharia Abdalla, Sarah Abdalla, Samuel Javed, Adam Javed, and Aree Tomes; and one sister-in-law, Barbara McLaughlin of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985, two brothers, Ion McLaughlin and Leighton McLaughlin.
Visitation is Sunday, Oct. 25, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Services are Monday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment is in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
