Margaret L. Hausch
Margaret L. Hausch, age 85, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, November 9, 1998 in Charlotte, Michigan. Mrs. Hausch was born October 10, 1913, in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Chancey and Bertha (Sibra) Smith. Margaret and her husband owned and operated the Hausch Meat Market in Eaton Rapids. They retired in 1974. Margaret was a very active member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens and enjoyed playing Bingo. Preceding her in death was her husband Ernest in 1982.
Surviving are 3 children; James Bush of Eaton Rapids, Donna (Larry) Lusk of Oakwood, Ohio and Karline (Herb) Gates Jr. of Eaton Rapids; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 12, from the Skinner Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were grandsons, Daniel Gates, Donald Johnson, Raymond Halliwill, Jeff Auvenshine, Steve Voshell and Allen Voshell. For those desiring a memorial contribution may be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center, in memory of Margaret L. Hausch.
Neil E. Hecox
Neil E. Hecox, 84, of Marshall died Feb. 23, 1998, at the Battle Creek Health System following a short illness.
Mr. Hecox was born on Nov. 30, 1913, in Ontonagon, the son of Fred M. and Marguerite (Cockon) Hecox. He was a graduate of Ontonagon High School and attended Eastern Michigan University. He has been a resident of Marshall since 1957, moving from Bellevue. He and his wife owned and operated a variety store in Marshall. He was also employed by the Ford Motor Company of Plymouth for 10 years. On July 5, 1941, he married Moreen Shaffer in Weston.
He is survived by his wife, Moreen; daughter, Cheryl N. Roth of Virginia; two sons, Fred Hecox and Art Hecox of Marshall; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Nina Yauch and Maxine Michalski; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were Feb. 26 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home, Inc. Interment followed in Oakridge Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Marshall Fountain Clinic.
Claude C. (Bob) Herber Jr.
Claude C. (Bob) Herber, Jr., 74, of rural Bellevue passed away on May 9, 1998, at Whitehills Health Care Center, East Lansing.
Mr. Herber was born on Nov. 18, 1923 in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Claude and Mary (Jordon) Herber Sr. He attended school in Morrice and resided most of his life in the Morrice, Bancroft and Bellevue areas. His lifetime work was farming.
He is survived by three sisters, Frances (Raymond) Hazelton of Vernon, Betty (Martin) O’Toole of Okemos, and Emily Slagle of Florida; and one brother, Charles Herber of Marion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Virginia; and one brother, Frank.
Graveside services were May 12 at Hillsdale Cemetery, Kalamo, with the Rev. John Walworth officiating.
Anna Herman
Anna May Herman, 52, of Lansing, died Oct. 20, 1998 at Ingham Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Herman was born Aug. 19, 1946 in Charlotte, the daughter of Leslie and Caroline (Myers) Parker. She married David Herman June 30, 1988. She was a member of the Eagles of Charlotte and Holt.
She is survived by her husband, Dave; two daughters, Caroline Grace Bolan and Katherine Ann Bolan both of Lansing; three sons, James (Kathleen May) Bolan Jr., John Michael Frederick Bolan, and Patrick Aaron Bolan, all of Lansing; four grandchildren, Zachariah, Britney, Ricky, and Chelsea; and a brother, William Parker of Lansing. Services were held Oct. 23 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Don Weston officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Clyde W. Hess Sr.
Clyde W. Hess Sr., 84, of Convis Township died Feb. 28, 1998 at the Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Hess was born Jan. 29, 1914 in Clarendon Township, the son of Frank and Maude (Gary) Hess. He married Esther Manifold on July 31, 1938 in Angola, Ind. He operated a sheep shearing business and worked at Marshall Furnace and Eaton Corporation in Marshall, Kellogg Company and Olivet Aviation. He started Hess Roofing Co. in 1955 until retiring in 1991, it is now Hess Construction Company.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Esther; two sons, Clyde W. Hess, Jr. and James Hess of Bellevue; two daughters, Janet Hughes of Assyria and Jean Ann Rigelman of Olivet; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vera Kidd of Battle Creek.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ella Jennings and Marie Kappis; and two brothers, Howard and Milford Hess.
Services were March 4 at the Shawn Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, with the Rev. Linda Farmer-Lewis officiating. Interment was in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Emmett Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Calhoun County Cancer Society.
Derek Byington-Lloyd Hibdon
Derek Byington-Lloyd Hibdon, 10, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Vermontville, went to be with the Lord March 20, 1998 while visiting family in Lubbock, Texas.
Derek was born Aug. 26, 1987 in Stuttgart-Badd Cannstadt, Germany. He attended the Faith Baptist Church in Grand Rapids. When in Vermontville, he attended the Vermontville Bible Church. He enjoyed doing magic.
Derek is survived by his mother and stepfather, Jennifer and Jurrill Hibdon of Grand Rapids; father and stepmother, David and Donna Lloyd of Ft. Mills, S.C.; sister, Jade, Jenaye, and Tonya; brothers, Kenny, Timothy, and Patrick; maternal grandparents, Philip and Peggy Byington of Vermontville; paternal step-grandparents, LeRoy and Joyce Hibdon of Lubbock, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Memorial services were April 4 at the Vermontville Bible Church.
Mary R. Hice
Mary Rose Hice, 91, of Charlotte died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998.
Mrs. Hice was born Jan. 10, 1907, in Loda, Ill., the daughter of Samuel and Lillie (Patterson) Snyder. She moved to Charlotte in 1920 where she graduated from Charlotte High School and Eaton County Normal. She married her husband, Bernard in 1926. They farmed in Carmel, Kalamo, and Brookfield Townships. Mrs. Hice taught Sunday School for over 30 years in the Five Corners area. She attended the Gresham United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Betty Jo (Don) Mathis of LaGrange, Wyo. and Ann (George) Hull of Mesa, Ariz.; two sons, Winton (Bette) and Kenneth (Sharon) both of Charlotte; daughter-in-law, Joyce Hice of Pontiac; 18 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; a son, Jerrold; two sisters, Helen Bess and Gladys Wilkinson; and two brothers, Raymond and Warren Snyder.
Services were Sept. 28 at the Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gresham United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity Eaton County, or Frontier School of the Bible in LaGrange, Wyo.
Kenneth Russell Higelmire
Kenneth Russell Higelmire, age 74 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, November 7, 1998 at a Lansing Hospital. He was born June 19, 1924 in Lansing, MI, the son of Clifford and Bertha (Welsh) Higelmire. Ken was a graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School and the Owosso Bible College. He worked at Mid-West in Owosso and Durrand and later Pastored in Missionary Churches in Tennessee and upon retiring he returned to farming in Eaton Rapids. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty, parents and brother, Charles.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn of Eaton Rapids; sister, Barbara (Merle) Wright of Eaton Rapids and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Ken’s wishes were that he be cremated and his ashes buried next to his first wife, Betty, in the Grovenburg Cemetery. The family was served through the Skinner Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids.
George Hilliard
George Hilliard, age 83, died Friday, September 18, 1998, in Charlotte. George was born December 19, 1914 in Eaton Rapids the son of William and Susan (Brandon) Hilliard. Mr. Hilliard was a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1933. He owned and operated the Hilliard Oil Co. for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Elizabeth (Shepardson) Desgrange and son-in-law, Neil Jones.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Spurlock) Hilliard; 2 daughters, Patricia Jones of Lansing, Ruth (Larry) Gooch of Eaton Rapids; son, Dick (Sharla) Hilliard of Onondaga; 6 grandchildren, Gregg (Lois) Gooch of Highland, Mindy Jones of Lansing, Kimberly (Brian) Willcutt of Onondaga, Joy (Kyle) Moulton of Eaton Rapids, Perry (Ann) Gooch of Grand Rapids, James Hilliard of Rives Junction; 5 great grandchildren, Joshua Terwilliger, Grant Gooch, Griffin Gooch, Andy Moulton, Dani Willcutt; his brother, John (Thelma) Hilliard of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, September 21, 1998, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Winford Collins officiating. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery. Casket bearers were Gregg Gooch, Perry Gooch, Kyle Moulton, Jim Hilliard and Brian Willcutt. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Assembly of God Church in memory of George Hilliard.
