Flin Hillis
Flin Hillis, 76, of Olivet died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.
Mr. Hillis was born June 18, 1922 in McMinnville, Tenn., the son of Oliver and Fluellar (Russell) Hillis. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a submariner in the Pacific Theater. He achieved the rank of Electrician’s Mate First Class. He was an electrician for over 50 years with Local #3443 IBEW, retiring in 1985. He married Wanda (Walkinshaw) 50 years ago June 18, 1948. He was a 50-year member of the IBEW, where he helped develop the apprentice program for the local union. He was a scout leader and enjoyed camping. In 1984 he built an underground house and owned a commercial and residential electrical business from 1964-67. He designed and built solar panels to generate heat and water before they were common on the market. He also completed a correspondence course in electronics.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda; two daughters, Susan McDaniel of Brooklet, Ga. and Terilynn Hillis of Olivet; four sons, Steven Hillis of Grand Rapids, Douglas and David Hillis of Battle Creek, and Dana Hillis of Olivet; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lettie Tucker and Mary Ruth Carr of McMinnville, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lila Hale; and three brothers, Roy, Morgan and Wilmarth Hillis.
Services were Dec. 2 at the Olivet First Assembly of God with the Rev. Doug Hammond officiating. Interment was in the Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Emmett Township. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home-Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Thelma A. Hisler
Thelma A. (Sebastian) Hisler, 86, died Feb. 12, 1998, at the Sparrow Hospital, Lansing, after a short illness.
Mrs. Hisler was born in Albion, the daughter of Louis P. and Fannie (Sowle) Sebastian and had been a lifelong area resident. She was a graduate of Albion High School. She was a member of the Brookfield Eaton United Methodist Church, the Duke Lake Endeavor Society, the Farm Bureau, and the Olivet Senior Citizens. She married Henry Hisler on March 12, 1932.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald (Nila) Hisler and Rodger (Janice) Hisler both of Charlotte; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by her husband, Henry.
Services were Feb. 16 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Geri Litchfield officiating. Interment was in the Clarence Center Cemetery.

Albert Wesley Hogle
Albert Wesley Hogle, 78, of Charlotte, died Sunday, June 14, 1998.
Mr. Hogle was born Jan. 5, 1920, in Lakeview, the son of LeRoy and Grace (Tripp) Hogle. He worked in road construction as a heavy equipment operator for Goodwin & Sons and Harris Brothers. He was a life member of VFW Post 2406 of Charlotte and a member of Greenawalt Flaharty Post 42.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Jane (Boyer) Hogle; daughter, Linda Lamb of Antioch, Tenn.; sons, Neil (Patricia) Hogle of Lansing and Lowell Hogle of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; brother, Lee (Elnora) Hogle of Riverview, sister, Thelma Randall of Banning, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Wednesday, June 17, at Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment will be in Fort Custer Cemetery in Augusta.
Marian L. Hogle
Marian L. Hogle, 75, of Olivet died Jan. 21, 1998, at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing.
Mrs. Hogle was born in Augusta, the daughter of Lisle and Frieda (Arndt) Kellogg. She was head of maintenance at Olivet College for 40 years, retiring in 1992. She was a member of the Rebekahs until 1960.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Clare) Curtis of Charlotte; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; special friends, Wanda Dailey and Doris Harrington; two sisters, Gwendola Johnson of Battle Creek, Vera (Jerry) Barnes of Leonidas; and two brothers, Glenn (Marilyn) Kellogg of Lansing, Lisle (Mary) Kellogg, Jr. of Battle Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle.
Services were Jan. 24 at the Pray Funeral Home, with the Rev. Winford Collins officiating.
Ruth C. Holder
Ruth C. Holder, 90, of Bellevue died Jan. 6, 1998, at the Battle Creek Health System. She resided at Patricia Foster Care Home in Bellevue since 1993.
Mrs. Holder was born April 16, 1907, in Baltimore Township, the daughter of William and Lydia (Garrison) Bryans. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1924 and Sheldon School of Business in Chicago in 1927. She worked for several attorneys and insurance agencies in Hastings and Woodland, and worked for Kim Sigler who later became Governor of Michigan. She married Harvey Myers in 1927, ended in divorce. Then she married Harold Swanson in 1944, he died. She married Clare Holder in 1952, he also died.
She is survived by her stepson, Richard (Betty) Swanson of Rapid City; three nieces; and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernard, Arthur, and Robert Bryans, and two sisters, Emma Keller and Pearl Emmons.
Services were Jan. 9 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Wendell Stine officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Hastings.
Memorial contributions may be made out to the Barry Community Hospice or the Salvation Army.
Orville Hollister
Orville “Shorty” Hollister, 74, of Bellevue Township died April 10, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital, Charlotte, after being stricken at home.
Mr. Hollister was born August 5, 1923 in Assyria Township, to Charles A. and Virgie (Avers) Hollister. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in Florida and Hawaii. He married Veretta Jean F. Riley on October 23, 1977. Mr. Hollister was employed by Union Pump and the John Beam Company in Lansing, before starting Hollister Auto Parts in Bellevue, which he operated for 30 years. He was a member of the Battle Creek Elks Lodge #131, and Eagles Aerie #299 where he was on the bowling team.
He is survived by his wife, Veretta J. Hollister; three sons, Orville Hollister and Robert Hollister of Charlotte, and Charles Hollister of Bellevue; four daughters, Judy Jenkins of Bellevue, Paulette Fancher of Charlotte, Pam James and Deb Jaskie both of Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard of Florida and Bernard of Battle Creek; six sisters, Grace Smith of Texas, Elizabeth Gregg of Battle Creek, Luetta Bruin of Mason, Doris Overracker and Peg Pennington of Battle Creek, and Jennetta West of Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest; and two sisters, Marcella Hollister and Margaret Dempsey; and a great-granddaughter.
Services were April 14 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Marvin C. Morgan officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville.

John C. Jackson
John C. Jackson, 93, of Sunfield died Dec. 28, 1997, in Charlotte.
Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 11, 1904, in Sunfield, the son of James and Florence May (Lippincott) Jackson. He retired from Worthington’s Hardware, Lansing in 1964. He was a member of the Sunfield United Brethren in Christ Church and the Michigan Centennial Farms Association of Eaton County. Mr. Jackson helped to build and maintain the Centennial Acres Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, son, LeRoy (Norma) Jackson of Sunfield; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father; one brother, Glen (Marie) Jackson; and one sister, Sue (Roy) Bishop.
Services were Dec. 31 at the Sunfield United Brethren in Christ Church with the Rev. Mark E. Ralph officiating. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken. Arrangements were made by the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.
