Florence C. Ledyard

Florence C. Ledyard, 91, of Charlotte died Feb. 23, 1998 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.

Mrs. Ledyard was the daughter of Otis V. and Carrie (Van Orman) Walker of Olivet. She married Albert R. Ledyard of Charlotte on Sept. 22, 1934. She was a retired schoolteacher of 43 years.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marjorie Walker of Charlotte; two nephews; and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Albert Ledyard; one brother, Harry Walker; and sister, Grace Wood.

Services were Feb. 27 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Duane Royston officiating. Interment followed in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Olive LeVan

Olive M. LeVan, 95, of Mulliken, died Sept. 18 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte.

Mrs. LeVan was born in Roxand Township on Nov. 14, 1902, the daughter of Delorin and Mary (Lundquist) Boyer. She was a church pianist at Charlotte Methodist Church, Grand Ledge and Mulliken. In 1925 she married Oscar LeVan. She was a country schoolteacher, helped with the farm, and gave music lessons.

She is survived by four daughters, Marjorie (Neil) Southworth of Mulliken, Mary (Paul) Owens, of Grass Valley, Calif., Martha (Raymond) Szudzik of Cadillac and Freda Buzzard of Toledo, Ohio; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; her son, Delorin; and three great-grandchildren.

Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken. Pallbearers were Clint Southworth, Armon Southworth, Brian Southworth, Mitchell LeVan, Dean Holzworth and Brian Horlings.

Harold Lightner

Harold W. Lightner, 83, of Battle Creek, and formerly of Charlotte died on Saturday, October 24, 1998 at the Battle Creek Veterans Administration Medical Center. Harold was born January 10, 1915 in Eaton Township, the son of Asa and Sylvania (Cobb) Lightner. He lived most of his life in the Charlotte area where he attended country schools. Harold was a farmer all his life, farming in the Charlotte area and also Bellvedere, IL, for several years before returning to Michigan. He also worked at the Miller Dairy Farms in Eaton Rapids for 10 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Asiatic/Pacific European Theatre. He enjoyed reading books, especially Westerns, following world news, hunting and fishing, and crocheting blankets. Harold married the former Mary J. Bird on July 13, 1946. She preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were brothers, Henry, Charlie, Ralph, Harry and B.J. Lightner; and sisters, Gena Benedict and Edith Baker. Surviving him are several nieces and nephews, Audrey and Bernard Ommen and James and Lois Lightner of Vermontville, Margaret and Carl French, Linda White and Gary Lightner all of Charlotte, Sharon and Robert Smith and Richard Lightner all of Detroit. Funeral services were held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Fort Custer National Cemetery with Rev. Margriet Decker officiating. Arrangements are by Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek.

Robert Keith Linnabary

Robert Keith Linnabary of Jackson, age 53, died Monday, August 17, 1998 in Ann Arbor. Robert was born November 17, 1944 in Detroit, the son of Earl James and Betty Jane (Moomaw) Linnabary. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Surviving are his stepmother, Barbara L. Linnabary of Springport; 2 brothers, John (Cynthia) Linnabary of Southgate and James Linnabary; stepbrother, Earl Linnabary of Springport; 3 stepsisters, Patricia Linnabary of Jackson, Angelia (Allen) Kelly and Amy Linnabary all of Eaton Rapids.

There will be no services. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Clarence B. Locke

Clarence B. Locke, age 96, died Sunday, October 4, 1998, in Charlotte, he was born March 8, 1902 in Scriba, (Oswego Co.) New York to Vincent Lee and Mary Amelia (Bassett) Locke. Clarence came to Michigan in 1920 and went to work at Horner Woolen Mills in Eaton Rapids where he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor. He will be fondly remembered by those who still knew him from Horner’s. He was a life member of the Eaton Rapids Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM and a member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Center where he will be remembered for the peanut butter fudge and pumpkin pies that he shared with everyone there. He was a first-rate handyman, who could fix almost anything, and what he couldn’t fix, he’d build from scratch. Clarence was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Adora (Bartlett) Locke in 1963; infant son, William Henry in 1931; second wife, Ruby B. (Welch) Locke; brother, Wilbur Locke; 2 sisters, Viola Locke and Delia Fitzgerald.

Surviving are 2 daughters, Mary Jane Terwilliger of Charlotte and Nadean Olney of Eaton Rapids; 3 sons, Harold “Richard” Locke, William (Mae) Locke, Lawrence (Beverly) Locke all of Eaton Rapids; sister, Mildred (Ed) Ottney of Huntington Quebec, Canada; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.

A Masonic Lodge service was held Tuesday evening. Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Stephen Klink of the Eaton Rapids Community Christian Church officiating. Interment followed at Brickyard Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center in memory of Clarence Locke.

Doris Jean Lokken

Doris Jean Lokken, age 63, of Eaton Rapids, died suddenly Sunday, September 13, 1998. Born November 4, 1934 in Grayling, Michigan, the daughter of Oscar and Ethel (Waite) Horning. Mrs. Lokken was a graduate of the Grayling High School Class of 1952. She enjoyed camping and fishing with her family, bird watching, and the beauty of flowers. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by a grandson Jason Lokken, and two brothers, Ted and Elery Horning.

Surviving are her husband of 44 years, Allert; 4 children, Michael (Teresa) Lokken of Eaton Rapids, Terri (Fred) Bradley of Jackson, Traci (David) Underwood of Indianapolis, IN and Timothy (Bonnie) Lokken of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 8 brothers and sisters, John Horning of Ft. Gratiot, MI, Bob Horning of Kentucky, Donna Gardiner of South Gate, MI, Ilene Hyslop of Mesa, AZ, Betty Cde Baca of Grayling, Oscar Horning JR. of Yuba City, CA, Irene Ribby of Mason, MI, and Shirley Rouse of Roscommon, MI; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 17th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Jason Blackwell, Andy Blackwell, Ron Falk, Bill Johnson, John Horning and Roy Gardiner.

Olive F. London

Olive F. London, 89, of Lakeview, formerly of Olivet and Battle Creek, died May 20, 1998 at the Kelsey Memorial Hospital, Lakeview after an extended illness.

Mrs. London was born in Crawford County, Ind., the daughter of David V. and Bessie (Boyd) Sharpe. She was a schoolteacher who taught in the Pennfield School System, retiring in 1970. Also, with her husband, she had owned and operated the former State Theatre in Olivet. Mrs. London was a member of the Sonoma Methodist Church in Battle Creek.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn (Lotar) Wilke of Mary Esther, Fla.; and one son, Dr. John London of Lakeview.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl London; and one son, Richard V. London.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside services and interment will be May 23 at the Olivet Cemetery, Olivet, with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Calhoun County Humane Society.

Ellen Jane Long

Ellen Jane (Holmes) Long, age 84, died Thursday, August 13, 1998 in Grand Rapids. Ellen Jane was born September 7, 1913 on the family homestead on Houston Road in Hamlin Twp., Eaton Co. MI. The daughter of Frank Schyler and Mabel (Hoye) Holmes, she attended the Bay Window Country School and was a graduate of the Eaton Rapids High School Class of 1931. Mrs. Long attended some horticulture classes at MSU, started Brookview Florist in 1946, and was employed with the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Legislative Service Bureau. She joined the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church on Easter Morning of 1923 and was a Red Cross volunteer. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary G. Holmes and an infant brother.

Surviving are 3 daughters, Mary Ellen (Ashton) Fredenburg, Janet Elaine (Richard) Fulton all of Kalamazoo, Annamarie (John) Pelham of Glen Arbor; 6 grandchildren, Lawrence Fredenburg, Robert (Sally) Fredenburg all of Kalamazoo, David (Linda) Fredenburg of Lansing, Susan Fulton Baird of Plainwell, Capt. Dick (Judi) Fulton, USAF, New Jersey, Heather Pelham of Petoskey; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Elizabeth Fredenburg, Roddy and Mark Baird, Taylor Fulton; and two cousins, Ardella Holmes of Iron River and Eleanor Labine of New Mexico.

Funeral services were held on Monday, August 17, 1998 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were her grandchildren. Those desiring may make contributions to either the First United Methodist Church, Alzheimer’s Association, American Red Cross, Clark Retirement Community or Hospice in memory of Ellen Jane Long.

Rose Loomis

Rose B. Loomis, 79, of Clare, formerly of Charlotte, died Oct. 6, 1998, at the Tendercare Nursing Home in Clare after an extended illness.

Mrs. Loomis was born in Leota, the daughter of Ignatz and Goldie (Hoffman) Breyer. She married Roby Loomis in 1957.

She is survived by one son, Donald Austin of Elwell; one grandson, Stephen Austin; three sisters, Adeline Peters of Houghton Lake, Elsie Schnepp of Beaverton, and Susie Kenny of Prudenville.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992.

Services were Oct. 8 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte. Interment was in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
