Harold E. Marsh

Harold Edwin “Swampy” Marsh, 69, of Charlotte, formerly of Marshall, died Jan. 31, 1998, following a length illness.

Mr. Marsh was born April 22, 1928, in Charlotte, the son of Frank and Virginia (Cox) Marsh. He served in the US Marine Corps at the end of World War II and was called back into active duty during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in combat June 23, 1951. He was a life member of the Maple City VFW Post #2406 of Charlotte. He had owned and operated fabric stores in Marshall and Eaton Rapids and had been a dispatcher for Consumers Power. He had published a series of tall tales about pioneer life in mid-Michigan.

He is survived by two daughters, Crystal Sumerix of Charlotte and Karla Marsh of Lansing; one son, Steve (Debora) of Ann Arbor; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Jean (Vern) Royston of San Benito, Texas.

Services were Feb. 3 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Howard Marsh Sr.

Howard (Pat) Marsh Sr., 80, died Jan. 21, 1998, at Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing.

Mr. Marsh was born July 9, 1917, in Portland, the son of Alonzo and Edna (Vanderburg) Marsh. He was a supervisor for 33 years for Brown Brothers Construction. After retirement, he had been a driver for Campus Ford for seven years.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Reva; one daughter, Melinda Sue (Kelly) Hanson Napier of Lansing; four sons, Howard Jr. (Sandra) of Okemos, David (Marilyn, deceased) of Lansing, Fred (Sue) of Grand Ledge, and Dan (Melinda) of Lansing; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther of Charlotte, Norma of Sunfield, and Mary (Bob) Aspen of Mulliken; one brother, Fred of Grand Rapids; many nieces and nephews; and friends.

Services were Jan. 24 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield. Interment was in the Sunfield Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jessiemae “Jackie” Marsh

Jessiemae “Jackie” Marsh, 84, of Dimondale died March 24, 1998 at her home.

Cremation services were held through Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dorothy Hull Library – Windsor Township, 401 W. Jefferson, Dimondale.

Wayne Marsh

Wayne R. Marsh, 74, of Potterville, formerly of Grand Ledge, died at his home Sept. 29, 1998.

Mr. Marsha was born on Dec. 22, 1923, in Lansing and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army Air force as a radar mechanic. He was a part-time Eaton County Deputy Sheriff for eight years, part-time employee of the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, grand Ledge. He retired from Oldsmobile as a tinsmith after nearly 34 years of service. He was a member and Past Master of Grand Ledge Masonic Lodge #179, member of the Grand Ledge O.E.S. Chapter #14, and member of the Eager Beaver Camping Club and National Campers and Hikers Assoc.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine; two daughters, Charlene (Tom) Heiss of Vermontville and Sharon (Hal) Olsen of Delton; two sons, John (Sheila) Marsh of Vermontville and David (Peg) Marsh of Grand Ledge; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; one brother, Hugh Marsh of Shaftsburg; and one sister, Evelyn McGann of Martinsville, Va.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Parkhurst; three brothers, Roland, Paul, and Olen Marsh; and two half-sisters, Marjory Wyble and Dorothy Carpenter.

Services were Oct. 2 at the Peters and Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with the Rev. Robert Betts officiating. Interment was at the Deepdale Memorial Park in Lansing.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.

Mary E. Martens

Mary E. Martens, 77, of Bellevue died Feb. 18, 1998, at her daughter’s home in Pleasant Lake.

Mrs. Martens was born Sept. 8, 1920, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Carl and Bessie (Whiting) Westcott. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. She married Roger D. Martens on Sept. 18, 1946 in Battle Creek. She was employed 14 years as a billing clerk with Community Hospital, retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church and it’s Rachael Circle and United Methodist Women.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas D. Martens of Battle Creek and David C. Martens of Charlotte; one daughter, Kathleen E. Martens of Pleasant Lake; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; and brother, James Westcott of Gull Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Martens; and brother, Richard Westcott.

Services were Feb. 21 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Jackson.

Roy E. Moore

Roy E. Moore, 85, of Eaton Rapids died March 9, 1998 at a nursing home in Charlotte.

Mr. Moore was born Oct. 14, 1912 in Eaton County, the son of Edburt and Mattie (Shaw) Moore. He was a retired Press-Operator for General Motors in Lansing. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #652.

He is survived by one son, Edburt (Barbara) Moore of Mason; two daughters, Kay Baker of Eaton Rapids and Yvonne (Stan) Palmer of Charlotte; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, O.D. Moore of Florida; one sister, Margaret Noble of Battle Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Miller.

Services were March 13 at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. William Houch officiating. Interment followed at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Richard V. Morris

Richard V. Morris, 76, of Parkersburg, W.Va., died July 14, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital in Parkersburg.

He was born in Charlotte. He was retired from the GSA Federal Building and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church and the VFW.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Nichols Morris; two daughters, Irene Morris-Crowder of Anaheim, Calif., and Wanda Fay Dawson of Parkersberg; five grandchildren, Douglas Richard Morris and Donald Ronald Morris, both of Parkersburg, Michael Wayne Allen and Melissa Renee Allen, both of Gilmore, Texas, and Danielle Renee Crowder of Anaheim; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack E. Morris of Charlotte; three sisters, Valdean Young and Ruth Cleavenger, both of Florida, and Mary Galvin of Manton, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Zesto Belle Courtright Morris.

Services were July 17 at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Paul Russell officiating. Interment was at the Sunset Memory Gardens, with military graveside services by the American Legion Post 15.

Ruby F. Mott

Ruby F. Mott, born July 12, 1930 in Tupelo, MS, died October 19, 1998 at the age of 68. Mrs. Mott was formerly employed with Burton-Dixie and then with Ingham Medical, retiring in 1993. She was loved by all.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Eugene; 1 daughter, Linda Risk of Eaton Rapids; 2 granddaughters, Charissa (Tony) Rendon and Shawna Risk; 3 great-grandchildren, Keeley, Devin, and Taylin Rendon; 5 brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 22, at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Lansing Chapel, with Pastor Dennis Taylor of Delta First Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, 416 Frandor, Suite 104, Lansing MI 48912, in memory of Mrs. Mott.
