Wendell J. Ripley

Wendell J. Ripley, 69, of Charlotte died March 27, 1998 at his residence.

Mr. Ripley was born in Charlotte, the son of James and Marie (Gates) Ripley. He was an auto mechanic at his place of business Ripley’s Garage for many years. He was affiliated with the First Congregational Church, Lodge #120, F&AM, and Hayes Green Beach Breathers Club. Mr. Ripley was a former member of Eaton County Shrine Club, Charlotte Civic Theatre, and played tuba in the community band. He served in the Army #486 Trans Truck Co.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Sarah Ripley of Charlotte, Kay (Kwadwo) Ekye-Addai of E. Lansing, JoAnn (Paul) Foster of San Antonio, Texas; three sons, James of Charlotte, Robert of Dallas, Texas, and Jon (Vicki) of Lansing; 11 grandchildren; sister, Mildred Bender of Brighton; and brother, Randy Ripley of Charlotte.

Services were March 30 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Bell Choir or Hayes Green Beach Breathers Club.

Ruth M. Robinson

Ruth Marie (DeMuth) Robinson, 92, of Charlotte died Aug. 27, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte.

Mrs. Robinson was born Oct. 31, 1905, in Dark County, the daughter of Ervin and Alice Neal. She was a practical nurse for many years.

She is survived by one son, Carl (Barbara) DeMuth of Charlotte; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Walter Neal of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

She was preceded in death by husbands, Bert DeMuth and George Robinson.

Services were Aug. 29 at the First Baptist Church, Charlotte, with Dr. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Medical Care Facility, 530 Beech St., Charlotte.

Bertha Irene Rochester

Bertha Irene Rochester, age 64, of Yellville, Arkansas, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died June 29, 1998. She was born September 13, 1933, the daughter of Henry and Jennie Moore. She worked at Eaton Technology of Eaton Rapids for 33 years. She is preceded in death by brother, Jack Moore; sister, Lillian Babcock; and stepmother, Mary Moore.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; 2 daughters, Marie (Don) Principato of Mt. Home, Arkansas, Cindy (Mike) Canfield of Eaton Rapids; son, Rick (Cindy) Rochester of Charlotte; 6 grandsons, Rob (Steph) and Kevin Barnes, Eric and Mark (Amanda) Principato, Ross and Kirby Rochester; 1 great-grandson, Robbie Barnes; 5 brothers, Henry Moore, Jr., William (Barbara) Moore, both of Florida, Floyd (Diane) Moore, Luzerne, Donald (Shirley) Moore, Beaverton; brother-in-law, Richard Babcock, Charlotte; 7 sisters, Henrietta (Estel) Rice, Bellevue, Dorothy (Charles) Powers, Tina (Jerry) Brophy both of Florida, Mary Ellen White, Cora “Suzie” (Russ) Cain, both of Lansing, Sarah Jean (Roger) Zimmerman of Arizona, Sue (Jerry) Hansen of Midland.

Funeral services were held July 3, 1998, at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Hamlin Township.

Iva Rogers

Iva (Weiler) Rogers, 88, of Charlotte and Bradenton, Fla. died Nov. 15, 1998 at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.

Mrs. Rogers was born on July 27, 1910 in Vermontville Township, the daughter of William and Gertie Barnum, and enjoyed an active and healthy life, having been born the fourth of six children in rural Eaton County, two of which are still living.

After graduated from Vermontville High School in 1928, she attended Eaton County Normal School, and commenced teaching in a one-room school in Bellevue Township, continuing the next two years at the Hallenbeck School in Vermontville Township.

She was married to Walter Weiler in 1930 and to this union was born their only son, Larry, June 5, 1936. While residing on their farm on Shaytown Road, the next ten years were very busy being crop, stock, and poultry farmers, and with Iva also maintaining a certified foster home for 16 different county and state dependent and neglected children for many years.

In 1945, due to the scarcity of teachers during the war, Iva was reinstated in her teacher career, where she taught sixth grade at Vermontville Public School for thirty more years, until retiring in 1975. It was during these years that she continued her education by correspondence classes, evening classes and summer school at M.S.U. for 10 consecutive years earning her Bachelor of Arts degree.

After retiring from teaching in 1975, Iva married S.D. Rogers and enjoyed many pleasant years on the farm, traveling, bowling, fishing, gardening and spending winters in Fla.

She had continued her community service as a member of Kalamo #399 Order of Eastern Star; member of American Association of Retired Persons; life member of Eaton County Association of Retired School Personnel; and life member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Joan) Weiler of Vermontville; grandsons, Jeff (Nicki) Weiler, and Robert (Christy) Weiler, both of Vermontville; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Bailey, Iva, and Brock Weiler and Chris Loveall; a stepdaughter, Katherine Hodgman of Charlotte; step grandchildren, Dianne Piepkow of Olivet and Phyllis Collins of Bradenton, Fla.; 7 step great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Alta (Vaughn) Williams of Ypsilanti and Ina Holton of Sunfield; many nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.

Iva was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Weiler June 20, 1973; and by her second husband, S.D. Rogers Oct. 7, 1993.

Services were held Nov. 20 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Jeffrey Bowman officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gresham United Methodist Church or Maple Valley Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Jonathan Perle Rogers

Jonathan Perle Rogers, 91, of Hastings died June 18, 1998 at Tendercare of Hastings.

Mr. Rogers was born July 30, 1906 in Charlotte, the son of George and Mary (Goodrich) Rogers. He attended Benton School. He married Pauline Pratt in December of 1934; she died in March 1935. He married Leona Dies on July 28, 1940; she died Nov. 5, 1996. He worked on the family farm, was employed at R.E.O. in Lansing as a machinist and for the Viking Corporation in the 1950s. Mr. Rogers moved to Thornapple Lake, Hastings, in the mid-1940s.

He is survived by one son, Forest G. (Betty) Rogers of Brookfield, Conn.; two daughters, Sharon DeWitt and Judy Joppie both of Hastings; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Pratt; his second wife, Leona Dies; and one sister, Gladys Hagh.

Services were June 23 at the Girrbach Funeral Home, Hastings, with the Rev. Kenneth R. Vaught officiating.

Harold N. Root

Harold N. Root, 89, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 23, 1998 at Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Root was born April 21, 1909, in Charlotte, the son of Albert and Lulu (Mitchell) Root. He worked as a farmer and was owner of Blue Ribbon Creamery and founder of Blue Ribbon egg farm.

He is survived by his wife, Frieda; daughter, Janice (Tony) Oien of Charlotte; two sons, Ronnie (Patricia) Root of Columbus, Texas, and Phil Root of Nokomis, Fla.; stepdaughter, Nancy (Don) Dilley of Portland; sister, Addie Parr of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leona Messimer in 1973, children, Betty Jean, Sharon Kay and Robert Neil in 1945, brother, Lawrence Root, and sister, Elsie Parr.

Funeral services were Sept. 25 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital.

Donald J. Rugg

Donald Joe Rugg, 39, of Vermontville died Feb. 4, 1998, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.

Mr. Rugg was born Dec. 2, 1958, in Battle Creek, the son of Donald and Sally Jo (McNees) Rugg. He was a supervisor/trainer for the Michigan Department of Corrections. He married Maureen Sullivan. He headed the boys’ Pee Wee league and coached girls’ softball t-ball leagues in Vermontville. He was an emergency medical technician for the Vermontville Fire Department.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen; two daughters, Jennifer and Stephanie; one son, Christopher; his mother, Sally Rugg of Vermontville; one sister, Tammy (Richard) Thompson of Charlotte; and two brothers, Keith (Allie) of Jackson and Tim (Jacquelyn) of Nashville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Edward Rugg in 1990.

Mass was held Feb. 7 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Fr. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment was Woodlawn Cemetery, Vermontville.

Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rugg Children’s Trust Fund.
