Richard R. Curtis

Richard R. “Dick” Curtis, 76, of Eaton Rapids died Sept. 4, 1997, unexpectedly at home.

Mr. Sulpher was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Grand Rapids. He was employed with Oldsmobile as a tool maker for the past 44 years and was an avid outdoorsman.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanore; two daughters, Jayne (Bill) Krawczynski of Harrison and Barbara (Alan) Herman of Lansing; two sons, Dennis (Neva) Sulpher and Jack D. (Betty Jo) Sulpher all of Eaton Rapids; 8 grandchildren; one brother, Tom Sulpher; two sisters, Margaret Knudsen of Berkley, and Grace Vander Vlucht of Detroit; and special niece and nephew, Autumn and Matthew Waterman.

Services were Sept. 9 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW National Home, the Eaton Rapids Marching Band, or the Crippled Children’s Fund.

Talbert L. Curtis

Talbert L. Curtis, 86, of Nashville died Sept. 4, 1997, at his home.

Mr. Curtis was born June 18, 1909, in Kalamo Township, the son of Wilbur and Amie (Means) Curtis. He was a dairy farmer all of his working years and during World War II he worked at Royal Coach in Hastings. He was a member of the Vermontville Bible Church and the Gideons. He and his wife wintered in Lake Wales, Fla. for 30 years and enjoyed traveling together.

He is survived by his daughters, Geneva Knoll of Nashville and Elsie (Red) Stephenson of White Water, Colo.; son, Vernon (Shirley) Curtis of Nashville; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Johnson.

Services were Sept. 8 at the Vermontville Bible Church with the Rev. Dan Smith officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermontville Bible Church or the Gideons.

Hector G. Dandurand

Hector G. Dandurand, 77, of Eaton Rapids died April 27, 1997 in Charlotte.

Mr. Dandurand was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Kankakee, Ill., the son of Oliver and Georgiana (Marissette) Dandurand. He retired from Dana Atlas Drop Forge in 1985 after 35 years of services and was a member of the Eaton Rapids American Legion Post #15.

He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Rhea; two step-daughters, Connie (Robert) Erickson of Holt and Peggy (Scott DeBaun) Schnepp of Olivet; two stepsons, James Schnepp and Earl (Elaine) Schnepp all of Eaton Rapids; eight step-grandchildren, Robert Pierce, Lisa Smith, Michael Smith, Deven and Nicole DeBaun, James “Jake” Schnepp and Thomas and Sarah Schnepp.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel.

Services were April 30 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Bennett Constantine, Celebrant of St. Peter Church officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Michael C. David

Michael C. David, 49, of Charlotte died April 26, 1997 in St. Helen.

Mr. David had lived in Charlotte since 1995.

He is survived by his wife, Lynnette; three daughters, Shellie Fruk of St. Helen, and Cheri Holbrook and Michelle David both of Lansing; two sons, Michael Brown of St. Helen and Michael David II of Perry; seven grandchildren; four brothers, Charles David of Grand Rapids, Garth David of Charlotte, Larry Briggs of St. Helen and William Briggs of Gladwin; and one sister, Ruth Ann Duffy of St. Helen.

A memorial services will be Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Lakeview Chapel, Park Lake. Arrangements were made by Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home, West Branch.

Robert H. Davis

Robert H. Davis, 73, of Honolulu, Hawaii, formerly of Charlotte died March 3, 1997.

Mr. Davis was a graduate of Charlotte High School. He served in the U.S. Marine corps from 1943-45, was past commander of Charlotte VFW Post 2406, past president of the Charlotte Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Shriners and numerous other organizations. He was the co-owner and operator of Davis & Sons Pontiac until moving to Hawaii to start a printing business in 1972.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; one son, Ronald of Oceanview, Hawaii; one brother, Roger Davis of Charlotte; one sister, Barbara Patton of Olivet; one half brother, Larry King of Needmore; and two nephews, Ralph and Paul Davis both of Charlotte.

A memorial service was held May 26, at the Charlotte VFW Post #4204.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW and ear-marked for any of his affiliated organizations or the American Cancer Society.

Robert C. Dean

Robert C. Dean, 68, of Nashville died Sept. 29, 1997, at Pennock Hospital, Hastings.

Mr. Dean was born in Kalamazoo the son of William and Evelyn (Wright) Dean. He attended Nashville schools. He was a tool and die setter for Lake Odessa Machine Products, retiring as foreman in 1992. Other employment includes tireman for Crandell Trucking of Charlotte, the Cuyler Trucking of Nashville, and Tire Recapper of Lansing. Mr. Dean was a member of the Barry County Antique Tractor Association. He enjoyed fishing, designing and building metal objects, working in his workshop, and many other things.

He is survived by his wife, Dorene; daughters, Marilyn (Glen) Wagner of Nashville, and Susan (Keith) Baker of Olivet; son, William R. (Nora) Dean of Nashville; and 6 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Evelyn Dean.

Services were Oct. 21 at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville, the Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Cremation will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry County Hospice.

Sidney W. Dean

Sidney W. Dean, 62, of Eaton Rapids died April 8, 1997.

Mr. Dean was born Nov. 27, 1934, in Norwood, Mo., the son of Sidney and Zettie (DeVault) Dean. He attended the Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church and was formerly employed at Diamond Reo. He was the owner and operator of Water Wonderland Landscaping Service in Eaton Rapids and served in the 101st Airborne.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Connie; two daughters, Penny Sue Dean of New Hampshire and Catherine Dean of Olivet; one son, Troy Dean of Eaton Rapids; one granddaughter, Tara Dean; and one brother, Charles (Mary Ann) Gallagher.

Services were April 12 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Dennis Perkins officiating. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Isabel E.J. DeFrates

Isabel E. J. DeFrates, 78, of Charlotte died April 1, 1997.

Mrs. DeFrates was born in Grand Junction, Colo., the daughter of Elwood and Hazel (Loveland) Kelly. She was a lifelong resident of Charlotte and a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her children, David (Margaret) of Charlotte, Douglas “Duke” of W. Covina, Calif., Patricia (Mike) Humphrey of Tucson, Ariz., and Michael (Cheryl) of Charlotte; one stepson, Phillip (Renee) of Sugar Island; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, in 1992; one brother, Robert Kelly in 1954; and one sister, Eleanor Morgan in 1992.

Memorial services are Tuesday, April 8, at 11 a.m., at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
