Bertha C. “Katy” DeMott
Bertha C. “Kary” DeMott, 71, of Bellevue died April 2, 1997, in Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo.
Mrs. DeMott was born Jan. 12, 1926, in Battle Creek, the daughter of Ralph and Mabel (Sayers) Lemon. She worked for the U.S. Post Office in Bellevue for 20 years, retiring in 1989. She married David DeMott on July 4, 1947, and moved to Bellevue. She was a member and clerk of the First Baptist Church for 35 years, Sunday school teacher and Cherub Choir director. She was active in the Historical Society, Cub Scouts, Blue Birds, Meal-On-Wheels and American Cancer Society Drive.
She is survived by her husband, David; two sons, Dennis (Linda) of Charlotte and Terry (Sheila) of Reed City; three daughters, Cathy (Dennis) Bartlett and Nancy (Paul) Cipcic both of Bellevue, and Cheryl (Bobby) McNeal of San Diego, Calif.; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were April 5 at the Bellevue First Baptist Church, with Pastor Donald Francis officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Bonnie C. DePriest
Bonnie Carrol DePriest, 57, of Charlotte died Dec. 30, 1996, as the result of an automobile accident.
Mrs. DePriest was born Oct. 4, 1939, in Charlotte, the daughter of Ordail and Ruth (Mitchell) Heinze. She worked in the office of Technology Resources as a Micro Technician for the State of Michigan. She had been a member of the Potterville Church of the Nazarene since childhood.
She is survived by her husband, Don; two daughters, Lynn (Doug) Dickinson and Terri (Juan) Suarez, both of Charlotte; son Thaddaeus Truman DePriest of Boynton Beach, Fla., six grandchildren, Sara Jo Tate, Michelle Lynn Dickinson, and Danielle Marie Dickinson, Zachariah Truman Suarez and Andres Carlos Suarez; four brothers, Arnold (Lou Ann) Heinze and Orville Heinze, both of Florida, and Francis (Veralee) Heinze and Richard (Anna) Heinze, both of Potterville; and sister, Rachel (Dick) Roan of DeTour.
Services were Jan. 2 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with the Rev. Robert Coen officiating. Interment was in Benton Township Cemetery in Potterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Potterville Church of the Nazarene.
C. Kenneth Dow
C. Kenneth Dow, 96, of Mulliken, died Aug. 19 at the Thornapple Manor, near Hastings.
Mr. Dow was born Jan. 17, 1901, in Sunfield Township, the son of Clarence and Nellie (Doyle) Dow. He was a lifetime area farmer who formerly held positions as Roxand Township treasurer, justice of the peace, school board member, and worked with the ASC.
Mr. Dow took great pride in his sesquicentennial farm, and following his sons and grandchildren in their various sports.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hildreth, two sons, Karl and Elwyn, two great-granddaughters, and his sister, Nelva Moore.
Surviving Mr. Dow are two sons, Kendall (Ruah) Dow of Kalamazoo and Durwood (Ardyth) Dow of Mulliken; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with the Rev. Don Woolum of the Mulliken United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandsons.
Freda L. Dowding
Freda Lucille Dowding, 89, died Sept. 24, 1997.
Mrs. Dowding was born Aug. 16, 1908, in Roseville, Ind., the daughter of Frank and Lottie (Schafer) Mohler. Her family relocated near Baldwin in 1912 and she finished school at the Care Settlement, then moved to Eaton Rapids to work in the woolen mills. She completed nurses training in the 1920s and began a nursing career in Eaton Rapids in the 1920s. She also worked at Hayes Green Beach Hospital and the Eaton County Medical Care Facility, both in Charlotte. She married Vern Dowding Aug. 31, 1928, and they lived and raised five children on their family farm at Narrow Lake.
She was active in her church and instrumental in the founding of the Albion Assembly of God and Olivet’s Faith Assembly of God.
She is survived by one daughter, Janice (Keith) Johnson of Taegu, Korea; three sons, Sam (Sally) of Raleigh, N.C., and Maurice “Skip” (Karen) and David (Rose), both of Springport; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Flora Lee of Watervliet, Pearl Nichols of Grand Rapids, and Pauline Darling of Albion; four brothers, including twins Dallas Mohler of Parma and Douglas Mohler of Eaton Rapids, and Walt Mohler of Watervliet and Virgil Mohler of Kalkaska.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern in 1988 and her youngest son, Roger (an Alaskan bush pilot) in 1993.
Services are today, Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. William Severance officiating. Interment will be in the Clarence Center Cemetery.

Mark L. Dowler
Mark Lewis Dowler, 90, of Charlotte, formerly of Zephyrhills, Fla., died April 13, 1997, at Eaton Manor.
Mr. Dowler was born Nov. 22, 1906, in Dimondale, the son of Hugh and Mary Dowler. He married Hazle Clark on Oct. 10, 1948, in Dimondale. He was a longtime resident of the Charlotte area before retiring to Zephyrhills, Fla. He worked as a crane operator and a farmer on his own farm.
He is survived by two stepsons, Ronald “Dick” (Cherie) Clark of Newcastle, Wyo., and Jock “Bucky” (Barbara) Clark of Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazle in 1996; one stepson, Donald Clark II; and two sisters, Ruth and Helen.
Graveside services were April 18 at the Dimondale Cemetery, with his grandson, Donald Morey officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Alyce Christine Dowling
Alyce Christine Dowling, 44, of Springport died Sept. 16, 1997.
Mrs. Dowling was born Sept. 22, 1952, in Dodgeville, Wisc., the daughter of Gerald L. and Delva B. (Christianson) Harris.
She attended the university of Wisconsin, Stout, in Menomonie, Wisc.
Mrs. Dowling married Richard Cornell Dowling on May 27, 1972. She was a life skills teacher for 19 years at Portland Middle School. She sponsored many activities within the middle school system, including Gourmet Club, Baby Think It Over, Foster Child for Portland Middle School, Spirit Shop, Recycling, Student Council, Student Advisory Committee, and the Seventh-Grade Quilt Project. She also was a member of several programs and committees.
Mrs. Dowling also was known as an avid supporter of the Portland Middle School Spring Fling, PMS community service projects, and the eighth-grade trip and sixth-grade winter camp.
She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter, Karin Christine; son, Thomas Cornell; mother, Delva Harris of Dodgeville, Wisc.; sister, Judith Mabel (Richard) Adams of Platteville, Wisc.; sister, Ann Marie (Richard) Covert of Naperville, Ill.; brother, Gene Harris of Dodgeville, Wisc.; brother, Allen M. (Carol) Harris of DeLand, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Martha E. Dowling Hudak-Wall of New Castle, Del., and Barbara J. Dowling Kinsling of Oley, Pa.; stepmother-in-law, Ruth Dowling of Wilmington, Del.
She was predeceased by her father, Gerald L. Harris; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Evelyn Cornell Dowling and Thomas Dowling III.
Funeral services were Sept. 20 at Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Peter R.K. Brenner and the Rev. Robert Doner officiating. Private interment will be in Eastside Cemetery, Dodgeville, Wisc., on Monday, Sept. 22. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Eaton Community Hospice, or the Alyce Harris-Dowling Scholarship Fund.
Edna L. Downer
Edna L. Downer, 85, formerly of Northville, died Jan. 17, 1997, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Downer was born Aug. 12, 1911, in Ovid, the daughter of Anthony and Lucy (Morse) Jorae. She was a 1927 graduate of Ovid High School and completed County Normal School in Ypsilanti. She taught school in Chelsea, Manchester, and the Wayne County rural schools. She married Gael Downer. She was a member of Northville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean Knauff of Charlotte and Ann Muir of Kingston, Ontario, Canada; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her sister-in-law, Mildred Jorae of Ovid.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gael in 1988.
There were no services.
The family was served by Houghton Chapel-Osgood Funeral Homes, Ovid.
