Gaylord C. Burkett
Gaylord C. Burkett, 76, of Eaton Rapids died April 11, 1997.
Mr. Burkett was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Eaton County, the son of Claude and Grace (Griffith) Burkett. He was a member of the Eaton Rapids Jehovah Witnesses Congregation and retired from Hager-Fox in 1993.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joni; two daughters, Brenda (Bruce) Maurer of Charlotte and Lola (James) Masters of Eaton Rapids; one son, Claude (Donna) Burkett of Oakfield, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Holland (Isabell) Burkett and Robert (Fern) Burkett, all of Bellevue; one sister, Kathryn Stamm of Hastings; one brother-in-law, Harry Augustine; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Augustine.
Services were April 12 at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Esta V. Burns
Esta V. Burns, 85, of Eaton Rapids died Dec. 3, 1997, in Lansing.
Mrs. Burns was born Nov. 14, 1912, in Clarksville, the daughter of Albert and May (Studt) Wigfield.
She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara McAdam of Jackson and Marjorie (Bill) Hartel of Potterville; three sons, David Burns of Eaton Rapids, Dennis (Janet) Burns of Lowell, and Philip (Faye) burns of Eaton Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thad Wigfield of Lowell and Wage Wigfield of Battle Creek; and one sister, Veneta Terrell of Saranac.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville.
Services were Dec. 6 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Pastor Dennis Perkins officiating. Interment followed at Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wesleyan Church of Eaton Rapids or Visiting Nurse Hospice.
Linda Lee Burt
Linda Lee (Shipman) Burt, 50, of Naperville, Ill., (formerly of Vermontville), died Aug. 1, 1997, at Edward Hospital in Illinois.
She was born in Hastings Nov. 13, 1946, the daughter of Paul and Louise Shipman. She had been a resident of Naperville since 1975 and was employed as a commercial banker at Continental Bank of Chicago and Bank of America. She also attended St. Johns Episcopal Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Amy Lynn of Naperville, and three brothers, Duane Shipman of Vermontville, Gary Shipman of Stugis, and Mark Shipman of Mason.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services were Aug. 6 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield. Interment was at Sunfield Cemetery.

Denzil Burton
Denzil Burton, 70, of Mulliken died June 1, 1997, at a Lansing hospital, following a long illness.
Mr. Burton was born April 2, 1927, in Seyco, Ken., the son of Evans and Myrtle (Perkins) Burton. He was a retired Oldsmobile (Plant 2) employee.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; two daughters, Rebecca (Bill) Reed of Sunfield and Tamara (Tim) Kelley of Grand Ledge; five sons, Larry of Lansing, Dennis (Lisa) of Grand Marais, Minn., Ricky of Durand, and Troy and Todd at home; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his mother and father-in-law, Cleora and Angus Berry of Grand Ledge.
He was preceded in death by his grandson; his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.
Services were June 3 at the Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Wayne Compton officiating. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.
William R. Butler
William R. “Bill” Butler, 81, of Grand Ledge passed away Nov. 20, 1997, at his residence.
Mr. Butler was a member of the Eagle Lodge #1039 and DeWitt Moose Lodge #2291. He retired from Motor Wheel in 1976. He was a Veteran of World War II, where he served in the Sea B’s. Mr. Butler was a lifetime area farmer.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine; one son, Allan (Barbara) Butler of Lansing; two daughters, Gloria Moon of Grand Ledge and Rebecca (Richard) Rogers of Trumbell, Conn.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, June (Richard) King of Charlotte and Marian Wright of Woodland; and some dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his two sons, Dave and William; two brothers, Tom and Phillip Butler.
Services were Nov. 24 at the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment was at the Wacousta Cemetery.

Duane Byron
Duane “Papa” Byron, 60, of Eaton Rapids died Nov. 15, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Byron was born Dec. 12, 1937, in Eaton Rapids, the son of Eugene and Eula (Elston) Byron. He was a member of Eaton Rapids American Legion Post #1283.
He is survived by his wife, Verna; one daughter, Sherry (Jeff) Crawford of Eaton Rapids; two sons, Mark of Arizona and Glen Byron of Eaton Rapids; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; brother, Jim (Joyce) of Eaton Rapids; four sisters, Rosie (Glen) Love, Ivagene (Wallace) Peters, and Rena (Bob) Gillett, all of Eaton Rapids, and Alberta VanAtter of Onondaga; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by Tammy Camp and one granddaughter, Coty Byron.
Services were Nov. 19 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery, Hamlin Township, with military honors presented by American Legion Post #1283.

Emma A. Byron
Emma Ardella Byron, 64, of Eaton Rapids died Jan. 14, 1997, in Lansing.
Mrs. Byron was born June 16, 1932, in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Floyd and Genevieve (Thuma) Kikendall. She had been a nurse’s aide at the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital.
She is survived by one daughter, Susan Putman of Eaton Rapids; four sons, Richard, Floyd (Peggy), and Raymond, all of Eaton Rapids, and Michael (Teresa) of Dimondale; her father, Allen Eugene “Jake” Byron of Eaton Rapids; eight grandchildren, James and Christopher Putman, Floyd Jr. and Lucinda Byron, Corey and Lacey Byron, Raymond Jr. and Rachelle Byron.
Services were Jan. 17 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Stephen Klink officiating. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Jake Byron
Jake Byron, 67, died March 18, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Byron was born Aug. 6, 1929, in Dimondale, the son of Eugene and Eula (Elston) Byron. He had been formerly employed with Allied and Mobil Oil and was in the construction business, specializing in building pole barns. In later years, he farmed his own land.
He is survived by one daughter, Susan Anne Putman of Eaton Rapids; four sons, Richard, Floyd (Peggy), and Raymond, all of Eaton Rapids, and Michael (Teresa) of Dimondale; eight grandchildren, James and Christopher Putman, Floyd Jr. and Lucinda Byron, Corey and Lacey Byron, and Raymond Jr. and Rachelle Byron; four sisters, Ivagene (Wallace) Peters, Rena (Bob) Gillett, Rosie (Glen) Love, all of Eaton Rapids, and Alberta VanAtter of Onondaga; and two brothers, Jim (Joyce) of Eaton Rapids and Duane (Verna) of Arizona.
Services were March 21 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, with Pastor Stephen Klink officiating. Interment was in the Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
