Neva M. Baumer
Neva M. Baumer, 78, of Plymouth died July 17, 1997, in South Lyon.
Mrs. Baumer was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Lansing. She was a homemaker. She came to the Plymouth community in 1959 from Eaton Rapids. She attended the First United Methodist Church.
She was a life member of the BPOE Vivians #1780, Plymouth. She was a past member of the Eastern Star in Eaton Rapids.
She is survived by her daughters, Beverly (Tom) Appling of Marysville and Sharon (Rick) Spencer of South Lyon; one son, David (Kathleen) of Westland; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Harris of Eaton Rapids.
Services were July 19 at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home, Plymouth, with the Rev. Pauline Hart officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Elk’s Crippled Children’s Fund in Plymouth.
Evison Beck Jr.
Evison J. Beck Jr., 71, of Charlotte died Nov. 20, 1997.
Mr. Beck was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Hastings, the son of Evison Sr. and Vera (Woodard) Beck. He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and had been a lineman supervisor for Consumers Power for 40 years. He married Betty Rae Owen Dec. 31, 1985. He was a former member of American Legion Post #45, Hastings.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; five daughters, Linda (Douglas) Klont of Eaton Rapids, LaRae (Roger) Smith, Lona (John) Houston, and Brenda (John) Bly, all of Charlotte, and Loretta (John) Lyon of Eaton Rapids; four sons, Evison (Janet) Beck III of Charlotte, Michael (Betsy) Beck of Sharon, Conn., Ted (Sue) King of Olivet, and James King of Olivet; three sisters, Alice (Harland) Babcock of Ludington, Ruth (Hugh) Bronson of New Mexico, and Anna Cairns of Hastings; 29 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Beverly; and an infant son.
Services were Nov. 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Pastor Mike Knauff officiating.

Ronald J. Beck
Ronald J. Beck, 64, died April 15 at his residence after an extended illness. Mr. Beck was born in Pigeon, Mich., the son of Walter and Freda (Spiehs) Beck, and had been an Olivet resident for six years, coming from Ada, Ohio.
He was a 1950 graduate of Pigeon High School, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan in 1958-59. He was a professor of literary criticism and esthetic theory, having taught at the Detroit Institute of Technology from 1959-66. He received his education doctorate from Wayne State University in 1966, taught at Oregon College of Education from 1966 to 1969, Ohio Northern University from 1969-90, and at Olivet College from 1993-95.
An emeritus professorship was bestowed on him from Ohio Northern University in 1994. He published many articles during his tenure at Ohio Northern.
He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a member of the Modern Language Association and the American Society for 18th-Century Studies. His hobbies were reading, listening to music and traveling.
Surviving are his wife, Florence (Schulze) Beck; a son, Roderick Beck of Hoboken, N.J., and many cousins.
Funeral services were April 19 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Clark Hock, Dr. Claude Smith and Professor Robert Lietz officiating. Interment was in Olivet Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Good Samaritan Hospice Care or the Olivet Congregational Church.
William N. Beebe
William N. Beebe, 67, of Marion, formerly of Charlotte died April 5, 1997.
Mr. Beebe was born in Reed City, the son of Raymond and Ada (Carpenter) Beebe and had been a resident of Marion since 1980 going there from Charlotte. He had been employed as a foreman at the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors, Lansing, retiring in 1980 after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Florence (Anderson); five sons, Ernie (Pat) McCarn of Laingsburg, Butch (Dawn) McCarn of Marion, Gary (Vicki) McCarn of Charlotte, Thomas (Mary Ann) Beebe of Ashton and Don Beebe of Marion; five daughters, Deb (Ron) Howard of Charlotte, Norma (Duane) Sikkema of Marion, Janette (Hank) DeRuiter of Olivet, Jennifer (Bob) Briggs and Pam (Roger) Hennings all of Charlotte; 31 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters; and four brothers.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie (Kelley) in 1960; one son, Steven Beebe in 1982; two granddaughters, Sarah Beebe in 1994 and Ericka Jo Peavey in 1978; and one brother.
Services were April 9 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Peter R.K. Brenner officiating. Interment was in the Needmore Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Munson Hospital Cardiac Unit, Traverse City.
Lloyd M. Beers Jr.
Lloyd Maynard Beers Jr., 26, of Vermontville died in an automobile accident June 11.
Mr. Beers was born April 6, 1971, in Charlotte, the son of Lloyd M. and Loretta (Spidel) Beers. He worked as an agriculture millright at Johnson Systems in Marshall, and he was the light-heavyweight champion in arm-wrestling at the Maple Syrup Festival in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Sue (Rugg) Beers, son, Clayton David Beers, and daughter, Rachelle Renee Beers of Vermontville; mother, Loretta Beers of Bellevue; father, Lloyd (Pam) Beers Sr. of Charlotte; brother, Franklin (Tonia) Beers of Battle Creek; half-sisters, Alice Beers and Brenda (Joey) Beers of Burr Oak; grandmother, Jessie Beers of Bellevue; grandfather, Franklin (Zelpha) Spidel of Alabama; parents-in-law, Terry and Lorry Rugg of Vermontville; sisters-in-law, Mary (Brad) Rugg of Potterville and Amanda (Steve) Larie of Big Rapids; brother-in-law, Willis (Karrie) Rugg of Vermontville; and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Maynard Beers.
Funeral services were June 14 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Scott Collier and Dan Shinaparger officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Joan Bennett
Joan (Shaw) Bennett, 64, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Charlotte died Jan. 30, 1997, at Rex Hospital of Raleigh, N.C.
Mrs. Bennett was born Feb. 25, 1932, in Chester Township, the youngest of four daughters to Don and Minnie Shaw.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer; one son, David and his wife, and a granddaughter of Raleigh, N.C.; and two sisters, Carrie Satterly and Mary Lord both of Charlotte.
Services were Feb. 3 at Sugg Chapel, Raleigh, N.C. Interment was in the Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
Grace Blake
Grace Blake passed away June 21, 1007, at the Michigan Capital Medical Center, Lansing, at the age of 90.
She was born April 18, 1907, in Rector, Ark., daughter of George and Ida Mae (Cummings) Stallings. Mrs. Blake retired from MSU in 1973, working in the Laundry Department. She spent the last six years living at the River Inn Adult Foster Care Home in Sunfield, Mich. She is survived by daughter, Mona Rose of Portland; granddaughter, Sharon Shoup of Colo.; grandson, Robert Varney of Sunfield; great-granddaughter, Karen Varney of Holt; sister, Mary Lucille Butler of Ark.; and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held June 23, 1997 at the Danby Twp. Cemetery, Mulliken, with the Rev. Harris Hoekwater of the Sunfield United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements were made by the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.
Thomas E. Bockenstette
Thomas Edward Bockenstette, 69, of Charlotte died April 27, 1997.
Mr. Bockenstette was born Nov. 30, 1927, in Covington, Ken., the son of Francis and Angela Bockenstette. He was an area sales and marketing representative for Standard Oil Co. He was a former club champion of the Charlotte Country Club. He served his country in the Army as an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper. He pitched semi-pro baseball while in the Army.
He is survived by one daughter, Nancy of Duck Lake; two sons, Patrick of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Michael of Spring Lake; four grandchildren; two sisters, Norma (Milton) Richardson of St. Clair Shores and Dolores (Ralph) Lake of Ft. Mojave, Ariz.; and two brothers, Francis (Edith) of Mt. Clemens and Robert (Regina) of St. Clair Shores.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 1996.
The memorial mass was April 30 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Father Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home.
