Evelyn A. Carlson
Evelyn Alice Carlson, 79, of Irons, formerly of Muskegon, died Feb. 27, 1997, at Tendercare in Traverse City.
Mrs. Carlson was born Oct. 23, 1917, in Cleveland Township, the daughter of Benjamin and Frances “Fannie” (Bartunek) Wilsey. She married Carl Carlson May 28, 1939, in Traverse City, and lived in Suttons Bay for many years before moving to Muskegon, where she was employed at a greenhouse. She and Carl moved to Irons in 1977.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty (Jim) Risden of Wellston, Charlotte “Jo” (John) Suzor of Hudson, Fla., and Bonnie (James) Wahr of Irons; one son, Charles (Barbara) of Muskegon; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beulah Thayer, Jean (Fred) Newman, and Dorothy (George) Rohde, all of Traverse City; two brothers, Ben Wilsey of South Haven and C. Jesse (Lois) Smith of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and Leonard Wilsey; and three sisters, Eleanor Revold, Marie Witte, and Helen “June” Morton.
Services were March 1 at the Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay, with the Rev. John Tupper officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Keswick.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little Mary’s Hospitality House, Wellston, or the charity of one’s choice.
Jewell E. Carter
Jewell Eileen Carter, 76, of Shady Cove, Ore., formerly of Charlotte died March 26, 1997.
Mrs. Carter was born July 31, 1920, in Pocahontas, Ark., the daughter of Marion and Molly (Johnson) Friar.
She is survived by three sons, James Jr. (Betty) of VanBuren, Ark., Clayton (Robbie) of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, and Ronald of Medford, Ore.; three daughters, Monica (Frank) Corso of Wausau, Fla., Sandra (Jess) Brite of Shady Cove, Ore., and Margo (Robert) Setnor of Morro Bay, Calif.; and one sister, Lenore Merrick of Battle Creek.
Graveside services were March 29 at the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte, with Pastor Mark Woodbury officiating. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
John T. Carter
John T. Carter, 53, of Charlotte died Dec. 14, 1997.
Mr. Carter was born Feb. 27, 1944, in Clarion, Penn., the son of John and Betty (Smith) Carter. He was a day specialist in the forming department at Owens-Illinois and a member of the Charlotte Country Club.
He is survived by two daughters, Rhonda (Ron) Burl of Holt and Connie (John) Strauss of Mt. Prospect, Ill.; one brother, Randall Reddinger; one sister, Brenda Jane Fuller both of Clarion; and two grandchildren.
Services were Dec. 17 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Pastor Mark Booth officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Virgil R. Carter
Virgil R. Carter, 57, of Flint, formerly of Charlotte, died June 20, 1997, at Genesys Health Park, Flint, after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Carter was born May 30, 1940, in Charlotte, the son of Harold and Irene (Tyler) Carter. He had been a longtime resident of Boone and Ellsworth, Iowa, returning to Michigan where he had lived in Lansing a short time and had been a Flint resident for one year. He was a truck driver and construction worker, retiring about one year ago due to ill health.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Colleen (Bruce) Fisher of Nashville and Rae Jane (Frank) Cortright of Olivet; four step daughters, Linda (Robert) Mason of Midland, Cyndy Anderson of Flint, Donna (Darold) O’Conner of Boone, Iowa, and Lawana Egland of Ellsworth, Iowa; two step sons, Jon (Jackie) Laube of Williams, Iowa, and David Laube of Ellsworth; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother, Irene Whitaker of Charlotte; two sisters, Jaquelyn (David) Ames and Connie (Herb) Ames both of Charlotte; and three brothers, Steve (Diane) Whitaker of Bellevue, Rod (Vicki) Whitaker of Charlotte, and Dan (Michelle) Whitaker of Potterville.
Graveside services were June 24 at the Center Eaton Cemetery, Charlotte, with the Rev. Michael Fuller officiating. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Thelma M. Cash
Thelma M. Cash, 79, of Battle Creek, formerly of Olivet died Feb. 21, 1997, at the Mercy Pavilion, Battle Creek, after a long illness.
Mrs. Cash was born in Midland and was a long time resident of Battle Creek, having also lived in Olivet and Colorado for a number of years. She was a 1935 graduate of Charlotte High School and a 1939 graduate of Western Michigan University. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in West Branch, Reading, and Battle Creek. she was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, Battle Creek.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William; two sons, Steve of Paw Paw, and Thomas of Battle Creek; one daughter, Mary Ann Miller of Eaton Rapids; one grandson, Joseph Miller; and one sister, Mary Myers of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by one son, John Cash in 1991, and two brothers.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services were Feb. 26 at St. Philip Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. William Fitzgerald officiating. Inurnment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

William L. Cash
William L. Cash, 77, of Battle Creek, formerly of Olivet, died Oct. 19, 1997 at the Battle Creek Health System, Community Site after an extended illness.
Mr. Cash was born Jan. 24, 1920 in Battle Creek. He had been a lifelong area resident having lived in Battle Creek and also Olivet, with the exception of an 11 year period that he had lived in Colorado. Mr. Cash was a graduate of Olivet High School and he attended Argubright Business College in Battle Creek. He had worked for Clark Equipment Co., Battle Creek from where he retired in 1982 after 30 total years of service. He was a member of the Charlotte Lions Club and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Miller of Eaton Rapids; two sons, Stephen Cash and Thomas Cash of Battle Creek; and one grandson.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Burns) Cash; and son, John Charles Cash.
Cremation has taken place. Services were held Oct. 23 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Pastor Bob Homan officiating. Interment of cremains in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Group of one’s choice.
Noma A. Catlin
Noma A. Catlin, 89, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died April 30, 1997, in Naples, Fla.
Mrs. Catlin was born March 27, 1908, in Barryton, the daughter of Arthur and Zepha (Williams) Simon.
She is survived by one daughter, Zeda Welch of Naples, Fla.; one son, Theo (Jennine) Catlin of Ionia; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances (Edwin) Carpenter of Potterville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest, and two sisters, Segrid Vedder-King and Gena Simon.
Services were May 6 at the Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with John Piercefield officiating. Interment was in the Meadowbrook Cemetery.
Gertrude Chamberlain
Gertrude Chamberlain, 97, of Dimondale died May 10, 1997.
Mrs. Chamberlain was born March 21, 1900, in Bessemer, the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Bawden. She was employed by Charlotte Public Schools as an accompanist for the high school chorus under the direction of Darrell Cook and was the original organist for the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte. She had been active in musical circles all her life. She was a former teacher in Hesperia and Muskegon Heights, life member of Charlotte O.E.S. #218, Past Matron of Hastings O.E.S. #7, member of the First Congregational Church of Charlotte and its Mary Martha Circle, and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.
She is survived by four daughters, Beverly (Gordon) Meeder of Potterville, Joyce (Gary) Shirkey of Springfield, Mo., Sue (James) Huffman of Bentonville, Ark., and Ruth Ann Sigler of Novi; one son, Richard of Haslett; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Florence Marble of Hastings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyman.
Services were May 14 at the First Congregational Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. William Colson and the Rev. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment was in the Dimondale Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
