Don H. Gutchess

Don H. Gutchess, 75, of Charlotte died April 29, 1997, at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.

Mr. Gutchess was born March 4, 1922, in Nashville, the son of Samuel and Matie (Sheldon) Gutchess. He graduated from Charlotte High School and was in the artillery during World War II. After the war he was a machinist at Eaton Stamping in Battle Creek and at Standard Stamping in Nashville. He was a member of the Nashville VFW Post #8260 and Hastings Eagles.

He is survived by one brother, Von Gotchess of Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and special friend and companion for 22 years, Joan Harwood of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Services were May 1 at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville, with Chaplain Richard Genther officiating. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nashville VFW #8260.

Charles E. Hadley III

Charles “Chuckie” Edward Hadley III, 20, of Charlotte died Nov. 25, 1997.

Mr. Hadley was born Nov. 16, 1977, in Charlotte, the son of Charles E. Hadley II and Wendy Feldpausch. He was a 1996 graduate of Charlotte High School and received a Scholastic Aptitude Test scholarship. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Charlotte.

He is survived by his parents, Charles (Tiva) Hadley II of Hohenwald, Tenn., and his mother, Wendy (Larry Pingle) Feldpausch of Charlotte; one sister, Tia Hadley; two brothers, Jeremiah Hadley and Ty Hadley; his grandparents, Clare and Joyce Wilmore, Charles E. and Beverly Hadley, and Millie Palacios; his great-grandmother, Anne Wright; and special friend, Amanda Whitson.

Services were Dec. 1 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. John Bookshaw officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made through the First Lutheran Church, Charlotte.

Donald Lewis Halbeisen

Donald Lewis Halbeisen, 83, of Charlotte died Oct. 20, 1997.

Mr. Halbeisen was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Carmel Township, the son of Augustus and Mary Anna (Deere) Halbeisen. He was a farmer, as well as working for Eaton Stamping for 20 years. He was also a Valley school board treasurer in the mid-1960s. He married Catherine Henry on Dec. 26, 1942.

He is survived by Catherine, his wife of 54 years; two daughters, Mary Ann Halbeisen and Katy (Doug) Shumaker, both of Charlotte; four sons, Stephen (Valli) Halbeisen, Dennis (Bonnie) Halbeisen, Ian Halbeisen, all of Charlotte, and Alan (Linda) Halbeisen of Ada; 12 grandchildren; a brother, Robert Halbeisen of Birmingham; sisters, Dorothy Briggs of Grand Rapids and Emma (Mrs. Joseph) Halbisen of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Agatha (Mrs. Max) Halbeisen of Charlotte.

Funeral services were Oct. 23 at the Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Interment was in West Carmel Cemetery.

Donations may be made to the Charlotte Public Library or Hayes Green Beach Hospital.

Durwood N. Hale

Durwood N. Hale, 62, of Charlotte died Feb. 14, 1997.

Mr. Hale was born June 28, 1934, in Charlotte, the son of Robert and Margaret (Enell) Hale. He was a supervisor at Owens-Illinois glass factory until 1981 and also for Nationwide Security until his retirement in 1995.

He is survived by his wife, Esther; two sons, Scott (Tessie) Hale of Holland and Lawrence Hale of Warren; one daughter, Robin (William) Eaton of Charlotte; two stepsons, Richard Clark of Battle Creek and Daniel Clark of Olivet; four stepdaughters, Cheryl (Alan) Sebastian of Marshall, Connie (Martin) Kill, Julie Sine, and Penny Roush all of Olivet; two brothers, Robert (Germaine) Hale of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Melvin (Corene) Hale of Nashville; and 24 grandchildren.

Services were Feb. 17 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Richard Garn officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Stanley L. Hale

Stanley L. Hale, 75, of Charlotte died Sept. 23, 1997, at his Roxand Township home.

Mr. Hale was born March 4, 1922, in Danby Township, the son of Ilo and Mabelle (MyIntyre) Hale. He was a retired Federal Forge worker and a member of the N.R.A. His hobby was traveling, which he did for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Etta; one son, Ron of Charlotte; one daughter, Joan (Larry) King of Charlotte; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were Sept. 25 at Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Woolum officiating. Arrangements were made by Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.

Luella E. Hall

Luella E. Hall, 91, of Eaton Rapids died Nov. 4, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.

Mrs. Hall was born Dec. 6, 1905, in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Drake) Lease. She attended both the First United Methodist and First Congregational churches of Eaton Rapids. She had been employed with Horner Woolen Mills and retired from Miller Dairy Farms in 1971. She was a member of the Rocking Chair Deserters and their Mad Hatter Band.

She is survived by one daughter, Dolores “Dee” (Robert) Hazel of Mason; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine Walsh of Albion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; one sister, Fannie Woods; and four brothers, Everett, Don, Maxwell, and Roscoe Lease.

Services were Nov. 7 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Robert Betts officiating. Interment was in Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice or Arthritis Foundation.

Ralph L. Hanchett

Ralph Levi Hanchett, 87, of Nashville died April 8, 1997, at Thornapple Manor, Hastings.

Mr. Hanchett was born April 11, 1909, in Ypsilanti, the son of Foster and Mabel (Proctor) Hanchett. He attended school in Plymouth and moved to the Battle Creek area after. He married Nina Coffman in Hastings on June 17, 1934. He farmed most of his life and raised cattle and milk cows. He also worked at Eaton Manufacturing and in later years worked at the Nashville Gravel Company. He was a member of the Farm bureau and the Grange.

He is survived by his wife, Nina; one daughter, Darlene Hughes of Nashville; two granddaughters, Kathi (Bob) Schroder of Bellevue and Kaye (Ed) Herrera of San Bernardino, Calif.; two great-grandsons, Wyatt and Tanner Schroder; and one nephew, Ted Hanchett of New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett Hanchett, Clifford Hanchett and Harry Miller; and one sister, Ilda Hanchett.

Services were April 11 at the Maple Valley Chapel-Genther Funeral Home, Nashville, with the Rev. Don Roscoe officiating. Interment was in the Ellis Cemetery, Lacey. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Christy W. Hansen

Christy W. Hansen, 86, of Charleston, S.C., died Oct. 29, 1997, in a local nursing facility.

Mr. Hansen was born May 13, 1911, in Trufont, the son of Martin and Marie (Rassmusen) Hansen. He was a 1928 graduate from the University of Michigan. He was a Presbyterian and a retired mechanical engineer with Westvaco. Mr. Hansen was a member of the Elks, Home Health Services, Papermill Athletic Association, Westvaco Retiree Association, University of Michigan Alumni, and the American Legion Greenville Post.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathy E. Holcomb of North Charleston, S.C. and Georgia J. Hoppmann of Charleston, S.C.; two sons, David M. Hansen of Clemson, S.C. and Kirby B. Hansen of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren; one brother, Jens. B. Hansen of Ariz.; and five sisters, Jane Rotier, Jean Casault, and Sandra Lyon all of Charlotte, Sally Stowe of California, and Sue Harkness of Connecticut.

Services were Oct. 31 in Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Charles L. Harmon

Charles Lee Harmon, 33, of Lansing formerly of Charlotte died Aug. 16, 1997, in Lansing as the result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Harmon was born July 22, 1964, in Charlotte, the son of Robert and Marie (Uhl) Harmon and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a self-employed repairman and yard care worker.

He is survived by one son, Eric of Charlotte; his parents, Robert and Marie Harmon of Charlotte; his fiancé, Angela King, and her children, Misty, Starr, and Christopher King, all of Lansing; two sisters, Penny (Robert) Granger and Dawn (James) Morse, both of Charlotte; seven brothers, Lonnie (Jane) of Missouri, Jack of St. John’s, Jeffery (Molly) of Harrison, Byron of Lansing, and Dean (Cindy), David, and Christopher (Leisa), all of Charlotte, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert, and a sister, Roxanne Marie.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services were Aug. 20 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte.
