Pauline B. Larsen

Pauline B. Larsen, 82, of Charlotte died May 21, 1997.

Mrs. Larsen was born July 29, 1914, in Ionia County, the daughter of Thomas Edlin and Grace DeGraw. She had worked on the line at General Motors.

She is survived by her husband, Vincent; one daughter, Susan (Terry) Tast of Charlotte; one son, Michael (Mary) Larsen of Dowingtown, Penn.; three grandchildren; three sisters, Marjorie White and Irene Edlin both of Belding, and Ethlyn (Norman) Kimble of Ionia; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were May 24 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Easton Cemetery, Ionia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Margaret E. Lavengood

Margaret Elaine Lavengood, 79, of Charlotte died July 31, 1997, at Michigan Capital Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus, Lansing after an extended illness.

Mrs. Lavengood was born in Flint, the daughter of Michael and Helen (Kokinda) Patrick and lived in Charlotte for 50 years, coming from Marshall. She had been a secretary at the Air-Way Manufacturing Co., in Olivet from where she retired about 14 years ago. She was a member of the Maple City VFW Post #2406 Auxiliary, Charlotte.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara (Ronald) LeSeney of Lansing; one son, Roger (Susan) Lavengood of Grand Ledge; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Patrick and Michael Patrick of Flint; and 2 sisters, Helen Dubaj of Mt. Morris and Mary Mitoraj of Flint.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Biron “Barney”, one daughter, Sharon Wilson, and one son, Larry.

Services were held Aug. 4 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Pastor W.J. Amundsen officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Edgar W. Laverty

Edgar Wheaton Laverty, 75, of Saginaw, formerly of Charlotte, died May 6, 1997, at St. Francis Home, Saginaw, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Laverty was born Oct. 21, 1921, the son of Clyde and LaDana Laverty in Potterville. He grew up in Potterville and Charlotte where he lived most of his life. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II, then was employed at Recordio Corporation, Wilcox-Gay, then retired from Owens-Illinois in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Jacklyn; four daughters, Michelle of Saginaw, Lisa (Roger) Kenyon of Ft. Wayne, Ind., Dana (Robert) Schrubbe of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Linda (Dan) VanDorpe of Charlotte; one stepson, Rodney Ebersole of Culver, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle (Russell) Sparks of Frankfort, Ind.; six nieces; one nephew; and his lifelong friend, Arlie Dimond of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Saums and Irma Newman.

He was a life member of VFW Post #2406 and American Legion Post #42.

Services were May 10 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA-Hospice Partners in Caring, Saginaw.

Harley F. Lawhead

Harley F. Lawhead, 88, of Pentwater, formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 19, 1996, at his home.

Mr. Lawhead was born June 15, 1908, in Charlotte, the son of William and Bessie (Love) Lawhead. He was a 1925 graduate of Charlotte High School and a graduate of the Michigan State University School of Civil Engineering. He was a member of the Pentwater Men’s Service Club, Historical Society, and Pentwater Yacht Club. He also served on the Pentwater Zoning and Cemetery boards.

He is survived by one daughter, Mary (Paul) Kline; two sisters, Fern (Donald) DeZeeuw and Atha Carter; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Coral (Shaw) in 1981, his wife Madora (Bieger) in 1987, three sons, Charles, Richard and William; and one grandson, John Kline and sister, Alta Rae Frace.

A memorial service will be held June 15 in Pentwater.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pentwater Methodist Church.

Bernadine E. Leatherbery

Bernadine E. Leatherbery, 81, died Dec. 29, 1996, in Lansing.

Ms. Leatherbery was born Mar. 23, 1915, in Eaton County, the daughter of Henry and Nettie (Taylor) Peck. She retired from Fisher Body in April 1977, working in the Quality Control and Paint Depts. We would like to thank Haven and her girls for the exceptional love and care that mother received at Grandma’s Home Sweet Home. Also, Becky from the visiting nurses. You will always be very special in our hearts for your exceptional caregiving…Thank you!

She is survived by three children, Merwin C. (Yvonne Kettner) and Sharon A. (Rodger Garnant), both of Charlotte, and Lyle E. (Alisa Elston) of Lansing; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Larsen of Eaton Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were Jan. 2 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Mother, your feisty spirit will live on in our hearts forever and ever.

In lieu of flowers, we know mother would appreciate a contribution to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 1713, Ann Arbor, MI 48106.

Carl M. Lehman

Carl M. Lehman, 86, of Bellevue, retired funeral director, businessman, and community leader, died Nov. 25, 1997, in Lansing after being stricken in his car in Bellevue.

Mr. Lehman was taken to Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte and then transported to Michigan Capital Medical Center, Lansing.

He was born Aug. 27, 1911 in Woodland, the son of Ora and Effie (Cotton) Lehman. He graduated from Woodland High School and the Worsham Institute of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army in graves registration during World War II and was an embalmer in both England and France.

He came to Bellevue from Woodland in 1940 to work for the Volney O. Johnson Funeral Home and operated it as the Johnson-Lehman Funeral Home from 1940-49. The business was established in 1856 as the Norton H. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home (father of Volney) and is registered as a Michigan Centennial business. It was known as the Lehman Funeral Home from 1949-75, when he sold it to Shaw Funeral Home of Battle Creek and is presently operated as the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel. he also concurrently operated the Lehman Furniture Store, Bellevue, retiring in 1975 and was one of the few remaining dual funeral home/furniture store operators in Michigan, which was very common earlier in this century. He also operated an ambulance service in Bellevue for many years and later served as a volunteer on the Bellevue Rescue Squad. He married Pauline Douse March 22, 1941, in Nashville.

He was a member of and recognized as a 50-year Michigan Mortuary Science licensee by the Michigan Funeral Director’s Association.

He was active in the Bellevue community, serving as a trustee on the village council for 13 years, including two years as its president. He was a member and past president of the Bellevue Lions and commercial clubs and the chamber of commerce. He was also a member of the Evangel Christian Church, Charlotte.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline; two sons, Gary (Irma) of Quincy and Brian (Debbie) of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Hildred Chase of Coats Grove; and one brother, Ronald Lehman of Woodland.

Services were Nov. 29 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church and Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home-Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Lions Sight Conservation Fund or Evangel Christian Church.

Edward E. LePage

Edward E. LePage, 87, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, died Feb. 9, 1997.

Mr. LePage was a native of Michigan who spent his entire business career with the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. He started as a store clerk in 1931 and retired in 1973 as vice-chairman of the board of directors. He managed the Charlotte A&P store from 1936 to 1946.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene; one daughter, Margaret Ann (Lou) Denhof; four grandsons, Scott (Terri), Mark, Steven, and David; and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Nicholas.

Memorial services were Feb. 12 in Naples. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Ralph Lett Jr.

Ralph Lett Jr., 67, of Potterville died Sept. 20, 1997.

Mr. Lett was born July 22, 1930, in Benton Township, the son of Ralph and Mary (Shaver) Lett. He worked at final assembly at Diamond Reo, retired from Oldsmobile in 1993, and worked on the farm. He was a member of the Potterville United Methodist Church and had served in the US Army (during the Korean War from 1951-53) in Japan with the 382nd Hospital Unit as a Corporal Corman. Mr. Lett was instrumental in creating the Field of Dreams Baseball Field on Island Highway. He was the 4th generation of Letts to live on the same farm.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Janice Endres of Potterville; three sons, Chuck (Shirley) of Charlotte, Steven (Robin) of Potterville, and Jerry (Patty) of Lansing; seven grandchildren; one brother, Allen (Lois) of Lansing; two sisters, Ruth (Rex) Royston of Vermontville and Laura Horde of Spring Hill, Fla.; and one sister, Sue (Joe) Martinez.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Clark and Norma Martinez.

Services were Sept. 23 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Paul Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice or Potterville Methodist Church Building Fund.
