Edith J. Malipsey
Edith J. Malipsey, 68, of Vermontville, died Oct. 5, 1997.
Mrs. Malipsey was born April 16, 1929, in Louisiana, to William and Ruth (Brown) Lakoda. She was a kind and compassionate lady who worked as a nurse’s aide in home health care for many years. She was a member of the Nashville VFW Auxiliary and a 40-year member of Hastings Loyal Order of Moose.
She is survived by her husband, Leonard; son, Chester (Carol) Gasik of California; one granddaughter; brothers, Jesse Lakoda of Texas and Gerald Lakoda of Illinois.
She was predeceased by son Leonard in 1977.
Funeral services were Oct. 8 at Pray Funeral Home, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Alice L. Mann
Alice Lura Mann, 79, of Vermontville died May 7, 1997, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Mann was born April 3, 1918, in Leslie, the daughter of John and Dora (Smith) Haines.
She is survived by her husband, Denzel; two sons, James (Bette) Hemstreet of Brutus and John (Mary) Hemstreet of Dansville; two step-sons, Leslie (Grace) Mann of Lansing and Harry (Carol) Kelley of Charlotte; two step-daughters, Sharlene (Terry) Thuma of Potterville and Joyce Pierpointe of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Services were May 10 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Windle Davis officiating. Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Leslie.
W. Harvey Mapes, Jr.
W. Harvey Mapes, Jr., 83, died July 11, 1997.
A native of Glen Ridge, N.J., he lived in Tequesta 25 years, served on the Village Council for over six years, and served as Mayor from 1980-1983. Retiring from Munster, Ind. as Sr. Vice President of Packaging Corporation of America, a Division of Tenneco. He attended Lehigh University, as a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and Mercersburg Academy, Mechanicsville, Pa. He was awarded the Army’s Silver Star in Attu during WWII and has actively volunteered in the Emergency Room at Jupiter Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Woolford Mapes of Tequesta; daughter, Mary Bishop of Nevada; two sons, Reed Mapes of Florida and Stephen Mapes of Lansing; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Alice M. Marshall
Alice M. (Lahr) Marshall, 83, of Charlotte died Feb. 15, 1997, at Pennock Hospital, Hastings, following a long illness.
Mrs. Marshall was born in Nashville, the daughter of Fred and Sadie (McGinnes) Fuller and had been a lifelong resident of the Charlotte and Nashville areas. She had been employed at the former Richey’s Store and Wilcox-Gay in Charlotte, and most recently at Bosworth Veterinary Hospital. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two sons, David (Barbara) Lahr and Michael (Arletta) Lahr, both of Charlotte; two stepdaughters, Janet (Charles) McMillen of Versailles, Ken., and Delores (Jim) Knoll of Nashville; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilma (Doug) DeCamp and Mary (Lawrence) Jarrard both of Nashville.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Allen Lahr in 1966; second husband, Vern Marshall in 1986; and one stepdaughter, Nancy Johncock in 1992.
Services were Feb. 19 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming and Elder Richard Garn officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery.

Bernadene R. Marshall
Bernadene Roberta Marshall, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Flint, died Feb. 8, 1997, in a Lansing hospital.
Mrs. Marshall was born Aug. 15, 1909, in Charlotte, the daughter of Glen and Ida (Baisel) Saums. She had been a resident of Flint since 1931 and had recently returned to Charlotte in 1991 to be near her family. She graduated from Charlotte High School and attended Eaton County Normal School and Western Michigan University, earning a bachelor’s degree at Eastern Michigan University.
She taught school for 38 ˝ years in Eaton County, Mt. Morris, and the Dye schools in Genesee County, then retired from Longfellow Junior High in the Flint Public School system in 1969. She then volunteered as a tutor in the Laubach Adult Literacy Program. She had been a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Flint since 1946 and its Chancel Choir for 20 years, member of United Methodist Women and Priscilla Circle, served on the Social Concern Commission, acting as chairman for three years, and a Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of the Administration Board of the Greater Flint Council of Church, Church Women United, an associate member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte, and a member of the Flint Community Chorus, participating in several operas. She was also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, and Flint Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by two brothers, Max (Marcella) Saums of Roseville, Minn., and Howard (Wilma) Saums of Charlotte; one sister, June (Ed) Fremody of Charlotte; three nieces, Lois (Jess) Smith, and Lori (David) Brown all of Charlotte, and Joan (David) Brown of Leland; and one nephew, Ronald (Marilyn) Saums of Columbia, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1978.
Services were Feb. 11 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Catherine Mason
Catherine Mason, 88, of Mason, formerly of Charlotte, died Nov. 23, 1997.
Mrs. Mason was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Crestline, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Cara (McMahon) Trick. She married Harlon Mason May 20, 1966, and was a former owner of an adult foster care home in the Charlotte area for several years. She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church, Mason.
She is survived by two daughters, Shirley England of Holt and Connie Sharp of Grand Ledge; one stepson, Harlon (Janet) Jr. of Marshall; one stepdaughter, Norma Davis of Battle Creek; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harlon.
Services were Nov. 25 at the St. James Catholic Church, Mason, with the Rev. Fr. Kenneth McDonald officiating. Interment was in the Gresham Cemetery, Chester Township. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Esther E. Masters
Esther E. Masters, 83, of Olivet died Dec. 12, 1997, at the Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.
Mrs. Masters was born in Benton Harbor, the daughter of Jakob and Myrtle Schweikert. She had been an Olivet resident for about 47 years. She was a 1930 graduate of Benton Harbor High School and a 1934 graduate of Olivet College. She retired as director of the Emily Andrus Home and was also director of Northside Manor, both in Battle Creek. She also managed the former Marks Store in Charlotte and former Burkhead Furniture Store in Olivet. She was grand marshall of the 1996 Olivet College Homecoming Parade and received the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994. She was an Olivet City Council member and took part in many clubs and organizations.
She is survived by her three sons, Preston (Glenda) Masters of Alexander City, Ala., Geoffrey Masters of Tucson, Ariz., and H. David (Ilene) Masters of Battle Creek; one daughter, Barbara (James) Brummel of Grand Haven; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two granddaughters.
Services were Dec. 15 at the Klock Commons in Dole Hall on the Olivet College Campus, Olivet, with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating. Interment was in the Olivet Cemetery, Olivet. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Francis J. Masters
Francis J. “Bud” Masters, 70, of Olivet died Dec. 10, 1997, at his residence.
Mr. Masters was born in Marshall the son of Roland and Edna (Stults) Masters. He was an Olivet area resident most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and has been employed by the Kellogg Co. in Battle Creek from where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a life member of the Nashville V.F.W., and a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge #676 and Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by one daughter, Suzanne (Darrel) Shrontz of Elgin, Ill.; two grandsons; and four sisters, Janice L. Place of Bellevue, Marjorie Cushman of Marshall, Valdean Willoughby of Olivet, and Bernadine Cole of San Antonio, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Estella (Magoon); son, Mark; one daughter, Pamela; one sister, Madeline Havens; and two brothers, Melvin and Keith Masters.
Services were Dec. 13 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Clark A. Hock officiating. Interment was in Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
