Mary Peters
Mary Peters, 79, of Eaton Rapids died Feb. 28, 1997, in Charlotte.
Mrs. Peters was born Aug. 20, 1917, in Mecosta County, the daughter of James and Leah (Campbell) Buchner.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosemary (Dan) Norton of Eaton Rapids; one son, Tom Peters of Olivet; one daughter-in-law, Janice Peters of Eaton Rapids; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Earlene) Buchner and Lloyd (Isabell) Buchner all of Lansing; three sisters, Wilma (Lewis) Evans of Bellevue, Idabel (Leon) Smith of Lansing, and Leta (Joe) Fillingham of Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer Peters in 1990 and two sons, Doug Peters in 1996, and LeRoy Peters in 1943.
It was her wishes that there be no visitation and no funeral service. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tri-County Office on Aging Meals on Wheels program.
Trina S. Walker Peters
Trina Sue Walker Peters, 29, of Charlotte died May 3, 1997, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Ms. Peters was born June 25, 1967, in Lansing, the daughter of Larry and Roxanne (Pruden) Walker.
She is survived by her parents; one brother, Chad (Carol) Walker; two nephews, Benjamin and Christopher; her grandparents, Jack and Oral Pruden and Leona Walker all of Charlotte.
Services were May 6 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice.
Dorothy M. Pier
Dorothy M. “Dottie” Pier, 78, of Abilene, Texas, formerly of Charlotte died May 13, 1997, in Abilene, Texas.
Mrs. Pier was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Marshall, the daughter of Earl and Blanche Stevens. She graduated from school in Charlotte and attended business college in Chicago, Ill. She married Walter Pier in Abilene, Kan., on May 15, 1943. They had lived in Abilene since 1963. She was a homemaker and attended Zion Lutheran church.
She is survived by her husband, Walter; three sons, William of Loveland, Ohio, Daniel of Arlington, Texas, and Edward of Buda, Texas; four grandchildren, Kimberely, Steven, Nicholas, and Christopher Pier.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Lester Stevens.
Services were May 16 at the Zion Lutheran Church, Abilene, Texas, with Dr. Timothy Rosenthal officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. Entombment will be at Elmwood Mausoleum, Abilene, Texas.

Hazel J. Pifer
Hazel J. Pifer, 95, of Charlotte died Oct. 8, 1997.
Mrs. Pifer was born Sept. 1, 1902, in Eaton County, the daughter of George W. and Myrta Mae (Harmon) Hicks. She was a rural elementary school teacher and music teacher.
She is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis J. Webb and Janice J. Griffin both of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; son, Wayne; and 2 grandchildren.
Services were Oct. 11 at Chester Gospel Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home.
Deloris C. Pinch
Deloris C. Pinch, 67, of Charlotte died June 15, 1997, at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte, after a short illness.
Mrs. Pinch was born in Boyne City, the daughter of Oral and Catherine (Kasbohm) Barber, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1948. She was employed in the food service department of Charlotte Public School, retiring in 1995 after 25 years of service.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Seager and Janis (Jake) VanGelder; one son, James (Lori) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren; one sister, Henrietta (Mitchell) Hansel of Lansing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard, and one grandson, Chance.
Services were June 17 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with the Rev. Thomas Ball officiating. Interment was in the West Windsor Cemetery.

Gertrude E. Powers
Gertrude E. Powers, 84, of Charlotte died Aug. 24, 1997, at the Michigan Capitol Medical Center, Greenlawn Campus after a short illness.
Mrs. Powers was born in Ahmeek, Keweenaw County, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the second daughter of John and Edith (Hocking) Hutchens. She had been a Charlotte resident since 1936. She had moved with her family in 1919 to Lansing, where she was later employed by Capitol National Bank and Oldsmobile Division of General Motors. She was a member of the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ and its Blanche Moyer circle and the Charlotte Sunshine Club, and had been an active volunteer in many community activities. She had also been active in Republican Party Politics where she had served as Campaign Chairperson for Elly Peterson when she was a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1964.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William; one daughter, Linda (David) Smith of Duck Lake; two sons, John (Peg) Powers of Springfield, Ill., and David (Chrissy) Powers of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roy (Hope) Hutchens, Robert (Helen) Hutchens and Paul (Carol) Hutchens, all of Lansing; and two sisters, Mildred Harrington of Long Lake and Betty (Pat) Wade of Ludington; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Milner, and two brothers, John Hutchens and Charles Hutchens.
Services were Aug. 27 at the First Congregational Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. Z. William Colson officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Charlotte Public Library.
Mable Powers
Mable (Mater) Powers, 87, of Charlotte died June 25, 1997, at the Battle Creek Health System, Community Site, after a short illness.
Mrs. Powers was born in Nashville, the daughter of Elmer and Effie (Spitler) Mater. She had been a Charlotte resident since 1958. She was a 1927 graduate of Nashville High School. She was a registered nurse, graduating in 1930 from the Bronson School of Nursing, Kalamazoo. She worked for the American Red Cross in Ann Arbor during the 1930s while her husband attended the University of Michigan Law School. she was a former member of the Nashville School board, Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, where she served as president of its United Methodist Women, a member of the Charlotte Country Club, Altruistic Club, Charlotte Women’s Club, and the Charlotte Friends of the Library.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha (Kenneth) Schimmelpfenneg of Battle Creek; one son, Joseph (Linda) of Ohio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Gertrude of S.C. and Florence of Marcellus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace; one brother, John; and one sister, Dorothy.
Services were June 28 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, with the Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Lakeview Cemetery, Nashville. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

M. Douglas Rockwood
M. Douglas Rockwood, 75, lifelong resident of Eaton Rapids, died Aug. 25, 1997, as a Lansing hospital.
Mr. Rockwood was born June 14, 1922, in Hamlin Township, Eaton County, the son of Clare and Flossie (Colestock) Rockwood. Doug was an Army Veteran of World War II and was a retired employee of General Motors in Lansing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids. Mr. Rockwood was an active member of the F&AM Lodge #63 and the O.E.S. Lodge #241 both of Eaton Rapids. A 50-year member of the American Legion Post #15, Eaton Rapids. He served in all offices of the Post. He was also a member of many other clubs, where he held other positions. Mr. Rockwood was instrumental in forming and implementing the Legion and V.F.W. Ritual Teams.
He is survived by his three children, Steven (Christine D.) Rockwood of Harper Woods, Christine A. (Timothy) Maher of Eaton Rapids, and Lori S. Rockwood of Holt; special friend, Bob Cross of Holt; 3 grandsons, stepmother, Letha (Merle) Knickerbocker of Eaton Rapids; aunt, Lucille Colestock of Eaton Rapids; and several cousins.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Vinita; and grandson, Matthew Maher.
Services were Aug. 28 at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Thomas Evans officiating. A military graveside service was provided by both the American Legion and the V.F.W. Posts at the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital, the First United Methodist Church, or the American Lung Association of Michigan.
