Elaine W. Sage
Elaine W. Sage, 81, of Eaton Rapids died May 30, 1997, at her residence.
Mrs. Sage was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Lansing, the daughter of Stewart and Rhea (Klatt) Byle. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids, the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge #241 Eaton Rapids, Duck Lake Country Club, Lansing Elks, a volunteer for the Eaton Community Hospice and an active member of the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens where she was on the advisory council board, craft committee and a member of the “Sit and Be Fit” group.
She is survived by two sons, Brad (Mary) Sage of Tamarac, Fla., and Jeff (Jacque) Sage of Charlotte; one daughter, Rhea (Mike) Barningham of Castle Rock, Colo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan “Sam” Sage in 1988.
Services were June 2 at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Tom Evans officiating. Interment was in the Deepdale Memorial Park, Lansing.

Gerald A. Salisbury
Rev. Gerald A. “Jerry” Salisbury, 84, of Eaton Rapids died March 15, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.
Rev. Salisbury was born Jan. 9, 1913, in Lebanon Township, Clinton County, the son of Willis and Effie May (Falor) Salisbury. He was a graduate of Albion College Class of 1940 and attended Garrett Theological Seminary. He was a pastoral member of the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church serving in Marengo, Rick Creek, Lyon Lake, Newaygo/Oak Grove, the Springport Larger Parish including Lee Center, Pope, Charlesworth and Griffith. He also served Center Eaton/Gresham, Brookfield, Bath/Chapel Hill, Grovenburg/Robbins, Mulliken, and Vermontville/Gresham.
He retired as an active pastor in 1978. Rev. Salisbury was a charter member and treasurer/manager of the Wesley Credit Union. He received the United Methodist Church Conference Torch Award for 65 years of service to Scouting and Youth. He was a member of the Rotary Club for 35 years and a founding member of the Springport Lions Club. He was a member and officer of the Eaton Rapids Conservation Club for many years and served as director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. He was a life member of the Eaton Rapids Masonic Lodge #63 F&AM.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine; one daughter, Mary Ann (Bob) Osborn of Eaton Rapids; four sons, Stephen (Joan) of Muskegon, Michael (Rebecca) of Eaton Rapids, David (Debra) of Eaton Rapids; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Howard (Ellen) of Bannister, and Lloyd (Louise) of St. Johns; one sister, Bonna (Richard) Davidson of Dryden; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Gordon; five sisters, Wilma Wright, Joan Devereaux, Donna White, Martha Salisbury and June Salisbury; grandson, Lucas Osborn; and granddaughter, Emily Salisbury.
Masonic memorial services were March 17 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Funeral services were March 18 at the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, with Pastors Tom Evans and Dr. David Evans officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church Conference Camp Endowment Fund.
Viola F. Sampsel
Viola F. Sampsel, 74, of Charlotte died Feb. 19, 1997.
Mrs. Sampsel was born March 31, 1922, in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Arthur and Kathleen (Paine) Hall. She had been an inspector for Nash-Kelvinator. She was a member of the South Kalamo Church and former member of the Charlotte Assembly of God.
She is survived by two daughters, Patsy (Larry) Hynes of Vermontville and Suzanne (Larry) Thompson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Dennis (Susan) Lea of Traverse City and Max (Nancy) Sampsel of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith (LaVern) Enquist of Lake; one sister-in-law, Sophie Hall of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd in 1983; one brother, Wayne Hall in 1996; and her great-grandson, Corey Hynes.
Services were Feb. 22 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Interment was in the Kalamo Township Cemetery.
Janet Sanders
Janet Sanders, 58, of Eaton Rapids, died Dec. 21, 1996.
Janet was born Sept. 6, 1938, in Charlotte. She was a member of the South Cochran Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Sanders; son, James M. Sanders of Eaton Rapids; and sister, Joyce (Robert) Alling of Charlotte. She is also survived by her adopted family, Martin, Lee and Laura Owen, Rob, Tonya, and Bobby Insko; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her two children, Jack and Jodie Sanders; her parents, Jack and Helen; and a brother, Thomas R. Beals.
Services were Dec. 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment will be in Springport Cemetery in Springport, Michigan.

Marjorie Sanderson
Marjorie Sanderson, 77, of Charlotte, died Aug. 17, 1997.
Ms. Sanderson was born Nov. 19, 1919, in St. Charles and had worked for Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte as a licensed practical nurse for 24 years until retiring in 1981.
She is survived by one sister, Dorothy (Richard) Stegenga of Charlotte; one brother, Ralph (June) Sanderson of Cave City, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were Aug. 20 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with the Rev. Duane Royston officiating. Interment was in St. Charles Riverside Cemetery, St. Charles.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Church of the Nazarene or American Cancer Society. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Marcella F. Saums
Marcella Feller Saums, 75, of Roseville, Minn., died Aug. 5, 1997.
Mrs. Saums was born Aug. 9, 1919, the first child of Joseph and Martha Feller of Escanaba. She attended Franklin Grade School in Escanaba, Escanaba Junior High School, and graduated in 1937 from Escanaba High School. She received further education at Badger Business College in Green Bay, Wis., and was employed by the Farmer’s Home Administration, Escanaba, and Social Security Administration, in both Escanaba and Minneapolis, Minn. She married Max Saums in 1940 in Escanaba. She retired from the SSA in Minneapolis in December 1978.
She is survived by her husband, Max (formerly of Charlotte and Escanaba); one son, Ronald of Columbia, MO.; two granddaughters, Kerry McDonald of Columbia and Molly Sharp of Owatonna, Minn.; two great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Claire McDonald of Columbia; one brother, Donald Feller of Escanaba; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Aug. 9 at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 N. Hamline Ave., Roseville.
Memorial contributions may be donated to the American Red Cross for cancer research.
George A. Schad
George Anthony Schad, 88, of Eaton Rapids died Jan. 11, 1997, at his residence.
Mr. Schad was born April 18, 1908, in Mansfield, Ohio. He moved to Eaton Rapids from the Detroit area in the late 1920’s to work at Horner Woolen Mills. He met and married his wife, Corrine Palmer, in 1932, the same year Tony opened Tony’s Radio and Electric in Eaton Rapids. He had worked at the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, and retired from the Ingham Medical Hospital’s maintenance department at the age of 80. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids, a life member and Honorary Tyler of the F&AM Lodge #63, and a member of the DeWitt Clinton Consistory of Grand Rapids.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Corrine; two sons, Charles of Ionia, and Ronald (Pam) of Flint; one daughter, Wendy (Danny) Hector of Eaton Rapids; five grandchildren, Jamie Hector, Kim Hector, Tracie Hector, Stacey Bradley, Toni (Steve) Bolin, and Bruce Koch; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Zack Bradley; three sisters, Theresa, Betty, and Ann; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were Jan. 15 at the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. Masonic memorial services were Jan. 14 at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment was in the Roseville Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Ira W. Scott Jr.
Ira Warren “Scotty” Scott Jr., 70, of Eaton Rapids died Aug. 3, 1997, in Eaton Rapids.
Mr. Scott was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Battle Creek, the son of Ira and Myrtle (Huffman) Scott. He spent most of his life in and around Eaton Rapids and was a World War II veteran, having served as a paratrooper. He worked several different jobs, including those at Michigan State University and Trimble Oil Co., and was also self-employed as a bricklayer.
He is survived by one son, Tom (Linda) of Eaton Rapids; one daughter, Deborah Lord of Charlotte; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, James (Saundra) and Gerald (Sandra), both of Eaton Rapids, and Edward (Gretchum) of Fountain; four sisters, Marilyn (Leo) Kinyon, Phyllis (Hap) Love, Beverly (David) Miller, all of Eaton Rapids, and Ruth Ann Wilbur of Fountain; one sister-in-law, Linda Scott of Eaton Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Madeline (Redfield); one daughter, Kim; his parents; one brother, Robert; and one nephew, Randy Kinyon.
Services were Aug. 7 at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with the Rev. Sharon Wozencraft officiating.
