Diane Kay Vance
Diane Kay Vance, 47, of Bellevue died Oct. 7, as a result of an automobile accident.
She was born March 1, 1950, in Lansing, the daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Umbler) Humbarger. She was a corrections officer in Coldwater for Camp Branch Women’s Facility. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Charlotte and a member of the Moose Lodge 676 in Marshall.
She is survived by four daughters, Crystal (Thomas) Rice of Eaton Rapids, Tammie (John) McKinney of Mulliken, Heather (Brian) Moore of Charlotte, Tricia (Kevin) Mahan of Vermontville, and her son, Sherwood (Karie) Jones of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren; former husband, Sherwood Jones of Weidman; three brothers, David Humbarger of Oklahoma, Larry Humbarger and Don Humbarger, both of Ohio; and sister, Batty Geisler of North Carolina.
Funeral services were Oct. 11 at Pray Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating.
Marian H. (Johnson) VanDerBos
Marian H. (Johnson) VanDerBos, 79, of St. James City, Fla., formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Oct. 30, 1996, in Florida.
Mrs. VanDerBos was born Oct. 29, 1917, in Gladwin, the daughter of Carl and Rose (Boyer) Lange. She had been employed with Hart’s Gamble Store, VFW National Home, and Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Fred; four daughters, Randi (Donald) Colestock of Eaton Rapids, Cheryl (Kent) Moss of Springport, Penny Carris of Eaton Rapids, and Susan (Tom) Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev.; one son, Thomas Johnson of Eaton Rapids; two stepsons, Ross VanDerBos of Carson City and Brian (Evie) VanDerBos of Lansing; 13 grandchildren, Becky Wood, Jeff, Tim and Misti Horton, Ron and Steve Moss, Cathy Wood, Heather and Alex Carris and Bob, Jessica, Jarod, and Adam Wilson; five great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Gregg, and Matt Wood, and Mychel and Alysa Horton; three sisters, Janet Strohkirch, Doris (Donald) Shell, all of Gladwin, and Pat (Ronald) Umphrey of Clare; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Johnson in 1968; two sons, Bob Johnson in 1978 and Jim Johnson in 1987; and one sister, Dorothy Burdick in 1995.
Graveside services are Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. at the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Sara “Sally” Vander Ploeg
Sara “Sally” Vander Ploeg, 62, of Jenison, formerly of Charlotte, died Dec. 11, 1997, as the result of an automobile accident.
She is survived by two daughters, Laura (Darin) Wilbur of Saranac and May Vander Ploeg of Lincoln, Neb.; two sons, David (Lori) of Mancelona and John (Judy) of Highland; four grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Karyn, Randy, and Alexandra; three sisters, Jane Tharpe of Charlotte, Helen (Jack) Snedeker of Dixboro, and Sue (Gale) Trimble of Alma.
Services were Dec. 15 at the Cook Memorial Chapel with Pastor Nat Carter officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Moyer Brown Scholarship or Morning Star in Jenison.
Stephen Vanderpoorten
Stephen Vanderpoorten, 88, of Dearborn died June 21, 1997, at Heartland Healthcare, Dearborn Heights, after an extended illness.
Mr. Vanderpoorten was born in Martin, Ill., the son of Stephen and Florence (Meinhard) Vanderpoorten. He was a retired fire protection engineer.
He is survived by his wife, Janet (Landon) Vanderpoorten (formerly of the Olivet/Springport area).
Private services were held. Interment was in the Springport Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Leader Dog School, Rochester, MI.
Allyn F. Van Dyke
Allyn F. Van Dyke, 75, of Almont died March 10, 1997, at his home.
Mr. Van Dyke was born Oct. 22, 1921, in Eaton County, the son of Azell and Agnes (Badger) Van Dyke. He was a graduate of Michigan State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1943, and master’s degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University in 1949. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the Army with H.Co 309th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, 78th Division. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. He was a life member of VFW Post #2492, having been Post Commander for two years. He served on the Almont Township Zoning Board and Board of Appeals for a total of 39 years. He was president of the Lapeer Co. Intern School District Board of Education for 29 years and a board member for 30 years. He was a 4-H club Council member for many years. After retiring from farming, he volunteered as an assistant with the Almont High School track and cross-country teams. He attended the First Congregational Church, Almont. He married Ada Hough, March 8, 1947.
He is survived by his wife, Ada; five children, David (Elizabeth) of Viroqua, Wis., Linda (Donald) Eppelheimer of LaCrescent, Minn., Julene Van Dyke of Lapeer, Sylvia (Louis Horvath) Van Dyke of Princeton, N.J., Steven (Kimberly) of Almont and foster son, Andrew (Felicia) Davis of Fremont, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were March 12 at the First Congregational Church, Almont, with the Rev. Larry Rieck officiating. Interment was in the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek. Arrangements were made by the Muir Brothers Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the McLaren Hospice Service, Lapeer, or the First Congregational Church in Almont.
Jacob Van Vessem
Jacob Van Vessem, 92, died July 2, 1997.
Mr. Van Vessem taught at Charlotte High School, served in WWII with the United States Army Air Corp, worked with the Post-War Veterans Administration, and many years as a Social Services director at the former Sunshine Hospital.
He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Van Tuinen of Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Vivian.
A gathering to honor the memories of Jack and Vivian was held at the Ten Have-Tuck cottages on Clear Bottom Lake on July 6. Cremation has already taken place. Arrangements were done by the Memorial Alternatives.
Wilma R. Vedder
Wilma R. Vedder, 91, of Olivet died June 9, 1997, at the Tendercare Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Vedder was born in Avon, Ohio, the daughter of William and Oma (Cornell) Barrett. She has been an Olivet resident since 1943 coming from Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Vedder has been employed by Olivet College in the cafeteria, from which she retired in 1973 after 25 years of service. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church and it’s Amy Storr/Emma Jo Circle.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis and Lois; two sons, Thomas and Richard; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman, and three brothers, Richard, Carl, and Barrett.
Graveside services were June 12 at the Olivet Cemetery with the Rev. Clark Hock officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Olivet Congregational Church.
Dr. Kenneth G. Volz, Jr.
Dr. Kenneth G. Volz, Jr., 54, of Okemos died Dec. 22, 1997.
Mr. Volz was born Oct. 15, 1943, in Ann Arbor. He was a resident of Okemos for 25 years and was in practice there since 1972. He graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn L.; children, Shannon Lee (Bob) Bohl of San Diego, Calif., Nikki Lyn Volz of Okemos, Lacy Jo (Christopher) Lowry of Story City, Iowa, and Ryan C. Volz of Okemos; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth G. Volz, Sr. of Saline; sister, Beth Ann Spatz of Cincinnati, Ohio; and one niece and nephew.
Services were Dec. 24 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel, East Lansing.
