Evelyn Poppe

Evelyn (Tank) Poppe, 85, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo.

Mrs. Poppe was born in Bono, Ohio, the daughter of Edward and Lena Mae (Jeremy) Tank, and had been a Kalamazoo resident since 1979, moving there from Charlotte. She was a retired telephone sales supervisor for Sears, Roebuck & Co. in Charlotte, was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, was a perpetual member of The Sisters of St. Joseph Guild in Nazareth, and was a former member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Alter Society in Charlotte.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Ruth Tank of Charlotte; brother-in-law, Eric Lefkes of Kalamazoo; and numerous nieces and nephews including, Terralene (Richard) Deer of Charlotte and Patrick (Suzanne) Tank of Little Rock, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter in 1965; four sisters, Henrietta O’Boyle, Gladys Tank, Marjorie Simon and Mae Lefkes; and two brothers, Wayne Tank and Herman Tank.

Funeral Mass was Feb. 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Internment was in the Deepdale Memorial Park, Lansing.

Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Rachael A. Porter

Rachael Ann Garlow (Poe) Porter, 52, of Charlotte, died Aug. 23, 2000.

Mrs. Porter was born June 22, 1948 in Fairmont, W.Va., the daughter of John Richard Garlow and Catherine Behnke. She had been secretary to the principal at the Charlotte Junior High School for 16 years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; two daughters, Julie Poe of Charlotte and Michelle Poe of Springport; one son, Michael Poe, and his fiancée Hope of Northville; her father, John Richard (Marilyn) Garlow of Charlotte; her mother, Catherine Behnke of Salineville, Ohio; one sister, Mary Beth Hartline of N. Richland Hills, Texas; four brothers, David Garlow of Charlotte, Timothy Garlow of Lexington, N.C., Joseph Garlow of Gladstone and John Garlow II of Lewisville, Texas; her grandmother, Dorothy Moran Garlow of St. Albans, W.Va.; and, many nieces and nephews.

Services were Aug. 26 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Peter Brenner officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to a scholarship fund in memory of Rachael.

Milton J. Potter

Milton J. Potter, 74, of Charlotte died Sept. 17, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Potter was born in Kalamo Township, Eaton County the son of Carl and Edith (Exander) Potter and was a long-time Charlotte-area resident, who had also lived in the Hastings area for many years. He was a World War II Navy veteran and past Commander and member of Maple City Post #2406 VFW, the Greenwalt-Flaherty Post #42 American Legion and Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3552. He was a retired auto painter, having worked for Kalamazoo Body and Barnum & Tenny in Lansing, from which he retired.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna (Snyder); three daughters, Marcia (Larry) Hicks of Lansing, Shirley (Duane) Hall of Eaton Rapids and Pam (Ted) Bushler of Grand Ledge; two stepdaughters, Marsha (Ted) Whipple of Charlotte and Lori (Rick) Olson of Olivet; one stepson, Tom Howe of Dunedin, Fla.; three step-grandchildren; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret (Alex) Verhelle of Farwell and Mildred Verhaelle of Eaton Rapids; three brothers, Max (Joyce) of Vermontville, Robert of Indiana and Raymond (Elsie) of Charlotte; one sister-in-law, Rose Potter of Charlotte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Merlin and Royce.

Services were Sept. 19 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Darryl Johnson and VFW Post #2406 officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital or the Needmore Bible Church.

Clayton Prater

Clayton Prater, 60, of Olivet died Feb. 15, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Prater was born Nov. 13, 1939 in Springport, the son of Clyde and Clora (Risner) Prater. He married Mary Grove July 13, 1968 in Lee Township. He was a member of the Faith Assembly of God. He graduated from Olivet High School, then went into the Navy for four years. He was employed by Eaton Manufacturing for 25 years. He loved to bowl and was active in national bowling tournaments. He loved collecting old cars, and used to drive his golf cart to church with his grandchildren. He was a very loving person who loved his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary of Olivet; one son, Matt (Tina) Prater of Springport; four grandchildren, Spencer Prater, Kaitlyn Prater, Cody Roiter and Zack Roiter; five sisters, Thelma (Chuck) Burkwalt, Jerlene Prater, Lois (Brian) Dehnert, Emma Damron (Steve West), Janice (Steve) Jackson; one brother, Bob; his father, Clyde of Olivet; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1999; one daughter, Karen Prater-McLeod, wife of Pete McLeod of Charlotte; one son, Patrick Lynn Prater in 1970; one step-daughter, Judy Lynn Bunker in 1970; and one sister, Manda Prater.

Services were Feb. 18 at the Albion Chapel of Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Winford Collins and the Rev. Todd McLane officiating. Interment was in the Hunt Cemetery, Clarence Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Mabel M. Preston

Mabel May Preston, 87, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000.

Mrs. Preston was born Feb. 21, 1913 in Charlotte, the daughter of Albert Mason and Ella May (Martin) Etson.

Surviving are a son, Dean (Bonnie) Preston of Eaton Rapids; son-in-law, Larry (Sharon) Johnson of Olivet; grandchildren, Scott, Steve, Brian, Sherri, Dana and Darren; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Preston in 1975; and a daughter, Linda Johnson in 1973.

Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Medical Care Facility.

John Priesman

John Calvin Priesman, 76, of Charlotte died March 30, 2000.

Mr. Priesman was born Jan. 10, 1924 in Mulliken, the son of Frederick and Lillian (Wagoner) Priesman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of VFW Post #2406, Charlotte. He had worked as a reinforced iron worker “rod buster.”

He is survived by one daughter, Brenda (Douglas) Hoeve of Dorr; one son, John Jr. of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Shannen Sabino of Florida and Ty Tinkey of Montana; two sisters, Betty Smith of Harrison and Patricia (Sam) Spagnuolo of Charlotte; four brothers, Neal and Warren “Fritz”, both of Lansing, Ward “Ed” (Kate) of Kalamo and Richard (Jean) of Charlotte; one half-brother, Larry (Joyce) of Georgia; and his friend of 38 years, Nancy Wotkyns of Eaton Rapids.

Graveside services are Tuesday, April 4 at the Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, with services by VFW Post #2406. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans of the VFW Home, Eaton Rapids.

James W. Putney

James W. Putney, 87, of Dimondale died Sept. 3, 2000 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte following a short illness.

Mr. Putney was born March 2, 1913 in Oneida Township, the son of Robert and Nettie (Humphrey) Putney. He had worked at the Grand Ledge Face Brick Factory, Portland Manufacturing, in plant protection; Atlas Drop Forge, Willow Run Bomber Plant; and in Pennsylvania during World War II. He retired from Fisher Body in 1972 after 26 years of service. He was a farmer all his life and a member of UAW Local #602.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jessie Belle; one daughter, Juaneta Hunt of Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Raymond (Carolyn) of Charlotte; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Julia (Ernest) Shaw and Idea Kwant, both of Grand Ledge, and Zella Challender of California; two brothers, Richard (Ethelyn) of Lyons and Morris (Patricia) of Grand Ledge; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were Sept 7 at the Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Pastor Charles Moore officiating. Interment was in the Dimondale Cemetery.

Margaret E. Randall

Margaret E. (Nelson) Randall, 78, of Olivet formerly of Nokomis, Fla., died Dec. 3, 2000 at her residence.

Mrs. Randall was born in Olivet, the daughter of James Ira and Mina (Boyd) Nelson. Since, 1974, she had spent summers in Olivet and winters in Nokomis. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church and its Women’s Fellowship. She married John Wesley Randall Oct. 29, 1945.

She is survived by two sons, Stephen (Libby) of Morgantown, W.Va., and John (Charlotte) of East Harwich, Mass.; four grandchildren; and one brother, Ernest “Mike” Nelson of Olivet.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Jan. 14, 1988; two brothers, James and Rolland Nelson; and three sisters, Iris Nelson, Vivian Nelson, and Edyth Crannell.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Interment of cremains will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Tekonsha.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oaklawn Hospice, Marshall.

Joyce E. Rauser

Joyce E. Rauser, 86, of Charlotte died Sept. 6, 2000.

Mrs. Rauser was born Feb. 18, 1914 in Assyria, the daughter of Roy and Mabel (Cox) Moore. She was a lifelong member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church where she was an active member of the St. Ann’s Guild. She was a member of the Charlotte Country Club and president of the Women’s Association. She was also one of eight founding members of two long-standing bridge clubs in Charlotte. She was a member of Rotary Ann’s. She wrote the “Tales About Town” column in the Charlotte Republican-Tribune for many years and helped Doc DeFoe write the “Up and Down Mainstreet” column. She assisted her husband, Wells, producing and distributing articles to newspapers throughout the state.

She is survived by one daughter, Wendy (Michael) McGowan of Tacoma, Wash; one son, Christopher (Christine) of Highland Park, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kelly, Megan, Peter and Mark; one sister, Virginia Gibbon of Brighton; and one brother, Wendell (Lu) Moore of San Diego, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wells, June 27, 1997.

Services were Sept 11 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenburg officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital or St. John’s Episcopal Church, both of Charlotte.

James Reed

James A. Reed, 70, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at Ingham Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Reed was born Oct. 31, 1929 in Augusta, the son of Harold and Helen (Silcock) Reed. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and then in the U.S. Marine Corps for two enlistments and had worked as a doughnut maker.

Surviving are his daughter, Jamie Baines; granddaughter, Danielle of Battle Creek; step-son, Dale Niles of Ohio; step-daughters, Cindy (David) Palmiter of Charlotte and Debbie Niles of Battle Creek; three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; brother, Barney (Carolyne) Reed of Hickory Corners; sisters, Betty Towne of Richland, Mary Palmer of Battle Creek, Donna (Don) Grubius of Richland, Patsy (Edward) LeBlanc of Danvers, Mass., Ailene Holston of Kalamazoo and Elsie (Jim) Shannon Augusta.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty on Feb. 21, 1999.

Funeral services were held June 15 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, with Raymond Rossell officiating.
