Wayne A. Harris
Wayne A. Harris, 71, of Olivet, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000 of natural causes while deer hunting on his farm.
Mr. Harris was born July 31, 1929 in Walton Twp., the son of Hugh and Margaret (Liggett) Harris, and was a life-long Walton Twp. Resident. He was a 1947 graduate of Olivet High School, a retired employee of Fisher Body Division of General Motors in Lansing, with 23 ½ years of service, and a life-long farmer. He attended Nashville Baptist Church, was a member of the Wolverine State Coon Hunters Club and enjoyed hunting, golfing, working and the outdoors. He was married to Barbara Boysen on June 28, 1958; she preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1997.
Surviving are one daughter, Lori (Rev. Deano) Lamphere of Nashville; one son, Martin (Marie) Harris of Springport; five grandchildren, Joshua, Eric and Adam Lamphere, and Kayla and Devin Harris; his mother, Margaret Harris of Olivet; brother, Gaylord (Ardeth) Harris of Olivet; sisters, Dorma Hisler of Springport and Myrna (Miles) Shrontz of Coral Springs, Fla.; dear friend, Shirley Weaver of Olivet; and 22 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in Jan. 1967.
Funeral services were held Nov. 24 at Nashville Baptist Church with Rev. Lester DeGroot and Rev. Deano Lamphere officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Lute Hartenburg
Lute Hartenburg, age 86, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 in Lansing. Lute was born July 19, 1913 in Eaton Rapids Twp., the son of Burr Riley and Mable Lavine (Higelmire) Hartenburg and was raised by his step father, Rocky Canady from the age of 14. Mr. Hartenburg was an active member of the Robbins United Methodist Church, a prominent Eaton Rapids farmer and served as President of the Eaton County Farm Bureau. He was a Past President of the Eaton Rapids School Board. Lute loved farming, his grandchildren, fishing, gardening, and working in his yard. He was preceded in death by 2 sons, Burr & Jerry L.; sister, Erma Anderson; brother, Wayland “Wade” Hartenburg; 2 brothers-in-law, Bernard (Ellen) Bellows, Emory Anderson and his step brother, Vern Canady.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Maxine O. (Bellows); Hartenburg of Westlake, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Renee Hartenburg of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Julie (Doug) Tews, Gretchen (Keith) Pretty, Rachel (Jim) Myers, Kurt Hartenburg and their mother, Audrey Hartenburg; Heidi (John) McGarry, Derrick L. Hartenburg, Heather (Paul) DeRose, John (Melissa) Hartenburg, Ben (Andrea) Hartenburg, Peter Hartenburg; 13 great-grandchildren, Jenna Tews, Adam Pretty, Audra Pretty, Victoria Pretty, Kathryn Pretty, Thomas Myers, Maria Myers, Molly McGarry, Megan McGarry, Zach Hartenburg, Evan Hartenburg, Ross Hartenburg, Paige Hartenburg; 2 sisters-in-law, Leone Hartenburg of Eaton Rapids, Lola Anderson of St. Louis; step sister, Myrtle Canady of AZ; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 9, 2000 at the Robbins United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Marty DeBow officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Kurt Hartenburg, Derrick Hartenburg, John Hartenburg, Ben Hartenburg, and Peter Hartenburg. The family was served through the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Ferron Hartshorn
Ferron H. Hartshorn, 71, of Bellevue died May 30, 2000, at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo.
Mr. Hartshorn was born Oct. 30, 1928 in Moscow, Ohio, the son of Harry and Maude (Manning) Hartshorn. He graduated from high school in Ohio and attended the Peniel Bible Institute in Kentucky, becoming a minister at the Vicksburg Assembly of God. He had been employed with Kellogg’s, retiring in 1988 from the processing department. He was a member of the Kellogg’s 25-year Club and a part-time minister. He served as a U.S. Army medic during the Korean War. He enjoyed playing gold, lawn work and being a father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Wilda; three daughters, Cindy (Hank) Emenhiser of Charlotte, Dawn (Larry) Baughman of Climax and Kim (Dan) Hoving of Traverse City; three sons, Chris (Tina) Davis of Battle Creek, James (Yvonne) Hartshorn of Miami, Fla., and the Rev. Mark (Debbie) Hartshorn of West Chester, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gail Greishop of Dayton, Ohio, Maxine Hartshorn of Xenia, Ohio, and Alice Cox of Heiskell, Tenn.; and two brothers, Paul of Lexington, Ken., and Edward of Lakeland, Fla.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and James, and one granddaughter, Kelcey Hoving in 1989.
Services were June 2 at the Bellevue Christian Center, Bellevue, with the Rev. Steve Covert and the Rev. Mark Hartshorn officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Shirley L. (Jones) Haskell
Shirley L. (Jones) Haskell, of Lansing, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, March 9, 2000 at the age of 60. Shirley was born May 29, 1939 in Lansing, the daughter of Oscar Bert and Eva Elizabeth Jones.
Surviving are 3 children, Ireta M. (Eric) Peterson of Mulliken, Thomas (Jeanie) Henderson of Eaton Rapids, Lura E. (Gregory) Jarosz of Lincoln Park; 10 grandchildren, Heather M., Amber R., Gustav R. and James Q. Peterson, Benjamin T., Jack L., and Naomi “Jacque” Henderson, Robert J., Melissa A. and Joshua A. Jarosz; father Oscar Bert Jones of Traverse City; 2 brothers, Rob (Kathy) Rouser of Eaton Rapids, Dale (Barbara) Jones of Kingsley; 2 sisters, Paulette (Ron) Crosby of Eaton Rapids, Ellen “Vickie” (George) Cole-Rouser of Potterville and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves behind many doctors, nurses, and co-workers at Ingham Regional Medical Center whom she loved dearly, and patients that she cherished. Shirley’s passion was riding in the wind with her friends in the Blue Angels Motor Cycle Club in Detroit. She’ll never be forgotten by her many friends and family from across the country.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at 4:00 p.m., at the Life Christian Church, 2560 Eaton Rapids Road, M-99, with Rev. David Stephens officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to the charity of one’s choice in memory of Shirley Haskell. Arrangements were made by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Vera Jean Hayter
Vera Jean Hayter, age 73 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, November 9, 2000 at the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. She was born January 15, 1927 in Saulte Ste. Marie, Michigan, the daughter of Delbert and Edith (Heath) VanLuven. Mrs. Hayter was a very active person, enjoying golf, playing cards and going out to dinner and shopping. She was formerly employed at Miller’s Ice Cream Parlour in Eaton Rapids, spent 18 years working for the Eaton Stamping Company in Eaton Rapids, worked several year with Care Free in Charlotte, 14 years as Cook for Rod’s Lounge in Eaton Rapids and was currently a carrier for the Lansing State Journal, Flashes, Eaton Community News and Detroit News. Preceding her in death were her husband, Leslie D. Hayter in 1980; 2 grandchildren; and 3 siblings.
Surviving are 4 children, Velma (Dan) Brouque of Grand Haven, Lila Deverney of Owosso, Bill (Dawn) Gleason of Eaton Rapids and Tom (Missy) Gleason of Onondaga; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers and sisters including Clyde (Dorothy) VanLuven of Mason; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, November 13th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink of the community Christian Church officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Heart & Hands in Eaton Rapids, envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Lawrence Hawkins
Lawrence Hawkins, 76, of Jackson died March 26, 2000 at Doctor’s Hospital, Jackson.
Mr. Hawkins was born Aug. 20, 1923, the son of the late Fay and Hattie (Bale) Hawkins. He graduated from Vermontville High School in 1941 and joined the U.S. Navy. He served on a submarine during World War II from July 1941 until August 1946. He was a former member of Teamsters Local #580 of Lansing, and Teamsters Local #414, Ft. Wayne, Ind. He was a life member of VFW Post #2406, Eagles Aerie #3552 and American Legion Post #42, all of Charlotte. He was also affiliated with the VFW National Home for Children in Eaton Rapids, and Camp Trotter (VFW camp for children), and the United States Submarine Vets of World War II. He had a great love of his country, family and friends.
He is survived by one daughter, Debbie, one son, David (Brenda); two granddaughters, Heather and Stacee; a special son, Don Stahl; one brother, Elwood; three sisters, Eleanor Rawson, Lucille Carroll and Anna Mae Schaub Antico; and, many nieces and nephews.
At his request, cremation has taken place.
Graveside memorial services were March 31 at the Veterans’ Cemetery, Battle Creek.

Norine M. Heisler
Norine M. (Sharp) Heisler, 90, of Olivet died Dec. 1, 2000 at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.
Mrs. Heisler was born Sept. 4, 1910 in Chester Twp., Eaton Co., the daughter of Carl and Phoebe (Ripley) Sharp and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. She married Andrew Heisler Nov. 29, 1928.
She is survived by three sons, Dwight (Helen), Dewey (Shirley), and Richard (Sheila), all of Olivet; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Dec. 11, 1985; and one granddaughter, Jean Ellen Heisler on May 31, 1963.
Services were Dec. 4 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor David Litchfield officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Arlene Helderman
Arlene Helderman, 76, of Hanover, passed away Tuesday, De. 5, 2000 at Albion Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Helderman was born Aug. 23, 1924 in East Jordan, the daughter of Marenus and Frances Hayward. She was a Girl Scout leader in the Munith area, and cared for many foster children through the years.
Surviving are children, Sam (Susan) Clough of Jackson, Judi (Bob) Davis St. of Springport, Sandi (Jerry) Andrews of Albion, Sherry (Bill) Parlow of Saratoga, Wyo., Beth (Michael Ewald) Helderman of Hanover; step-children, Charles (Sally) Helderman of New Jersey and Irma Lumsden of Missouri; brother, M.E. “Mike” Hayward Jr. and Anson Hayward, both of Florida, Arthur Hayward of Lansing and Kenn Hayward of Eaton Rapids; sisters, Eleanor Hawley of Peoria, Ill., Genevra “Genny” Wilson of Charlotte and Sharon Ryder of Florida; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Helderman in 1984; three sisters and one brother.
Funeral services were held Dec. 8 at Kurtz-Towns Funeral Homes, Hanover, with Pastor Tom Dillard officiating. Interment was at Hanover Cemetery.

Dorothy Hennessey
Dorothy Hennessey, 81, of Charlotte died April 27, 2000.
Mrs. Hennessey was born Aug. 21, 1918 in Bay City, the daughter of Stanley and Victoria Jones. She had been a home health care aide for many local Alzheimer’s patients. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Charlotte, an active member of its Altar Society and an Ecumenical Minister.
She is survived by two daughters, Torre Bolus of Lansing and Loraine (Gary) Shaver of Charlotte; two sons, Mike (special friend Nancy Bennett) and Jerry (Annette), both of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Anne Marie Bolus of Lansing, Jason, Benjamin and Matthew Shaver, Stephanie Hennessey, and David Kirby, all of Charlotte; and one great-grandson, James “Cal” Carlyle Leppien of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlyle “Cal” in 1972.
Funeral Mass was April 29 at ST. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Nenneau officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Gordon J. Henry
Gordon, J. Henry, 55, of Olivet, died Nov. 5, 2000 at his residence.
Mr. Henry was born Sept. 17, 1945 in Lansing, the son of Harold and Wilma (Struble) Henry and had been an Olivet resident for 50 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Olivet High School and attended Ainger Bible Church. He loved golf and was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a longtime secretary and played in the Tuesday night men’s golf league at Olivet Country Club and was the organizer of the Weekend Wing Ding Golf Tournament that had been held for many years. He loved the Olivet Eagles, the Michigan State Spartans and the Detroit Professional teams. He was a 35-year employee of Owens-Brockway in Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda (Long) Henry; sons, John T. Henry and James M. (Deborah) Henry; daughter, Laura Henry; grandson, Caleb James Henry; his mother, Wilma (Henry) Garity; brothers, Ron (Nancy) Henry and Tink (Shirley) Henry; sister, Elizabeth (Bob) Yago; and several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Henry on Feb. 27, 1965.
Services were Nov. 7 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel, Charlotte, with Pastor Scott Brood of the Ainger Bible Church officiating. Interment was in the Olivet Cemetery.

Joseph Henry
Joseph Lee Henry, 42, of Potterville died Jan. 22, 2000.
Mr. Henry was an employee of Fleet Image, attended Life Christian Church and was a loving and caring father.
He is survived by one daughter, Katy Henry of Potterville; one son, Jarrod of Potterville; his parents, William and Catherine (Hunt) Henry of Potterville; one sister, Jennie (Mark) Mishler of Charlotte; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Michael, and three nephews, David and Craig Henry and Travis Mishler.
Services were Jan. 26 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge. Interment was at the Benton Township Cemetery Potterville.
