Howard E. Smiley
Howard E. Smiley, age 89 of Portland, died Wednesday, May 24, 2000. He was born September 16, 1910 in Mason the son of William and Dora (Whipp) Smiley. Howard was raised in Mason and had graduated from Mason High School. He was a retired Manager for the A&P Food Store in Portland, a Life member of the Masonic Lodge in Portland, a 40 year member and past treasurer for the Portland Fire Department and former member of the Portland Chamber of Commerce. Preceding him in death were his wife, Lorene (Hyatt); sisters and brothers, Erma, Eva, Theodore, Everett, Ellis and Elmer Smiley.
Surviving are son, Gary (Helen) Smiley of Ionia; stepsons, Jerold (Jaynie) Lane of Naperville, IL and Jon (Mary) Lane of Raymond, CO; 3 grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren; brother, Harry Smiley of Holt; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held May 27th at the Fowler Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Arrangements were made by the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Portland Fire Department or the Masonic Lodge in memory of Howard E. Smiley.
Daniel Smith
Daniel M. Smith, 46, of Charlotte died Dec. 22, 1999 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility, where he had been a resident for the past 15 years as a result of an accident.
Mr. Smith was born May 30, 1953 in Mt. Clemons, the son of James and Pat (North) Smith.
He is survived by his father and one brother, Timothy Smith of Allegan.
He was preceded in death by his mother and wife, Kathy (Gullet).
No services are planned at this time.
Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home, Inc. of Charlotte.
Don Smith
Don Smith, 82, of East Lansing, formerly of Charlotte, Baldwin, and McAllen, Texas, died March 26, 2000 in East Lansing.
Mr. Smith began as a teacher and retired as Assistant to the Superintendent of Charlotte Public Schools in 1974.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, June (Day); one daughter, Shelia Airola of Fife Lake; one son, Rockne “Rocky” (Coleen) of Gilbraltar, five grandchildren, Aaron (Michelle) of Holt, Kirk (Karen) of Virginia, Lynn (Jeff) Eaton of California, Jean (John) Davis of Lansing and Stephen (Cathi) Airola of Lansing; nine great-grandchildren; and one brother, Doug (Cheri Rae) of Charlotte.
Cremation has taken place.
Memorial services were April 6 at Burcham Hills Retirement Center, East Lansing. Arrangements were made by the Gorsline-Runciman East Chapel, East Lansing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Edwinna J. Smith
Edwinna J. Smith, 93, of Baldwin, formerly of Potterville and Charlotte, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, 2000 at a Baldwin nursing home.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 17, 1907 in Clinton County, the daughter of Smith and Winifred (Wilson) Aldrich. She was a past matron and life member of Dimondale OES #363.
She is survived by one daughter, Juanita (Charlie) Turner of Baldwin; four sons, James of Potterville, Larry of Anchorage, Alaska, and, Robert and Charles, both of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis in 1981.
Services were Nov. 3 at the Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Rev. Rae Franke officiating. Interment was in the Barryville Cemetery.
Harold E. Smith
Harold E. Smith, 71, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Battle Creek, died May 11, 2000. Born June 9, 1928 in St. Joe, Arkansas to Ola and Truman Smith, he retired from the military in March, 1968 after 21 years of service in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force.
He was a real estate salesman/broker and appraiser in the Battle Creek area for 24 years before retiring to Eaton Rapids in 1992.
He is survived by his mother, Ola, and a sister Jeannene Cox, both of Hurst, Texas; two children, a son, Douglas (Julie) Smith of Eaton Rapids; and a daughter, Melanie (Hal) Means, and one grandson, Reilly, of Marshall. The family would like to thank Kay Springer and her family for their kindness and friendship, and Ingham Hospice and their staff for their compassionate care and support.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 15, 2000 at 1 p.m. at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, 105 Capital Ave., NE, Battle Creek, Mich., 49017, with Hospice Chaplain David A. Selleck officiating. Interment and military honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday. Please call (616) 962-5527 for times. Howard Raymond Smith
Howard Raymond Smith, age 79 of Aurelius Township, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000 at his residence following a long illness. He was born March 10, 1921 on the family farm in Aurelius Township, the son of Alva M. and Beulah Mae (Klink) Smith. Howard served in the Navy in communications on the U.S.S. Astoria during World War II. He was a retired Farmer and Auctioneer in the Aurelius and Mason area. A former 4-H Leader and member of the Ingham County Farm Bureau and Michigan Centennial Farm Association. He is a life member of the Lester Sitts VFW Post #5065 of Sheridan and a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church in rural Eaton Rapids.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ruth; 5 children, Ronald (Connie) Smith of Mason, Dr. Patricia Anders (Terry Neujahr) of Tucson, AZ, Sue Ellen (Mark) Betcher of Mason, Lawrence Howard (Annie) Smith of Eaton Rapids and Margaret Ruth Anderson of Mason; 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 5th at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Marty DeBow of the Robbins United Methodist Church officiating. Burial followed at the Fowler Cemetery in rural Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were grandchildren, Lawrence Howard Smith, Paul Anders-Stout, Timothy Scott Strickland, Dustin Ronald Smith, Joseph Douglas Betcher, Alva Marie Smith, Lawrence Reese Smith and Sarah Ruth Anderson. Full military honors were provided by the Lester Sitts VFW Post #5065 of Sheridan. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either Heartland Hospice, 700 W. Retha B. Smith
Retha B. Mogg Smith, 85, of Charlotte died Dec. 9, 2000.
Mrs. Smith was born March 26, 1915 in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Clair and Lottie (Wise) Brown. She worked with her husband, Cecil, for many years in the Charlotte Disposal business. She will also be remembered for her positions as a clerk with both Wildern’s Drug Store and Richey’s in downtown Charlotte.
She is survived by two sons, Jerry (Joy) Mogg of Charlotte and Gene (Mildred) Mogg of Grand Rapids; one brother, A.C. Brown; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Cecil Mogg.
Memorial services were Dec. 13 at the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Vincent Myers officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Robert Michael “Bobby” Smith
Robert Michael “Bobby” Smith, age 16 of Eaton Rapids, passed from this life on Wednesday, October 11, 2000. Bobby was born on February 14, 1984 in Lansing, the son of Robert C. and Linda M. (Thurston) Smith. He attended the Eaton Rapids High School, liked to play computer and listen to music and play video games with his brother, Adam and cousin, Steve. He enjoyed the out-of-doors, with campfires, working around the home and hunting with his dad. Bobby was a very kind sensitive and shy young man, and to his brother, Adam, wasn’t just a brother, he was a friend. His family will always love and miss him, and they know he is with God now.
Surviving are his parents, Bob and Linda; brother, Adam; half-sister, Heidi Smith; nephews, Johnny Rendon and Austin Potter; niece, Deserae Potter; grandparents, Roger and Verna Thurston and Mary Smith; great-grandparents, Lloyd and Doris Nichols; aunts and uncles, Marie and Dave Denman, Lee and Karen Thurston, Lynn and Lori Thurston, Bob and Sandy Thurston, and Jack Smith; cousins, Steve, Angela and Randall Denman, Matt Hunter, Tara, Eric, Craig, Brian, Kari, Josh and Ronni Thurston, Sara Adams and Sam Smith.
Memorial services for Bobby were held at the family home on Friday, October 13th at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Evans of the First United Methodist Church officiating. A memorial designation has not been made at this time, but for those desiring, contributions may be made directly to the family in memory of Robert Michael Smith and can be mailed directly to the family or to Skinner Funeral Home at 315 S. Madeline M. Snow
Madeline M. Snow, age 93, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2000 at Ingham Medical Hospital. She was born September 28, 1907 in Rouselaire, Belgium, and named Madelena Margreta. She was one of eight children born to Camial and Leona (VanCoille) Van Steeland. When still a small child, she immigrated to America with her family arriving at New York Ellis Island on the ship “Postsdam” the end of March 1912. Had they embarked later they would have been aboard the “Titanic.” Two years after leaving Europe, their former home land Belgium was invaded by the Germans in World War I. Once in the United States, the family settled first in Ohio, then at a farm on Curtis Road in the Mason, Aurelius area. Growing up Madeline helped work the farm without electricity or plumbing and walked the miles of then dirt roads to attend Pink School which once stood at College and Columbia Roads. The school is now long gone and the roads paved with asphalt. She then moved to Eaton Rapids to live with a married sister so she could attend high school. She worked as a dishwasher at the old Stimson Hospital and graduated with the class of 1927. It was in high school that she met and later married her husband, Clair Snow, on November 16, 1929. They purchased a house at 732 Michigan Street that year and Madeline lived there for over 60 years. She worked at the Eaton Rapids Public Schools as a Kindergarten teachers aid, then as a nurses aid at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital, retiring in 1975. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids. Her husband Clair preceded her in death July 3rd, 1952, a result of lingering injuries suffered in an auto accident in 1946.
Surviving are 4 children, Robert (Lois) Snow of Springport, Richard (Marlene) Snow of Owosso, JoAnne Snow of Ionia and Annette Snow of Lansing; 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 31 at 1 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans officiating. Interment will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility.
Charles Snyder
Charles Snyder, 76, of Bellevue died March 30, 2000 at the Battle Creek Health System.
Mr. Snyder was born July 3, 1923 in Battle Creek, the son of Lee and Florence (Shaffer) Wilson. He attended school in Springfield and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had been a carpenter/millwright and construction superintendent until 1978 when he hired into General Motors as a millwright. He retired in 1988 while working at Oldsmobile-Fisher Body in Lansing. He married Helen Krassow June 20, 1964 in Paris, Ill., who also died April 6 in Durand.
He is survived by one daughter, Diane Smith of Cape Coral, Fla.; three sons, Dennis of Holly, Rodney of DeWitt, and Jonathan of Barrington, N.J.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Norma Drake of Wilcox, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Chuckie Snyder in 1949 and Kevin Lee Snyder in 1993; one brother, Earl Snyder in 1927; and his parents, Lee in 1967 and Florence in 1995.
Joint services for he and Helen were April 15 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was in the Wilcox Cemetery, Maple Grove Township, Barry County.
Helen Snyder
Helen Snyder, 79, of Bellevue died April 6, 2000 in Durand.
Mrs. Snyder was born Aug. 7, 1920 in Rudolph, Ohio, the daughter of John and Ellen (Bigelow) Krassow. She attended school in Bowling Green, Ohio, and worked for Toledo Dry Cleaners. For over 40 years, she was a homemaker and “caretaker”, enjoying tending to her animals, which included dogs, cats, cows, chickens, geese, turkeys and pigs. She married Charles Snyder June 20, 1964 in Paris, Ill., who also died April 6 in Durand.
She is survived by one stepdaughter, Diane Smith of Cape Coral, Fla.; three stepsons, Dennis of Holly, Rodney of DeWitt, and Jonathan of Barrington, N.J.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Jessie Quinby of Bowling Green, Ohio; and three brothers, Calvin Krassow, Virgil Krassow, Merle Krassow.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob Yarger and Carroll Krassow.
Joint services for she and Charles were April 15 at the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Wilcox Cemetery, Maple Grove Township, Barry County.
Dorothy A. Soderberg
Dorothy Ann Soderberg, 93, of Charlotte, died Oct. 5, 2000.
Mrs. Soderberg was born June 16, 1907 in Norway Lake, Minn.
Surviving are sons, Richard (Sue) of Traverse City, Randolph (Kathleen) of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Tracy (Jim) Holmes, Kimberly Tinkey of Chicago, Ill., and Zachary (Nicole) Soderberg of Napanee, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Olivia and Jack Holmes, and Carter and Maxwell Soderberg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert in Dec. 1974.
Cremation has taken place, and a time of remembrance for Dorothy will be hosted by her immediate family Sunday, Oct. 22, from noon to 5 p.m. at 2400 W. Kinsel Hwy., Charlotte.
