Kathryn I. Craun

Kathryn I. Craun, age 84 of Eaton Rapids, died April 7, 2000. She was born June 22, 1915 in Jackson, Michigan, the daughter of Arthur and Josephine (Jewell) Davison and she grew up on the family farm in Hamlin Township. On December 18, 1942, she married Martin Craun and together operated a dairy farm west of town. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was a secretary for A.M. Smith-Hansen Packing Co., the First Methodist Church, Robinson and Zentmyer Attorneys, and Nolan and Dallas Attorneys, retiring in 1980. A member of the Eaton Rapids Garden Club, she enjoyed her flowers, books and antiques.

Surviving are sons, David of Eaton Rapids and Dennis of Spring Lake; brothers, Robert Davison of Eaton Rapids and Carl Davison of Jackson; former daughter-in-law, Brenda Hughes of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Brianna Veazie of Sanford, ME and James (Rebecca) Hathaway of Columbus, OH; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were infant son, John; sister, Genevieve Southwick and brother, Donald Davison.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 10th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with internment in the Rosehill Cemetery. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Rapids Public Library.

Ila Cross

Ila Cross, 81, of Potterville, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000.

Mrs. Cross was born April 30, 1919 in Montcalm Co., the daughter of William and Dora (Black) Barkhuff. She was a member of the Potterville United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Group and the Potterville Lioness Club. She enjoyed traveling, many fishing trips, her garden and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Howard; two sons, Richard (Nancy) of Potterville and Ronald (Connie) of Modesto, Calif.; five grandchildren, Mike Cross, Tina (Cross) Walker, Kimberly (Cross) Willis, Jennifer (Cross) Langpaap and Dena Cross; six great-grandchildren; and brother, Dale Barkhuff of Carson City.

Funeral services were held July 29 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Earl Cross officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing.

Jesse J. Cummings

Jesse J. Cummings, 86, of Bellevue, died Nov. 11, 2000, at Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Cummings was born March 13, 1914 in Rochester, Ind., to Daniel and Lulu (Lining) Cummings. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School. He operated the Curly Q Drive IN in Bellevue for 25 years, and also operated a floral shop in Bellevue. He also served as Bellevue’s first uniformed police officer for many years. He married Inez Burkimer Feb. 7, 1962; she survives. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bellevue, and the TTCM Trailer Club. He and his wife traveled in the south during winter for the past 33 years. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer, having played in several Michigan Pro-Am events.

He was preceded in death by two sister, Dorothy Squires and Fernetta Griffin; and two brothers, Forest and George Cummings.

Services were Nov. 14 at the Bellevue Fist United Methodist Church, with Rev. Darwin Kuhl officiating. Arrangements by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bellevue First Responder, or to the charity of one’s choice.

E. Mae Curry

E. Mae Curry, age 91 of Eaton Rapids and formerly of Bellevue, passed away Thursday, April 20th. Mae was born March 21, 1909 in Amasa, Michigan. The daughter of Arvid S. and Mary L. (Wherly) Peterson, Mae was raised in Amasa before attending Ferris State College, where she earned her degree in elementary education. She later attended Western Michigan University. Mae was preceded in death by her husband Albert Curry, whom she married on June 23, 1933. She was an elementary school teacher in the Bellevue and Battle Creek Lakeview School systems for 18 years.

She is survived by sons Hugh (Sharon) Curry of Columbia, Missouri and Arvid (Sally) Curry of Greenville; a daughter, Mary (Arnie) Thuma of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren, Linda (Craig) Willis, Mark (Elizabeth) Curry, David (Jill) Curry, Mike Curry, Mindy Curry, Tracy (Greg) Gletek, and Jeff Thuma; 12 great-grandchildren; and her sister Margie Beiszczat of Iron River.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 25th, 11a.m. at the Shaw Funeral Home, 1838 Capital Ave., S.W., Battle Creek, MI with Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue First United Methodist Church.

Ronald L. Curtis

Ronald Lynn Curtis, 34, of Bellevue, died unexpectedly early in the morning of Sept. 10, 2000.

Mr. Curtis was born Oct. 27, 1965, the son of Alwin Curtis and Bonita (Downer) Curtis. He grew up in the Bellevue area, attended school in Bellevue, and received his high school diploma in 1983. He left Michigan in ’83 and moved to Florida where he was a construction worker. He had also been employed at Bob Greene’s gas station, Bellevue, working as an attendant and as a mechanic. He was employed at Jon Pfiester’s Farm (Doc’s Farm), both as a farm hand and mechanic. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in April 1989, graduating from boot camp at Camp Pendleton, Calif., in July ’89. He fought in Desert Storm and Desert Sheild from 1990-1991, and was stationed in Hawaii from ’91 to December ’94. Mr. Curtis received four expert rifleman medals, among many medals of commendation, while serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was currently a corporal in the Marine Corps Ready Reserve. Mr. Curtis met his wife, Suzzette (Frentress) in January ’95. Following a three-year courtship, they married Oct. 30, 1998. Mr. Curtis loved community projects, and helping out with painting projects at the Bellevue Elementary School. He had a passion for hunting, and it didn’t matter what was being hunted. He had hunted wild boar while in Hawaii, and elk, moose and bear in the western U.S. He loved to bowhunt, and did so every season, teaching his wife at the same time. He was also responsible, while growing up, for taking care of duties on the family farm. He loved to help other people, and cared for the outdoors, working together on the farm where they lived. He had many gifts and talents that he shared with many of those around him. He will be sorely missed, but all know in their hearts that God takes his own when He decides to.

He is survived by his wife, Suzette of Olivet; his father Alwin Curtis and his mother Gin Curtis, both of Bellevue; two brothers, Gary of N.Y. and David (Vicky) of Grand Rapids; his grandparents, Clarence and June VanBuskirk of Gladwin; brothers-in-law, Jason, Darren, David and Joseph Frentress, all of Olivet; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dave and Brenda Frentress; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonita Curtis in 1968.

Services were Sept. 14 at the Bellevue Christian Center with Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue, with military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Carolyn Daly

Carolyn Daly, 64, of Charlotte, died Oct. 7, 2000 in Moore’s Adult Foster Care Home, Charlotte.

She was born May 16, 1936 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Clarence and Erma (Hopkins) White.

Surviving are sons, Joseph Jr. of New York City, N.Y., David of Charlotte, Stephen of Bellevue and Paul of Marshall; a daughter, Elizabeth of Bellevue; and ten grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 11 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Rev. Fr. Dennis Spitzley officiating.

Lillian V. Darnell

Lillian V. Darnell, age 77 of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000 in Howell. Lillian was born June 11, 1922 in Lansing, the daughter of Oscar and Viola (Hoover) Bunker. She was a Special Education bus driver for Eaton Rapids Public Schools. Preceding her in death were her husband, Clarence F. in 1970, her sister, Estina Disbrow, and her stepmother, Clorah Bunker on April 10, 2000.

Lillian is survived by 3 daughters, Lois (David) Clark of Unica, Ila (Larry) Collins of St. Louis, Karen Roebuck of Adrian; 5 sons, Clarence (Carolyn) Darnell, Jr. of Fowlerville, Terry (Sue) Darnell of Elsie, Ray (Connie) Darnell and Ron (Carla) Darnell both of Lansing, Kevin Darnell of Eaton Rapids; 27 grandchildren; 3 brothers, Ruhl (Elaine) Bunker of Dansville, Daniel (Betty) Bunker of Williamston, Ivan Lee Bunker of Mason; 3 sisters, Florence (Earl) Lauck of Eaton Rapids, Darla (Wayne) Tody of Traverse City, Carol (George) Hertzfeld of Jackson and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 14, 2000 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Aikin, Pastor, of the Aurelius Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery, Aurelius.

Wanda J. Davis

Wanda Jane McClure Davis, 78, died Nov. 7, 2000, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Davis was born April 12, 1922, the daughter of Jay and Opal Belle (Wurtz) Guyer. She was a waitress at the old Stockyard Restaurant, the old Depot Restaurant and a sales person for Stanley Products and Avon. She was generous in helping friends. She enjoyed fishing and country music and played the piano by ear.

She is survived by four daughters, Bonnie (LeRoy) Sedore and Diane (Time) Maynard, both of Charlotte; one son, Richard (Suzy) of Charlotte; Carole Franciscotty of Grand Ledge; Stephanie (Dennis) Baker of Eaton Rapids; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley (Les) Bremmer of Charlotte; two brothers, Richard (Betty) Guyer of Spencer, Ohio, and Robert Guyer of Panama City, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, Carl Davis; and five brothers, Jack Guyer, Russell Guyer, Clare Guyer, Dale Guyer and Stanley Guyer.

Graveside services were Nov. 9 at the Bosworth Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Flossie E. DeBar

Flossie E. DeBar, 86, of Lansing died Sept. 17, 2000.

Mrs. DeBar was born Nov. 24, 1913 in Clare, the daughter of George and Dora (Miller) Highlen. Music was a large part of Mrs. DeBar’s life, and she also enjoyed bowling and round and square dancing. She sewed, crocheted, did beautiful embroidery work and taught classes in tatting. Some of her employment years were spent upholstering at the Charlotte Chair Company and later, at her home on Vermontville Highway. Moving to Lansing from Clare as a teenager, she lived most of her younger years in the Lansing and Charlotte areas until she and her husband, Kenneth, became the owners and operators of a resort at Fife Lake and were in business with their son, Raymond. They enjoyed the north country, living on a beautiful lake, and had some memorable times during their years there. She later resided in Tucson, Ariz. For 23 years, where she played piano and organ in her own, as well as other, band, all of which entertained on a regular basis in and around the Tucson area. In 1996, due to ill health, she returned to the Lansing area to be near her family.

She is survived by one daughter, Ruth (Albert) Mix of Grand Ledge; two sons, Rex (Valerie) of Lansing and Raymond (Mary) of Grand Ledge; one granddaughter; seven grandsons; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Fern Jenkins of Lansing and Gladys Curtis of Charlotte; one brother, George (LaVetta) Highlen of Grand Ledge; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Melvin Michaud.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Kenneth DeBar in 1965 and Ernest Myers in 1995.

Services were Sept. 21 at Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing, with Rev. Dr. Leiscester Longden and Rev. George Fleming officiating. Interment was in the Delta Center Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice.

Vivian Denniston

Vivian “Peggy” M. Denniston, 78, of Bellevue died April 3, 2000 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.

Mrs. Denniston was born Feb. 6, 1922 in Bellevue, the daughter of Maurice and Jannette (Cook) VanScoter. She was a 1939 graduate of Bellevue High School and earned a certificate in stenography from Kellogg Community College in 1966. She was a home day care provider and had previously worked at Tekonsha Engineering. She was a member of the Fredonia Grange, the Order of Eastern Star of Marshall and a long time member of the Marshall 4-H.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Mohammadianpour of Bellevue and Vanessa Denniston of El Cajon, Calif.; two sons, Larry of Apple Valley, Calif. and Alan of Midland, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Frances VanScoter at age 3.

Services were April 7 at the Bellevue First Baptist Church with Pastor Don Francis officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Arrangements were made by the Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.

Doris May DePeel

Doris May DePeel, age 76 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at a Lansing Hospital. She was born August 22, 1923 in Ingham County, the daughter of Bert and Bernice (Root) Parsons. Doris retired after 40 years of service with Acme Industries, formerly Rheem’s, in Jackson. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids and was preceded in death by her husband Wayne in 1991.

Surviving are her son, Bill (Gwen) DePeel of Eaton Rapids; grandsons, Kevin and William DePeel both of Eaton Rapids; brother, Gordon Parsons of Irons, MI; sisters-in-law, Mona Parsons of Eaton Rapids and Irene Parsons of Lansing; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 29th from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Pastor Mike Fountain of the Island City Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Jackson, MI.
